Chapter 9: Before I Pass Out Again

I slowly woke up in an all white room. Pain shot through every inch of my body, including when I opened my eyes. I could see blurred faces and by the looks of it, flowers. I heard a man shout, "She's awake!" and then many footsteps afterwards. I blinked and then I could see various people from school and my Dad's work.
"What day is it?" I mumbled
"Thursday, darling." My father said gently.
A nurse walked in and said, "Please, I have told you all once before. Only immediate family and by the patient's request are allowed in here." She shoved everyone out except for my dad.
Dad pulled something out of his pocket. "Remember that surprise I had for you?" He asked. "Well here it is."
He opened his hands to reveal a locket. It was gold, with a sun, flower, cloud, and butterfly engraved on the front. I recognized the sun from the key and necklace in my dream. Then I exclaimed.
"Oh Dad it's beautiful!"
"Look inside." He said
I opened it to find our first family photo inside.
"It was your mother's" he said softly.
I hugged him, then he said,
"I think there's someone who wants to talk to you."
I put the locket on, then watched Dad walk out the door, confused.
A voice startled me "So you like the locket huh Sleeping Beauty." It was the voice of an angel.
I looked at him, started crying, then passed out again.
But it wasn't the boy that caused it.
No. Demetri, the boy that now sat by my bedside, probably feeling awful for my reaction, didn't do anything.
It was what I saw in his eyes that made me cry.
I saw my mother.
The day she died.
I was nine.
Five years ago.
She stood in front of me, holding my shoulders.
"Alice, my beautiful daughter," she began. "Chuck– I mean Daddy will always take care of you. When I'm gone, you will only have him left."
"Mom, what are you talking about?" I asked.
"It doesn't matter darling." She replied. "I just want you to know that I love you. And I will always—"
Before I could blink, she landed on the ground of our old living room floor.
"Mom!" I screamed.
But she never answered.
When the paramedics arrived, they told us some frighting news.
Where my mom's heart should be.
There was nothing.
Her heart had disappeared.
