miscommunication

Evelyn was called to the cafe by Spencer and Liv. The two overly concerned friends wanting to catch up with the girl after she had seemingly gone MIA for a couple of days. It's not that she was going through anything too life-changing. She just simply needed a break from things.

"Was I hallucinating or were you in brother's room a couple of days ago?" Liv asked as Spencer slid over an iced tea and a sandwich for Evelyn.

"This feels like an intervention," she sighed, taking a massive bite of her sandwich. "But, no you weren't hallucinating. I was there. But, things didn't go too well so I didn't stay for that long."

Spencer propped his elbows on the counter, peering curiously over at the Latina. "What happened?"

"I asked him about that stupid letter that he put into my locker and he thought it'd be a good gesture to win me back," she scoffed. "Then I told him how I was trying my best to move on and he straight up told me that he doesn't want me happy if it's not with him."

"What an ass!" Liv exclaimed. "First, he purposely ended practice and now he's telling you that he wants you to be miserable! Is he serious?"

"He ended practice?" Evelyn asked.

"The vibe between him and coach on that field right now is bananas," Spencer sighed. "Obviously, he's going easy on him out of guilt."

"And Jordan's testing the boundaries, seeing how much he can get away with," Liv finished shaking her head.

"Surprise, surprise," Evelyn said.

"The more he allows Jordan to question his authority, the more everybody else gonna do the same," Spencer said. "And once that happens, it's over. Our team is as good as done."

Liv sighed. "Great. Yet another reason pushing you towards choosing South Crenshaw."

"I ain't exactly feeling them, either," Spencer said.

"Oh, yeah, cause of Darnell," Liv pointed out.

"Mmm," Evelyn moaned, nodding her head in approval. "Talk about tall, dark, and yum! I don't know what they feed those boys in Nevada but, Darnell is one tree I would love to cl—"

"Oh, my God!" Liv hissed, placing a hand over her mouth. "Sorry about her. Are you ready to talk to your dad yet?"

"And say what?" he grimaced.

"Sorry," Evelyn winced. "About the whole Darnell thing. I didn't mean it."

"Look, 7 years raising another man's child is a long time," he sighed.

"What is it?" Liv asked, noticing Spencer's attention on his phone.

"It's Chris," he answered. "His doctor cleared him to run again. Barring any setbacks, he should be good for the season opener this fall."

"Chris sucks," Evelyn stated bluntly. "No offense, but dumping my best friend via text message...So, not cool."

"What she means is that's amazing. Good for him," Liv sighed.

Evelyn's head shot up as a thought came across her mind. "Wait, isn't that fine-ass, tall-ass, yum—"

"Get to the point, Evelyn," Liv spat.

"Isn't Darnell a quarterback?" she asked, slightly giggling. "If Chris comes back what happens?"

"Let me worry about that," Spencer told her.

The following day, Evelyn went to school and did her normal routine. Attending her classes and trying her best to once again, avoid her ex-boyfriend. After school, she went to practice and had a more positive attitude about her change in events for the track meet since her talk with Asher.

"So...you don't seem to be complaining about coach anymore. If anything you have a better attitude today," Destiny noticed, once practice was over and they stayed back for a bit. "That white boy just knows what to say, huh?"

"Asher," Evelyn corrected with a slight grin on her face. "And, sure, I guess, you could say he had something to do with it."

"Go, you," Destiny smirked. "I mean, they do say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone new."

"Ew," she cringed. "No wonder you and my mom get along so well."

She giggled in response. "Great minds think alike."

"Okay, I need to shower," Evelyn sighed, looking at her phone. "Asher wants to hang."

"Text me!" Destiny yelled.

After taking a quick shower and making sure she smelled decent and didn't wreak of sweat. Evelyn got dressed in her clothes from earlier which consisted of a denim skirt that came about mid-thigh and a white cropped cardigan that hung loosely off of her shoulder. She made her way out to the parking lot and drove over to the cafe where he told her to meet at.

Walking into the cafe, she didn't expect to see Jordan, JJ, and Enrique crowded around the pool table with Asher leaning against the wall. But, as she walked towards them the brunette's eyes lit up and he immediately walked over to her.

"I'm sorry," he immediately blurted out, noticing the wary expression on her face. "You don't seem like you want to be here."

"Um, it's fine," she quickly responded. "We can do this another time. Or—"

"Or you can stay?" he suggested, turning his head to look at the three boys. "You used to hang out with us all the time. Plus, Enrique's your brother."

"I guess," she reluctantly agreed, walking over to the pool table.

"What are you doing here?" Jordan bluntly asked.

"Dude," Enrique hissed, nudging him harshly in the ribs. "But, he's right. What are you doing here? I don't know if you noticed...but it's a dude hangout. No chicks allowed."

"Guys," JJ chuckled, throwing Asher a wink. "If Evie wants to hang out with us, let her. We all know she's the better twin, anyway."

"Thank you, blondie," Evelyn grinned.

"Anyway," Enrique obnoxiously coughed. "Back to what we were talking about. Day party at Max's on Monday, right, JJ?"

"Not to be that guy again," Asher spoke up. "But we'll still be at practice."

"And mom and dad will kill you if they find out you went to another party and skipped practice, Ricky," Evelyn said, glaring at her brother.

"Well, they're not gonna find out. Right, Evie?" Enrique scoffed, lifting his eyebrow up at his sister.

"And I'll just call practice early again," Jordan said, as Rochelle Mosely approached the pool table to give him a lecture about his game.

"She's not wrong," Asher said, once Rochelle left.

"Oh, God," Jordan groaned. "First you take my girlfriend and now you want to give me a lecture."

Evelyn groaned, glaring at Jordan. "I dumped you!"

"I figured, with your dad being back, you'd be more committed to the team," Asher said. "Honestly, you've become kind of a distraction, man."

"You're calling me a distraction!" Jordan shot back. "After everything you put our team through last season, really?"

"Dude," JJ stepped in placing a hand on Jordan's chest.

"No, he's right, and I have to live with those mistakes every damn day, but that was then, okay? Right now, I'm working like crazy to be the best teammate and leader that I can be. That's why I'm on the field every day after practice, grinding. Same way you and I used to get after it when we were freshmen. No one's gonna be able to question my dedication. Will they be able to say the same about you?" he lectured.

"I'm gonna get a drink," Evelyn mumbled, awkwardly walking away from the three boys.

"Hey," Asher greeted, plopping down beside the girl after he realized she wasn't coming back. "Did I do something wrong?"

"No...I don't know," she sighed. "I must've misunderstood your message when you asked me to hang out. I wasn't really expecting to see Jordan, JJ, or my brother. I thought it was gonna be just...us."

"My mistake," he said, bringing a hand up to scratch the back of his neck. "I thought it'd be less pressure if there were other people here. Plus, Jordan's been getting in my head, and making me feel bad about this."

"Then I'll make it easier for you," she said, getting up from the stool and grabbing her bag. "Goodbye, Asher."

"No, wait," Asher reached out for her hand.

"No, if you want to listen to whatever Jordan's saying then do that," Evelyn sighed, retracting her hand from his hold. "But, I can't do this. Sorry."
