Chapter Twenty-Four | Seaside Secrets
The rest of the day passed in a blur. I went through the motions, my mind elsewhere, my heart tangled in uncertainty. When five o'clock finally came, I gathered my things and headed home, feeling a strange mix of excitement and apprehension.
At home, I stood in front of my closet, staring blankly at the options. Eleven o'clock. Conrad would be here soon. I didn't change out of my pajamas, still skeptical about whether he would actually show up. Just in case, I heated up a couple of pizza slices—something to keep me from completely unraveling.
As the hour approached, my nerves began to claw at me. If he did show up, what would tonight mean for us? With his new responsibilities, would there be space left for us? For me?
The doorbell rang. I took a deep breath, steadying myself, before opening the door. There he was. Conrad. He looked as handsome as ever, standing there with that undeniable confidence, the kind of power he exuded effortlessly.
He was dressed in a black jacket, a white t-shirt underneath, and black slacks. "Hi," he said, his voice a low rumble, sending warmth through me, despite the chill in the air.
I furrowed my brows, confused. "What are you wearing?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe. The cold air made me shiver slightly, and my pajama shorts weren't helping. I noticed him looking me up and down, his gaze lingering on my legs, shameless in its intensity. He didn't even try to hide his smirk.
I snapped my fingers in front of his face. "Focus," I commanded.
Without a word, he grabbed me, pulling me into his embrace with such force that my forehead almost collided with his chin. The warmth of his jacket surrounded me, and for a brief moment, I let myself lean into it, letting the heat calm my nerves. But I held my ground, refusing to let him take all the shots.
"Go change into something warm and light," he said, his tone serious.
I blinked up at him, utterly baffled. "Warm and light? Are you joking?" I raised an eyebrow, unable to hide my skepticism. "What the fuck is 'warm and light'?"
He smirked, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Is this how you were as a kid, or is this a new quality of yours?" His voice was teasing, but there was an edge beneath it.
Before I could respond, he reached up and flicked my forehead, a quick, sharp motion that made me gasp.
"Ow!" I rubbed the spot, irritated. "What was that for?"
"Go change," he commanded, pushing me gently inside. "I'll be waiting."
I groaned, but turned and went to change quickly into a pair of cargo pants and a tight crop top, grabbing my jacket before heading out the door. But when I stepped onto the porch, I was met with an unexpected emptiness. I paused, looking around, before I heard the sound of an engine roaring to life. The familiar hum of gears shifting.
I spun around, and there he was. Conrad, on a black Ecosse Spirit Superbike, helmet in place, the visor up, giving me a clear view of his cocky smirk. He motioned with his leather-gloved hand, a silent command for me to approach.
My heart skipped, and I glanced around, wondering if anyone had heard. My brother's late-night motorcycle runs flashed in my mind.
"Come on, we're getting late."
"Late?" I scoffed, still not moving closer. "Conrad, it's eleven at night. The only thing we're late for is an owl's birthday party."
He laughed, shaking his head. "Get on, Thea."
"No."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by my refusal. I smirked, enjoying the brief victory.
"I'm not getting on that thing."
"Yes, you are," he said, his voice low, the command in it unmistakable.
I crossed my arms, glaring at him. For a long moment, we just stood there, exchanging glances. Then, without warning, he grabbed me by the belt loops of my cargo pants and yanked me toward him. His arm wound around my waist, pulling me against his chest, and I felt the heat of his body through his jacket.
I felt my face flush, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold or from the electric touch of his hands. He leaned in close, his breath hot against my ear.
"Babydoll," he whispered, his accent thick and slow, "I'm only going to say this once." His words were dangerous, full of the promise of something more. "You're either going to ride this bike with me, or you're going to ride me tonight."
My eyes went wide and if they weren't attached it my head, they would've bounced on the earth like ping pong balls. I almost couldn't believe what I heard.
I was about to argue, but the fire in his eyes stopped me. Slowly, I got on the bike, my heart racing as he chuckled darkly behind me. He handed me a helmet, and as I put it on, I cursed the blow-dried hair I was about to ruin.
