Chapter Ten
"So, what's with the hair?" she looked at me then to her pitch black hair that was hanging at the side of her head.
"What's wrong with my hair?"
"I didn't say anything was wrong with it, it just... looks as if no one combed it in a while." And I was being honest. Her hair did look tangled. Like really, really tangled.
"I comb it. Just not as often as most people. I have a brush but I don't really use it. I hate combing my hair." she huffed at her statement while looking at the dresser. I walked towards it and opened the drawer to see a brush along with other stuff that she needed. Like a toothbrush and toothpaste with napkins and dental floss and stuff like that. I picked up the brush and made my way back to her. Her looked at me with curiosity until they shifted to the brush in my hand. I almost laughed as I saw a hint of fear in her eyes. "No." she simply said catching on to what I was about to do.
"Come on. You gotta comb it sometime. Why not let it be now?"
"I refuse to let that disgusting thing touch my hair." she folded her arms as she turned her face away from me. I couldn't ignore how cute she looked doing that.
"Agnes, you have to." I tried but she wasn't buying it.
"Why do I have to?"
"Because... because if you don't, um, your hair will... fall out! It will die and fall out and you will be bald." Her eyes were wide with terror at my untrue statement. But it wasn't really that much of a lie. You do need to comb your hair at times so I was sort of making the truth out of a lie. I didn't fail to realise that we actually became much closer after the display that happened. I didn't mention it and neither did she.
"O-ok."
"Good. Now turn around." She hesitantly turned her back to me as she motioned herself to stare at the wall next to her bed. I walked up to her and slowly but cautiously took her hair in my hands. She tensed but didn't say anything. I slowly lowered the brush to her hair and brushed it. It took me about 15 minutes to finish brushing the tangled hair but when I finally did I French braided it. I remembered doing that often to my sisters hair because she too had a hair problem. When she was 16, she gave up on it and chopped all off. I guess I would've done the same thing but my mother never forgave her for it. My sister had the kind of thick hair most women would crave for. But I guess she didn't have that kind of craving. I finally finished putting a French braid in her hair. I don't know how but it suited her. I tapped her head and admired my work. She slowly turned her head and looked at me weirdly.
"Please don't tell me you ripped out a piece of my hair." I just smiled slyly and watched as she started to glare at me. "Please tell me you didn't."
"I did not rip out of a piece of your hair." she ran her hands over her hair and pulled the braid over her shoulder. She looked at it and smiled. Don't worry. It wasn't the kind of smile you're thinking of. You know, the Agnes smile, the one where you don't expect it but once it's there it's so small you barely notice it. No. This one actually had me suspicious. It was a big smile. A huge smile! With teeth and everything! I looked around then back at her. The same smile. ''What?"
"I want to show you something." She said getting up and reaching under her bed. Before she got what she wanted she looked back at me with a blank stare. "Before I show you I want you to know that no one has seen these. No one." I slowly not nodded not liking the idea. I mean come on. What was I supposed to think. It could've been a dead body for all I know. But it wasn't. It was a narrow brown box. She struggled to lift it and put it on the bed, jumping over it to open it. I just watched as she pulled up a handle and opened the box. I remember being left stunned at what I saw. Although it was papers, it was on the papers that caught my attention. They were all paintings. And when I tell they were beautiful, I mean they were gorgeous. They left me stunned. There was a painting of a girl by a lake, pointing to some sort of fish. Then there was a painting of a rainbow with clouds at the bottom and unicorns jumping over invisible stuff. Then there was another picture of a mermaid. What made me amused was the fact that the mermaid had wings. I remembered her asking me why mermaids couldn't fly. The thing about them was how realistic they looked. Especially the one with the mermaids. "They told me to write down my feelings but I guess I show my feelings different from others." I picked them up one by one and admired them. To be honest, I didn't know Agnes could draw. Much less paint. "I ran out of paint a long time ago so I just look at them. I don't think I still have it in me to paint." I laughed a bit while still looking at each and every one of the paintings. I eventually reached the last one and then noticed that Agnes had gone quiet. I looked up at her to see her staring at me strangely. As if deep in concentration.
"Wha-" Before I got to finish my sentence I was tackled to the ground landing on my back. Two small hands were placed around my throat as the air that was passing through my lungs was cut off. Agnes was strangling me as she choked the living daylight out of me. I wrapped my hands around hers and tried to loosen the hold she had on me but it did nothing. All that was happening, I found a weird reason to be more confused than panicked. I could feel my lungs start to burn and my heart start to beat slow. I took a good look at Agnes but what I saw in her eyes was pure hatred. I reached down to the pocket of my coat and pressed the red button I forgot to mention. Almost immediately, the guys dressed in blue came in and pulled Agnes off of me. I immediately shot up and held my throat while coughing. I finally got to breathe but there was still something in my throat choking me. I notice Agnes struggling through the men's hold, trying to get to me. I watched as they took out a syringe and injected it into her arm as her thrashing stopped and she weakened. She just stared at me before closing her eyes and stop moving. Eventually, my throat was feeling better but I couldn't get over the fact that Agnes tried to kill me. I could've sworn we were getting along. I could've sworn she was close to trusting me. But I guessed I was wrong. I got up and went out the door while making an attempt to massage my neck. It was hurting a lot. I walked down the hallways trying to get as far away from that room as possible. I heard my name being called but I made no move to stop walking or look back. Have you ever had one of those feelings where you just don't feel like talking to anyone? I had that feeling. I guess the person really wanted to talk to me since they held me by my arm and turned me around. It was Charles.
"Hey." I looked everywhere else but at him. I just wanted to leave and never come back. I survived an Agnes tornado. I refused to wait around and see if I could survive another. "Look, they told me what happened."
"Good. I have a good excuse to leave." I said trying to walk around him but he stopped me.
"I'm sorry. I didn't expect her to do something like this."
"Are you serious? She killed one of the cooks and stabbed another and you could say you didn't expect her to do this?"
"I meant I didn't expect her to do this to you. I thought she trusted you or something." I thought so as much as he did.
"Yeah, well, she didn't apparently." He sighed and stared at me with sadness in his eyes. I felt for him. Having to go through this everyday with patients. I'm already close to my death.
"Don't worry about it. She's getting punished." I just stared at him in awe with how calm he was to it. I scoffed at him in disbelief and continued my way out of the institution.
