Ruby

Narrator: Legends. Stories scattered through time. Mankind has grown quite fond of recounting the exploits of heroes and villains, forgetting so easily that we are remnants, byproducts, of a forgotten past.

The gems in the image glow green and fade to show simple pictures of a man rising from the earth before being surrounded by creatures, barely held back by warriors.

Narrator: Man, born from dust, was strong, wise, and resourceful, but he was born into an unforgiving world. An inevitable darkness — creatures of destruction — the creatures of Grimm - set their sights on man and all of his creations. These forces clashed, and it seemed the darkness was intent on returning man's brief existence to the void.

Black sets in, then suddenly lessens as a light grows brighter and brighter until a gem rises from it and lowers itself into the hands of man.

Narrator: However, even the smallest spark of hope is enough to ignite change, and in time, man's passion, resourcefulness, and ingenuity led them to the tools that would help even the odds. This power was appropriately named "Dust".

The scene zooms out to show men shooting lightning, raising swords, and aiming rifles at the retreating beasts as a castle appears behind them.

Narrator: Nature's wrath in hand, man lit their way through the darkness, and in the shadow's absence came strength, civilization, and most importantly, life.

The castle zooms out to show a map of Remnant, which houses other buildings until they disappear in flashes of white and the map is lowered to show the scattered moon over a city at night.

Narrator: But even the most brilliant lights eventually flicker and die. And when they are gone... darkness will return.

Roman Torchwick and four of his henchmen head down an alley from the shadows. They stop behind Roman, who reignites his cigar without touching it and grins before walking down the road, frightening nearby citizens as they make their way towards the shop From Dust Till Dawn.

Narrator: So you may prepare your guardians, build your monuments to a so-called "free world", but take heed... there will be no victory in strength.

Roman and his henchmen enter the shop, the camera lowering to a young girl wearing a hooded red cloak in the corner of the shop, reading a weapons magazine.

Ozpin (voice over): But perhaps victory is in the simpler things that you've long forgotten. Things that require a smaller, more honest soul.

Y/N had been quietly stocking shelves in the back of the shop, dressed in a dark cloak that concealed his appearance from the few customers that came in during the late hours. He preferred it this way, the hood providing a comforting barrier from the overwhelming world outside.

He glanced up when the doorbell chimed, signaling new arrivals. Peeking out from the back, he saw several rough-looking men spread out around the shop, their eyes darting to the Dust crystals in the displays. His heart rate quickened, and he pulled his hood lower, trying to remain unnoticed.

The henchmen look around and at the Dust crystals in the display when Roman approaches the elderly shopkeeper.

Roman: (flicking his cigar) Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a Dust shop open this late?

One of the henchman points his gun at the shopkeeper.

Shopkeeper: (raising his hands) P-please! Just take my Lien and leave!

Roman: Shhh, shhh, shhh, shhh, calm down, we're not here for your money. (to the henchmen) Grab the Dust.

A henchman opens a case and removes one of several cylinders, which the group uses to take Dust from the tube containers on the walls.

Henchman 1: (placing another open case on the display to the shopkeeper) Crystals. Burn. Uncut.

The shopkeeper proceeds to fill the case. As another henchman goes for another tube, he hears the muted This Will Be the Day song from the girl's direction, and unsheathes his sword.

Y/N's mind raced. He could see the henchmen opening a case and starting to take the Dust. His first instinct was to teleport away, to escape the situation entirely, but he couldn't just leave the shopkeeper to face these criminals alone.

Y/N watched from his vantage point as the shopkeeper nervously filled the case with Dust crystals. His eyes flicked to the other henchmen who were methodically gathering more Dust from the tubes along the walls. The muted sound of This Will Be the Day caught his attention, coming from the direction of a cloaked figure near the display.

Henchman 2: (pointing his sword at her back) Alright kid, put your hands where I can see 'em. (no response) Hey, I said hands in the air! You got a death wish or something!?

He goes over to her and turns her around, the hood dropping to reveal a surprised Ruby Rose wearing headphones. He motions for her to lower them.

Ruby: (doing so) Yes?

Henchman 2: I said, put your hands in the air, now!

Ruby: Are you... robbing me?

Henchman 2: Yes!

Ruby: Ooohhh...

Y/N knew the situation was escalating. He couldn't stand by any longer. Teleporting silently to a position just behind the henchman, he took advantage of the momentary distraction.