"Hold on," he instructed.
When I didn't, his hands moved, guiding mine around his torso, locking them in place. "That's better."
The engine roared to life beneath us, and we shot off into the night, the cold wind whipping past us. The tension between us crackled like electricity, but neither of us spoke.
The moon hung high in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the road as Conrad and I sped through the night. About thirty minutes into the ride, my hands were still wrapped around him, the heat of his body soothing me against the cold. I rested my cheek against his back, feeling the texture of his leather jacket against my skin. There was a change in the atmosphere, a certain tang in the air—I could taste the salt and feel the moisture. We were nearing the beach.
A smile etched its way across my face as we came to a stop. I slid off the bike, giggling as I saw the sand just a few feet away. Memories of childhood summers spent at the beach flooded my mind. I had always loved the beach but had grown out of frequent visits once I went to college.
"Happy?" Conrad asked, biting the edge of his glove and pulling it off with his teeth, his eyes sparkling under the moonlight.
"It's perfect," I said, my heart swelling with affection. Him and me under the moonlight, at the beach—it was like a dream. He'd won me over completely.
"What if I said no?" I teased, raising an eyebrow at him.
He grinned, his expression playful. "Then I'd say the night is still young and," he leaned in, his breath warm against my ear, "I have a feeling you're gonna want to kiss me in a minute."
I laughed, shaking my head. "You are one confident motherfucker." He giggled in response.
"Come on!" he said, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the sand. We ran, our footsteps light and carefree, like two kids without a worry in the world. The cool sand beneath our feet felt comforting, grounding us in the moment.
"Thea!" I saw Elise running towards us, her romper dancing in the wind as she did. My smile widened as she took me into a loving hug and I returned her enthusiasm.
"Oh my god!" We jumped around in the sand, excited to see each other like long-lost friends.
"Hey, mystery girl!" Miles joined us, lazily walking behind Elise and pulling me into a hug. For some reason, he reminded me of my brother.
"I have a name, you know." I bumped his shoulder much to Conrad's annoyance. Miles chuckled as Conrad pulled me back into his embrace.
"All right. Enough small talk. Let's get started." Conrad took off his jacket, as did Miles, and I noticed how they were wearing strikingly similar plain white t-shirts.
"Would you look at that, you're twinning!" Elsie mused, knowing it would irk the frenemies. But I knew they were brothers at heart.
"Don't tell me we're skinny dipping," I said, looking between the three of them.
"In this weather? You wish. I'd freeze to death," Miles said, walking past me towards Conrad.
"Then?"
Conrad chuckled heartily, slipped an arm around my waist, and slowly turned us around. He extended his other hand over my shoulder and pointed into the distance.
I squinted my eyes and saw little flashes of light getting bigger and bigger with each passing moment. It wasn't long before I understood what we were doing.
"ATVs?!" I exclaimed. I'd never driven one. It had been on my bucket list for a very long time. When Conrad nodded affirmatively, I couldn't help but jump into his arms, squealing. "God, I could kiss you right now!"
"What did I say?" He winked at me and kissed my cheek. I decided to one-up him and gave him a quick peck as a thank you. "Come on, let's go." He patted my butt and ran off, me following close behind.
The four ATVs roared to life, their headlights slicing through the night. Conrad handed me a helmet, and as I slipped it on, I felt a rush of exhilaration. The beach was ours, a vast playground under the stars.
"Ready?" Conrad asked, his voice muffled through the helmet.
"Born ready," I replied, my voice shaking with excitement.
We mounted our ATVs, the engines vibrating beneath us. Conrad took the lead, and I followed, with Elise and Miles close behind. The roar of the engines mingled with the sound of the waves crashing against the shore.
The thrill of the ride consumed me. We sped along the shoreline, the cool ocean breeze whipping against our faces. I stole glances at Conrad, his silhouette strong and confident, and my heart swelled with joy. This was freedom, pure and simple.
Elise pulled up beside me, her laughter infectious. "This is insane!" she shouted over the noise.
