Chapter 10: Sleeping Beauty and the Shadow
~Demetri~
I looked at the almost unrecognizable person laying in the hospital bed in front of me. I had heard the news and completely freaked out. Hearing that someone you love got hit by a speeding car isn't the best thing to hear, especially when you're already sad about not being able to see that person anymore. I'd gotten to the hospital, and for the small couple of seconds that her heart stopped, I started bawling my eyes out. Everything is fine now, unless you look at her injuries.
The car had done its damage. There was a long scratch, that went down the side of her face, following the edge of her hairline. Other than that and a couple bruises, her face was unharmed. She'd broken a couple of ribs, her left leg in three places, and her right wrist. Nothing else was broken, just bruises, everywhere.
Seeing her wake up for the first time after the crash was amazing. Not good amazing. She just looked so perfect, even for someone in her condition. And ever since I got here it's been hard to fight the urge to grab her and hug her and never let her go. That could wait until she was better though.
The problem I had though is when she saw me. I felt like such a monster. She started crying the moment she saw me, then passed out. I'd only been gone for a month, but it felt like forever. I'm guessing she felt the same way.
Peter walked in the room, looking like he wanted to fight. He laughed at me, more like a snicker, then walked over to the chair on the other side of the room.
I would not participate in his childish game. He was constantly trying to make me blow up at him. I'd like to know how that was working out.
"You know, we're going to the dance together." Peter said, interrupting my thoughts.
"Oh are we now." I sarcastically said, "I'm sorry but, I think you're a ego maniac and a loser."
"Ugh, not me and you." He said "Me and Alice." He sounded proud of himself.
"You should really make that clear next time."
"Whatever." He scoffed.
After a few minutes of silence his face suddenly lit up.
"Dude, why do you look like a clown?" I asked
"Oh...I was just thinking...well..."
"Spit it out you creep! I'm not getting any younger!"
"That she would so pick me over you if she had the choice."
"Is that a challenge?"
"Yes it is my young..." He looked me up and down "badly dressed person that I know. Whoever she chooses to go to the dance with her wins."
"Challenge accepted you creepy clown."
"Shut up. I think she's waking up." He leaned over her (a little closer than I liked) and looked at her face.
~Alice~
I woke up to Peter's face right in front of mine. I'd semi-forgotten what he looked like, so I had to stop and remember. Chocolate-brown eyes, freckles, and shaggy brown hair. Yeah.
"Hey." He said gently.
"What day is it now?" I asked, my voice a little raspy.
"Still Thursday, about 1 in the afternoon." Then he added "Does anything hurt?"
"No. I feel somewhat great, actually."
"Doesn't surprise me." Demetri said "They put you on so many medications that you probably can't feel anything."
"Are you hungry?" Peter asked, ignoring Demetri.
"Yes, very." I said, suddenly becoming aware of the pain in my stomach.
"Great! I cooked you a meal."
"Aw! That's so sweet, Peter."
He handed me a brown paper bag. Inside was chicken noodle soup and some crackers.
I quickly gobbled it up, not caring if I looked like a pig.
"Thanks Peter." I said after I was done.
"No prob." He said.
The room went silent for a minute.
I looked at them both.
Peter. He's my best friend, someone who I don't want to lose.
And Demetri. The first guy I've ever actually liked. And now that I think of it, I barely know him. I just feel, drawn to him for some reason. I feel like something big will happen if I make him a part of my life.
But the dance. I've already told Peter I'd go with him. I don't want to hurt his feelings.
Come on Alice! My mind yelled at me. You can turn him down, without hurting his feelings.
Demetri's phone rang.
"It's my mom, I have to take this."
He walked out of the room, lightly closing the door behind him.
I looked into Peter's eyes. And I was no longer in the hospital.
"Zoe!" Some girl I didn't recognize screeched. "What have you done?!"
A brunette, who must have been Zoe, stood horrified, staring at her hands.
"Skyler...I didn't–" Zoe started before Skyler, the previous speaker interrupted her.
"Shut up!" She yelled, tears streaming down her face.
Then she turned, landing on her knees in the process, sobbing over a lifeless body.
She turned to me. "Alice, please. You have to do something."
I was horrified and confused.
"I–I don't know what to do." I replied. A tear rolled down my cheek as I looked around, about ten other teenagers stood around Skyler and the body. They were all looking at me.
A boy with long, brown hair pulled me into a hug.
But not before I saw a familiar face.
Demetri.