In a flash of blue smoke and a distinctive "Bamf," Y/N appeared behind the henchman and quickly disarmed him, his teleportation abilities giving him the element of surprise. The sword clattered to the ground, drawing the attention of everyone in the shop.

Ruby's eyes widened in surprise and relief as she saw the cloaked figure now standing protectively between her and the henchman.

Ruby: Whoa! Thanks for the assist!

Y/N just looked at her

Roman is waiting for his men to finish the heist when a "Hey!" and "Hyah!" are heard, and the threatening henchman flies past him. Roman calmly motions for another to handle Ruby.

Y/N watched from the shop as chaos erupted outside. Henchman 1 barked an order, and Ruby, now outside, had crashed through the window with one of the henchmen. She got up and, with a confident smile, unfolded Crescent Rose into its scythe form. Roman Torchwick, watching from inside, scowled at the display.

Roman: Okayyy... Get her!

The remaining henchmen streamed out of the shop and charged at Ruby. She spun on top of her scythe, delivering a powerful kick to the first attacker's face. Y/N saw her fluid movements, firing Crescent Rose to strike another henchman with the weapon's butt, sending him flying.

Seeing the henchmen distracted, Y/N teleported outside with a "Bamf," appearing next to Ruby just as she fired again and brought the scythe down on another attacker. He teleported behind a henchman aiming a gun at Ruby, disarming him with a swift kick and teleporting again to avoid incoming fire.

Ruby: Thanks for the backup!

Y/N nodded and continued to use his teleportation to keep the henchmen off balance. One henchman took aim at Ruby, but Y/N appeared behind him, grabbing his arm and teleporting him a few feet into the air before letting go, causing the henchman to fall hard onto the ground.

Ruby, using Crescent Rose's speed, dodged another henchman's gunfire and knocked him into the air. She followed him upward, delivering a series of rapid blows that sent him crashing down at Roman's feet. Roman's expression turned from scowl to shock as he realized his men were being systematically taken down.

Roman: You were worth every cent. Truly, you were. (to Ruby and Y/N dropping his cigar and crushing it with his cane as approaching police sirens are heard) Well, Red, and Hood, I think we can all say it's been an eventful evening, and as much as I'd love to stick around...

He raises his cane and opens the bottom to reveal a rifle with a cross grid.

Roman: ...I'm afraid this is where we part ways.

Roman unleashes a red blast at Ruby, and Y/N. Y/N grabbed her and teleported a couple feet away from the blast. When they land and looks up, Roman isn't there, and is climbing up a ladder on a nearby building.

Ruby looked to the onlooking shopkeeper.

Ruby: You okay if we go after him?

The shopkeeper gives a short "Uh huh", and Y/N hesitated, his eyes flicking between Ruby and the shopkeeper.

Y/N: (with a bit of a German accent) I-I was only protecting you and the store. What Roman does from here... it isn't my business.

Ruby stepped closer, trying to make eye contact.

Ruby: I get it, but you saw what he did. If we don't stop him, he'll just hurt more people. We could really use your help. Plus, your teleportation power is awesome!

Y/N shifted uncomfortably, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his cloak.

Y/N: (nervously) I... I don't like fighting. It's too much. Too... loud. And confusing.

Ruby placed a reassuring hand on his arm.

Ruby: I understand. But you've already shown how brave you are. You saved me back there. Just imagine how many more people you can help if we stop him together.

Y/N looked at Ruby, seeing the determination and sincerity in her eyes. He took a deep breath, nodding slightly.

Y/N: O-okay. But... only because it's the right thing to do.

Ruby smiled brightly.

Ruby: That's the spirit! Let's go get him!

Roman makes it to the roof, with Ruby and Y/N teleporting and landing right behind him.

Ruby: Hey!

Roman: Persistent...

Ruby readies to fight him, but a getaway Bullhead rises up and opens the hatch to allow Roman inside.

Roman: End of the line, Red.

He started turning around and holding up a red Dust gem. He throws it out at her feet and fires at her, resulting in a large explosion.

Roman: Whoa-ho-ho-ho! (stops laughing when he sees something on the roof) Huh?

A woman in a purple cape is now in front of Y/N and Ruby, casting a circle of protection over them with her wand. As the two look on, Glynda Goodwitch waves her weapon and summons several streaks of purple at the craft. Roman is thrown around in the back until he goes to the cockpit, where a woman in red, her face unseen, is struggling with the controls.