"I know!" I shouted back, grinning from ear to ear.
Miles, always the daredevil, zoomed ahead, performing a few daring maneuvers. Elise and I shared a look, shaking our heads in mock disapproval.
"Show-off!" Elise yelled, but there was no hiding her amusement.
As we raced along the beach, I felt a sense of camaraderie. The four of us, together under the stars, sharing an unforgettable night. The world felt infinite, the possibilities endless.
Conrad slowed down, signaling for us to stop. We came to a halt near a secluded spot, the moonlight casting a silvery glow on the sand. We dismounted, our laughter filling the air.
"Let's take a break," Conrad suggested, taking my hand.
We gathered around, sitting on the soft sand. Conrad pulled me close, his arm around my shoulders. Elise leaned against Miles, her head resting on his shoulder. The night was perfect, the kind that only existed in dreams.
"You know," Miles said, breaking the silence, "this is the kind of night we'll remember forever."
"Absolutely," Elise agreed, her eyes twinkling with happiness.
I looked at Conrad, his face illuminated by the moonlight. "Thank you," I whispered, my voice filled with emotion.
He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Anything for you, Thea."
We sat there, basking in the beauty of the moment. The sound of the waves, the gentle breeze, the company of friends—it was all perfect.
As the night wore on, we decided to continue our ride. This time, we paired up on the ATVs. Conrad and I shared one, while Elise and Miles took another. The beach stretched out before us, a canvas of endless possibilities.
Conrad held me close as we rode, his warmth seeping into me. I rested my head against his back, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was moments like these that made life magical.
"Hold on tight," Conrad said, his voice a soothing melody in the night.
We sped along the shoreline, the stars our only witnesses. The thrill of the ride was intoxicating, a blend of adrenaline and pure joy. I felt alive, every sense heightened, every moment cherished.
Elise and Miles rode beside us, their laughter a constant companion. We raced, weaved, and danced with the waves, our ATVs leaving trails in the sand. It was as if time had stopped, and the world belonged to us.
Eventually, we found ourselves at a secluded cove, the perfect spot to end our adventure. We dismounted, our legs wobbly from the ride, but our spirits soaring.
"That was incredible," Elise said, her eyes shining with excitement.
Miles nodded, a satisfied grin on his face. "We need to do this more often."
Conrad pulled me into a tight embrace, his lips brushing against my forehead. "You had fun?" he asked, his voice tender.
"More than I could ever imagine," I replied, my heart brimming with love.
We sat on the sand, the night enveloping us in its embrace. Conrad held me close, our fingers entwined. Elise and Miles sat nearby, their laughter and whispers blending with the sound of the waves.
As I looked up at the starry sky, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. For this night, for these friends, for the love that filled my heart. Life was beautiful, and I knew that this was just the beginning of many more adventures to come.
"Would you like to go for a walk?" Conrad asked, looking at me hopefully. I nodded, and we brushed off the sand as we began to stroll along the shore. I kept glancing back, only to see Miles and Elise absorbed in their own world. As I turned my head forward, I stumbled and reached out for support, inadvertently pulling Conrad down with me into the sand.
I fell onto him, our lips barely grazing as we found ourselves lost in each other's eyes. I swallowed hard, my throat suddenly dry as his blue eyes locked onto mine. My hand reached out to caress his face, but he flipped us around before I could make contact.
A mischievous glint appeared in his eyes as he leaned forward. I closed my eyes instinctively, waiting for him to close the distance, but the kiss never came. Opening my eyes, I found him struggling to contain his laughter, his body shaking until he finally gave in. I playfully slapped his muscular arm and attempted to move from beneath him, but he was too strong. He flipped us around again, my hair flying and bringing sand with it, but it didn't bother him. When his laughter subsided, he gently pinched my pouting lips and tucked my hair behind my ear. His warm hand rested on my cheek as he pulled me in, kissing me for real this time, as if it were the last time.
Under the moonlit sky, surrounded by the people I cherished, I knew that I had found my place. This was home, and I was exactly where I was meant to be.
