chapter sixteen
Friday night football games have developed into Friday night soccer games. Even if I wasn't obligated to go to the football games, I feel more obligated to go to the soccer games. Not only is my brother playing them, but my boyfriend.
But until later tonight, it's an ordinary school day.
There's isn't anything like homecoming for soccer. If the team goes to state, then there's hype for the team, but nothing else in this school is as pumped up as football. Maybe that's how it is for every school.
Laurance's popularity among the ladies has not decreased whatsoever from when we got together all those months ago. While some have simmered down and understood that he is taken, others have remained stubborn and chased after him without a single care in the world as to who I am.
Maybe I'm just a jealous person, but it's not my favorite pastime to watch someone flirt with my boyfriend.
Laurance squeezes my hand to bring my attention back to him. It seems I've zoned out while walking down the halls, and he has taken it upon himself to get me out of my trance like state.
I look at him with a soft smile, a bit out of it as I walk forward. He likes to carry my backpack around on top of his. He claims it's his way of being a gentleman, but it simply allows me to be lazy.
We walk into class together and he places my backpack against the side of my desk before kissing the top of my head. "Tonight after the game I may be a bit more busy than normal," he tells me, looking down at me. "But I won't try to take long."
I nod my head, sitting down in my chair before glancing over at the clock. "Laur, you'll be late if you don't leave for class. I don't think Hayden wouldn't like to see another tardy in your attendance. You can get a lunch detention from it."
He only laughs and nods his head, telling me that I am correct as usual and that he'll see me at lunch. Laurance kisses my head before he walks off and out of the door to his classroom.

For it being late in the school year, the night air still liked to be a bit nasty from time to time. It appears that tonight it has decided to be brutal by pushing cold wind against my cheeks, turning them a cherry red.
While I'm under a shared blanket with my mom and sat in the middle of her, Alex, and Garroth, I can't help but feel pity for the boys on the field. They're running around in shorts and their short sleeved jerseys. They must be freezing when they stop moving.
We're over halfway through the first half, and I look down at the hot chocolate in my hands. I know it's not the most practical (or expected drink) of the night, but my mind wonders over to the boys once again. Once halftime hits, I fear they'll freeze. They have blankets and some sweats, but that can only do so much within the short amount of time that they have of a break.
I look at Garroth with a soft frown. At least in baseball he'd be wearing pants in this weather. Garroth looks over at me, confused. "Baby sister? What's the matter?" He asks.
"The boys must be cold. Can't we bring them something to drink or anything to warm them up," I asks. "They're about to take their break any minute now."
He only laughs and slowly stands up. He had his own blanket, claiming he didn't want to come off as a home wrecker to his baby brother if he shared one with Alex. I understood, and I think it made Alex happy beyond belief to be able to wrap herself around the blanket like a burrito. "If it makes you feel better, I'll come with you to buy something to drink. I'm sure they'll appreciate it."
As if her name was spoken, Alex's head pops up from between us with a soft smile. She looks at Garroth, giving him a goofy smile. "Can I come with? If Y/N gets the chance to kiss her boyfriend, I want to kiss mine," she jokes.
The three of us trudged down the cold bleacher into the open wind. The concessions stand was open, and the line was fairly short. I glance back at the time to see they have about a minute and a half before break and smile to myself.
When the clock ticks down to zero and the team huddled into their area for their break, the boys spot us and meet us halfway.
Garroth was kind enough to carry the drinks while the two of us slowly made our way to them, placing their hands in ours and telling them how well they were doing.
Laurance looks at me and holds onto the cup. "I nearly envy you with your blanket," he says. "I left my things over there."
I shakes my head and bring him closer to me to wrap it around the two of us. My cold lips press against his cheek in hopes to lighten his spirit, and quiet encouragements are made to support it.
Before Laurance leaves, a soft kiss is pressed against my lips finished with a cheeky smile. "I have to find a way to kiss the luck out of you," he tells me before jogging off once more.
And with that, I freeze for another half.

By the time the game ended I was thankful to leave. The win Phoenix Drop was able to carry home was nice, but the thought of a warm car to go to was even better.
Like every game, I'm making my way over to I normally meet Laurance. I know he said this time me may be a little late. But when I get there, I see him standing halfway to the school with a girl. She giggles as he stares down at her, smiling softly. I frown when I see a sweatshirt of his in her arms, and my heart breaks when the conclusion that it's his is proven when he takes it back.
I take a step back and sigh, hanging my head while Laurance runs off into the school leaving me alone.