Roman: We got a Huntress!

The woman gets up and heads toward the back as Roman takes the controls.

Glynda glows purple for a moment and aims another blast above the craft, resulting in a dark storm-cloud right over the jet.

Roman: The hell...?

With a flick of her wand, large jagged hail starts falling that pummels the jet and even breaks through the window, narrowly missing Roman's head.

The woman reaches the back and her arms and chest light up like fire, aiming a burst of energy at Glynda. The Huntress blocks it, but the flame splatters behind her and glows hot with the enemy's raised hand. Glynda back-flips out of the explosion, which destroys part of the roof, and magically gathers the shards to create a large arrow, which she throws at the craft. The fiery woman shatters the arrow with several blasts, but it reforms just in time to hit the side of the jet due to Roman's quick aerial lean. The wreckage separates and reshapes into more arrows that encircle the jet, but the woman summons several glowing rings around herself that expand and destroy the shards.

Ruby, finally acting, reverts her scythe into its rifle form to fire at the woman, who blocks each shot and creates several blazing circles around her two opponents. Y/N grabbed Ruby and Glynda and teleported them out of the explosion's radius; looking up to see the hatch close and the craft fly away.

Ruby: (looking at Glynda) You're a Huntress! Can I have your autograph?!

———

Ruby's amazed face turning to one of shame as Glynda, with a tablet computer, paces around the table Ruby is seated at, right underneath a bright light in the otherwise dark room. Y/N stands nearby, cloaked and hooded, shifting nervously from foot to foot.

Glynda: I hope that you realize that your actions tonight will not be taken lightly, young lady. You put yourself and others in great danger.

Ruby: They started it!

Glynda: If it were up to me, you'd be sent home... With a pat on the back... (she notices Ruby's smile) ...And a slap on the wrist.

Glynda demonstrates with her riding crop, which Ruby barely avoids as she gives out an "Eeek!" Y/N flinches at the sudden movement but remains silent.

Glynda: But... there is someone here who would like to meet you both.

She moves out of the way so a surprised Ruby can see a man in green come through the doorway, holding a mug and a plate of cookies.

Ozpin: Ruby Rose... (leans in to look at her face) You... have silver eyes.

Ruby: Uh, um...

Ozpin: (turning to Y/N) And you, young man... What is your name?

Y/N hesitates, glancing at Ruby for reassurance before speaking.

Y/N: (with a bit of a German accent) M-my name is Y/N. I... I just wanted to help.

Ozpin nods, understanding, and then addresses both of them.

Ozpin: So! Where did you learn to do this? (gesturing with his head at the tablet showing Ruby's fighting)

Ruby: S-Signal Academy.

Ozpin: They taught you to use one of the most dangerous weapons ever designed?

Ruby: Well, one teacher in particular.

Ozpin: I see...

He puts the cookies on the table in front of Ruby, who tentatively picks one up, eats it in a single bite, and then, not seeing any rebuttal, shovels the rest into her mouth. Y/N watches her, a small smile forming under his hood.

Ozpin: It's just that I've only seen one other scythe-wielder of that skill before. A dusty, old crow...

Ruby: (mumbles through her full mouth) Oh! That's my uncle! (she then swallows and wipes her mouth, embarrassed) Sorry. That's my Uncle Qrow! He's a teacher at Signal. I was complete garbage before he took me under his wing. And now, I'm all like— Hooowaaah! Witchaaaa! (proceeds to make some karate-style poses and noises)

Ozpin chuckles softly, then turns his attention back to Y/N.

Ozpin: And you, Y/N. Your teleportation abilities are quite extraordinary. Where did you learn to use them?

Y/N shifts uncomfortably, his eyes darting around the room.

Y/N: I... I didn't really learn. It's just something I can do. I try to use it to help people, but... it's hard sometimes. Too many people... too much noise.

Ozpin nods sympathetically.

Ozpin: So I've noticed. (placing his cup on the table as he leans in, then sits down opposite Ruby) And what is an adorable girl such as yourself doing at a school designed to train warriors?

Ruby: Well... I want to be a Huntress.

Ozpin: You want to slay monsters?

