Chapter 11: The Rejected One

Almost as if it hadn't happened, the vision left my mind. I remembered witnessing it, I just had no idea what had happened.
Just like before, when I had the flashback of my mom, only one second had pasted.
Why did my life have to be so confusing?
It was then that I realized that I was still alone with Peter.
"Peter," I whispered. "I think that you know that things are going to be different since Demetri is back now."
"Yeah, you're going to have to tell him that you like me and not him." he replied.
I looked down and shook my head. "No." I said softly. "I think I'm going to stick with him for a while."
Shock covered his face. "You barely know him though!"
"I realize that, and I'm sorry. But he's different, in a way that I can't explain. I hope you understand."
He shook with anger. "I'll understand nothing!" He grabbed his jacket and walked to the door, only taking a moment to turn to me and say, "You're crazy."
And with that, he walked out.

~Peter~

I stormed out of that stupid hospital. Demetri Shadow, my forever enemy, will pay for this.
I stopped by a wishing well I'd come across, when I noticed that I was suddenly in the forest behind Demetri Shadow's house.
Wait, how did I get here?
I stepped further into the woods, attempting to get as far away from that house as possible.
That's when I found it.
A shack.
It was more of a house, but it was beaten up pretty badly.
Being curious and all, I stepped towards it, intending to go inside.
Then I was inside.
It was gross in there.
A couple of rats scurried across the floor when I'd arrived, scraps of cloth, paper, dust, and food labels covered most of the floor, and there were footprints on some areas. It was like someone was living there.
I noticed a staircase to my right, and walked toward it.
Each stair creaked and groaned under my weight, and I was afraid that one of them would collapse.
Once I reached the top, I found a small mattress pushed into the corner of a fairly large room, and many vials full of strange liquids littered the floor.
Other than that, the room was empty.
Or so I thought.
"Well well well. What do we have here?" A voice called out.
I spun around. A boy about my age stood on the top of the stairs, smiling at me. The fear that had attacked me faded, and I returned the boy's smile.
"Hi." he said. "Sorry if I scared you, I didn't mean to."
"It's fine." I assured him. "I'm Peter, what's your name?"
He pause for a moment. "Jacob." he replied, his sincere smile not faltering.
"Nice to meet you." I said. Then, as politely as possible, I added, "Do you live here?"
"Yeah," he said, scanning the room. "it's not that bad once you get used to it. In fact, it's quite cozy."
"Really?" I asked. "That seems very unlikely."
He shrugged.
"I'm doing work for a close friend. This place is good enough until the deed is done."
"What kind of work are you doing?" I asked.
His eyes seemed to brighten.
"Why don't I show you."
He brushed past me and walked into the room.
He stopped in front of the weird liquids.
"Imagine, a serum that could either enhance an ability, or disable it. Take strength, for instance. If I could make a strong man weak for a little while, imagine the possibilities that you do with that! And if I figure this out, I could do virtually, anything!" He stopped for a moment, his face filled with glee. Then, his expression saddened. "But alas, I haven't got a single person to test these with...unless. Unless you!"
He ran up to me.
"I-I don't know, man." I stammered. "What's in it for me?"
"That, is for you to decide my friend. What is your most craved desire?"
It took me no time to answer.
"Revenge." I stated. "Revenge on Demetri Shadow."
Jacob chuckled.
"I have a feeling that you and my boss will get along very well." He stated. "It seems, that you both desire the same thing."
I blinked in surprise.
"I think it's about time you meet him."
Jacob snapped his fingers, and a pitch-black cloud began arising from the floor.
Then it took the shape of a man.
The shape of a horrid looking man, with dark hair and glowing yellow eyes.
"My name is Rufus." his demonic voice said with a snicker. "We'll get along very well."
He got really close to my face.
So close, that I could see every piece of scum on his teeth, and smell his foul breath.
"You serve me now." he sneered.
And you know what? I was glad.
This guy was going to help me give Demetri the payback he deserves.