Ruby: Yeah! I only have two more years of training left at Signal! And then I'm going to apply to Beacon! (talking faster and faster with her enthusiasm growing) You see, my sister's starting there this year, and she's trying to become a Huntress, and I'm trying to become a Huntress 'cause I wanna help people. My parents always taught us to help others, so I thought, Hey, I might as well make a career out of it! (giggles) I mean the police are alright, but Huntsmen and Huntresses are just so much more romantic and exciting and cool and really, gosh, you know! (flips out at the last part, staring at the two with a wide, crazy smile)

Glynda and Ozpin study her.

Ozpin: Do you know who I am?

Ruby: You're Professor Ozpin. You're the headmaster at Beacon.

Ozpin: (smiling) Hello.

Ruby: Nice to meet you.

Ozpin: You want to come to my school?

Ruby: More than anything.

Ozpin: (exchanging glances with Glynda, who shows her disapproval with a "Hmmph" before he turns back to Ruby) Well, okay.

Ozpin then turned his attention to Y/N, who had been quietly standing by, still cloaked.

Ozpin: And you, young man. May I see your face?

Y/N hesitated, his hands fidgeting with the edges of his cloak.

Y/N: (nervously) I... I'm not much to look at...

Ozpin offered a reassuring smile.

Ozpin: We are not here to judge appearances. Please.

With a deep breath, Y/N slowly lowered his hood, revealing his true form: his blue skin, pointy ears, blue hair, pure yellow eyes, and a tail that twitched nervously behind him. Ruby watched, fascinated, and Glynda's expression softened ever so slightly.

Ozpin: (studying him thoughtfully) Fascinating... You have quite the unique appearance, Y/N. And your abilities are extraordinary. Why do you wish to come to Beacon?

Y/N: I... I want to. To help people, like Ruby said. I... I don't want to be afraid anymore. And... and maybe find a place where I belong.

Ozpin nodded, clearly impressed by the young man's sincerity.

Ruby smiles, wide-eyed and open-mouthed.

The scene changes again as Yang Xiao Long tackles her sister in a hug aboard the large Vale Airship to Beacon, crushing the air out of her.

Yang: Oh, I can't believe my baby sister is going to Beacon with me! This is the best day ever!

Ruby: (gasping) Please stop.

Yang: (releasing her sister) But I'm so proud of you!

Ruby: Really Sis, it was nothing.

Yang: What do you mean? It was incredible! Everyone at Beacon is going to think you're the bee's knees.

Ruby: I don't want to be the "bee's knees", okay? I don't want to be any kind of knees! I just want to be a normal girl with normal knees.

Yang: What's with you? Aren't you excited?

Ruby: Of course I'm excited... I just... (sighing) I got moved ahead two years. I don't want people to think I'm special or anything.

Yang: (going over and giving her sister a one-armed hug) But you are special.

Ruby smiled weakly at her sister's words, but her eyes began scanning the airship for a familiar figure. She soon spotted Y/N sitting alone in a corner, clutching a small bag. The bag looked almost comically tiny, hinting at how little he owned. Ruby's heart went out to him.

Ruby: (to Yang) I'll be right back.

Yang nodded, watching as Ruby made her way over to Y/N. He was staring out the window, lost in thought, when Ruby approached him.

Ruby: Hey, Y/N. Mind if I join you?

Y/N looked up, startled at first, but then relaxed when he saw it was Ruby. He nodded quietly, shifting slightly to make room for her.

Y/N: (softly) H-hello, Ruby.

Ruby: (sitting down next to him) Are you okay? You seem a little... distant.

Y/N: (shrugging) Just... thinking. It's a lot to take in. New place, new people...

He trailed off, his eyes darting to the small bag at his feet. Ruby followed his gaze and gave him a sympathetic smile.

Ruby: I get it. It's overwhelming. But hey, we're in this together, right? And you've got me and Yang. You're not alone.

Y/N managed a small smile at her words.

Y/N: Th-thank you, Ruby. That... means a lot.

Ruby: (playfully) And if anyone gives you a hard time, just let me know. I'll give them a piece of my mind!

Y/N chuckled softly at her enthusiasm.

Y/N: I'll remember that.

Yang soon made her way over to where Ruby and Y/N were sitting. She had a curious expression on her face, and as she got closer, her eyes lit up.

Yang: Hey, mind if I join you two?

Ruby: (smiling) Not at all! Yang, this is Y/N. Y/N, this is my sister Yang.

Y/N looked up at Yang, feeling a bit shy. Yang, on the other hand, gave him a big, warm grin and a little wave.

Yang: Hi, Y/N! It's nice to finally meet you.

Y/N: (softly) H-hello, Yang. Nice to meet you too.

Yang sat down next to them, and Ruby could see a faint blush on her sister's cheeks. Yang seemed to be trying to make a good impression.

Yang: So, Ruby's told me a bit about you. Your teleportation power is pretty cool.

Y/N: (blushing slightly) Th-thank you. It's... it's useful, I guess.

Yang: More than just useful! I mean, I can only imagine how handy that must be in a fight. Not to mention everyday stuff.

Ruby: (grinning) Yeah, he saved my butt back there. He's pretty awesome.

Y/N: (smiling shyly) I just... did what I could.

Yang's blush deepened a bit as she continued to grin at him.

Yang: Well, I think you did great. And it's really cool that we get to be at Beacon together. If you ever need anything, just let me know, okay?

Y/N: (nodding) O-okay. Thank you, Yang.

The trios' attention is drawn to the 2-D animated newscast on Vale News Network playing nearby, talking about the robbery and showing Roman's mug shot.

Cyril: The robbery was led by nefarious criminal Roman Torchwick, who continues to evade authorities. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact the Vale Police Department. Back to you, Lisa.

The mugshot changes to Lisa Lavender, with a photo of animal-eared demonstrators holding signs saying "WE ARE NOT ANIMALS!" followed by an image of the logo of a growling red wolf's head with three scratch marks.

Lisa: Thank you, Cyril. In other news, this Saturday's Faunus Civil Rights protest turned dark when members of the White Fang disrupted the ceremony. The once peaceful organization has now disrupted...

The news feed is cut off as a hologram of Glynda replaces it.

Glynda: Hello, and welcome to Beacon!

Yang: Who's that?

Glynda: My name is Glynda Goodwitch.

Yang: Oh.

Glynda: You are among a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy! Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world. (disappears)

Ruby: Oh, wow! Look, you can see Signal from up here!

Ruby and other students look through the glass walls at the town below.

Ruby: I guess home isn't too far after all!

Yang: Beacon's our home, now.

The three hear a passenger groaning and hunched over nearby, running to the back of the ship.

Y/N: Well... I guess the view isn't for everyone.

Ruby: It was a nice moment while it lasted.

The ship is seen approaching Beacon across a large body of water.

Yang: I wonder who we're gonna meet!

Ruby: I just hope they're better than Vomit Boy. Oh, Yang, gross! You have puke on your shoe!

Yang: Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, gross!

Ruby: Get-Get away! Get away from me! Get away from me! Get away from me! Get away from me!

Y/N teleported away to avoid sensory overload.

Meanwhile

Meanwhile, in a more secluded part of the airship, Ozpin and Glynda stood in a dimly lit room, the hum of the ship's engines a distant background noise. Ozpin was deep in thought, staring out a small window while Glynda stood nearby, her expression a mixture of concern and curiosity.

Glynda: You've been thinking about the boy, haven't you? The blue skin, yellow eyes, and tail... those aren't natural. And his powers... they're not a Semblance, are they?

Ozpin: (sighing, turning to face her) No, they are not. There's something very unusual about Y/N. His abilities... they remind me of something else. Something far more sinister.

Glynda: (narrowing her eyes) You think Gaunt could have been involved?

Ozpin: (nodding slowly) It's a distinct possibility. It wouldn't be the first time Gaunt has experimented on humans, twisting them into something else. Y/N is lucky to have escaped.

Glynda: (raising an eyebrow) Are we sure he escaped? Gaunt doesn't usually let his creations go without a leash.

Ozpin: (grimly) Indeed. Gaunt is known for keeping a tight grip on his experiments. If Y/N truly escaped, it would be a rare occurrence. But we must remain vigilant. Gaunt would never willingly let one of his creations roam free without some form of control.

Glynda crossed her arms, her gaze shifting to the window.

Glynda: If Gaunt is involved, Y/N could be in more danger than he realizes. We need to keep a close eye on him.

Ozpin: Agreed. We must ensure that Beacon is a safe place for him, where he can learn to control his abilities without fear of being recaptured. And we must be prepared for the possibility that Gaunt may come looking for him.

Glynda: (nodding) I'll make sure the staff is informed, discreetly.
