mending relationships
The following Monday after the football and volleyball game was back to school as usual. Evelyn did her usual morning routine of going to Starbucks and dropping her younger brother off at daycare. But, this time with a twist, Enrique had joined them in her car this morning due to his own car issues.
"So, you and that pendejo are broken up or what?" Enrique asked as he and his sister walked down the hallways of the school.
"Don't call him that!" she hissed as they simultaneously pulled their phones out watched the meme that had been sent throughout the school of Spencer fumbling the ball.
"Stupid Asher," they said in unison and shared the same look clearing the meme from their phone, and continued on walking.
"We're the only non-problematic people in this school, Ricky," Evelyn sighed, taking a bite out of her cake pop.
"That's what happens when you go to a white privileged school," Enrique chuckled.
"Hello, Hernandez twins!" Layla cheerily greeted looping her arms through theirs. "I need to talk to Evelyn."
"If you and Asher break up..." he trailed off placing his phone to his ear. "You know my number."
"We dated for two days in middle school, Enrique," Layla giggled before getting serious. "Worse two days of my life. Goodbye!"
"What's up, Layla?" Evelyn asked moving her attention to her friend.
"So...I kind of did something and as my best friend, I need you to play along," Layla said, grinning at her friend sheepishly. "You know that Shakespeare project for Ms. Bench?"
"Yeah, Enrique made Ms. Bench put us together so I can do all the work. Which I did. But, that's not the point. What did you do?" she said.
"I need you to hang out with me and Liv at the cafe today after school. I asked Ms. Bench to put us together for the project," Layla explained. "But, I feel like the only way it'd go over well is if our mutual bestie is there with us. Which is you."
"I'm in," she agreed. "But, you have to buy me all the iced teas and sandwiches I want."
"Deal. Meet us there."

After school, Evelyn was seriously dreading hanging out with Layla and Liv. On one hand, Liv was her best friend and she was hiding a terrible secret that Evelyn now knew about. And to make matters worse now that she knows the secret she feels like she's betraying Layla in a way.
"Evie, what are you doing here?" Liv asked spotting the girl walk through the door.
"Oh, I'm here to assist you guys with the project. I finished it last night and Layla mentioned that you two were here so, I thought I'd lend you guys my brain," Evelyn explained sitting down next to Layla.
"Mmm, I guess that explains the iced tea and sandwich on the table," Liv mumbled.
Evelyn's eyes lit up as she reached forward to grab the sandwich. "Ooh, is this a—"
"Turkey, bacon, and avocado, with light mayo. Your favorite," Layla said.
"I love you," she moaned, taking a bite of her sandwich.
"What's up, ladies?" Asher asked, walking into the cafe alongside JJ.
"Uh, what are you guys doing here?" Liv asked him.
"Oh, would you look at that!" Evelyn piped up reading a text off of her phone. "Jordan is begging for my forgiveness. Gotta go! Thanks for the sandwich, Layla!"
"No!" Liv shrieked, watching her best friend run out of the cafe.
The text from Jordan was a bit cryptic, to say the least. It was a random address telling her to go there with a separate message about how sorry he was. Evelyn had pulled her car up to the address and was very confused about the neighborhood she was in. But, the text he sent her said to just knock on the door and so she walked up to the small house and knocked on it.
A young black boy had opened the door grinning up at her. "Hey, you must be Evelyn. Jordan's girlfriend. I'm Dillon, he didn't mention his girlfriend was hot," he said holding his hand out for her.
The girl furrowed her eyebrows at the overly eager young boy. "Is Jordan here?"
"Inside with my mom in the kitchen. Come on in," Dillon said opening the door so she could walk in. "They're in there."
"Jordan?" Evelyn questioned watching as he cut up some vegetables. "What am I doing here? More importantly...who are these people? That child in there called me hot." she whispered.
"Babe, we're in Crenshaw. Use that brain of yours," Jordan chuckled, wiping his hands on his jeans. "This is Spencer's house and that child is his brother."
"Oh, that makes sense," she hummed, turning to face an older black woman who she assumed was his mom and holding her hand out. "Sorry, I'm Evelyn, Jordan's girlfriend."
"I know," Ms. James said, reciprocating the gesture. "Your boyfriend over there showed me a picture of you and wouldn't stop talking about how great you are at volleyball and track."
"It's not like Jordan would know," she scoffed.
"Oh, I think I hear Dillon calling me out there," Ms. James winced looking over at Jordan's guilty face before walking out of the kitchen.
"Look, Evie," Jordan sighed, taking ahold of her hands. "I am so sorry. Like...really sorry. I was running some extra drills after practice and I know that's not a good enough excuse for missing one of the most important games of the season. Especially when you always support me at my games. Your brother threatened to kick my ass if I pulled that again."
"I should've had Enrique kick your ass," Evelyn scoffed, removing her hands from his grasp. "It's okay. All that built-up anger because of you made me play better. I just...took it all out on the ball. I love you, Jordan...But, pull something like that again and I'll tell my abuelita to kick your ass. She's from East LA. She'll do it with a smile on her face."
"I love you more," Jordan hummed, brushing his thumb against her face before leaning down to kiss her.
"Ooh," Dillon giggled peeking his head into the kitchen.
"Boy! If you don't leave them alone!" Ms. James yelled.
"So, what are you doing here? Kind of rude for you to just come into someone's house and invite your girlfriend," Evelyn said, looking up at her boyfriend.
"I need to talk to Spencer and more importantly I needed my girlfriend to forgive me," he replied. "Now, here's some greens. Get to chopping."
The couple spent time in the kitchen chopping greens for Spencer's mom while she and Dillon returned back to the kitchen once everything between them was resolved. Some time passed by as they waited for Spencer to come home, and once he did he didn't seem happy about seeing Jordan.
"Jordan, what are you and Evelyn doing here?" Spencer asked walking into the kitchen with someone else right next to him.
"There they are," Ms. James announced.
"Looks like he bastardizing them poor greens is what it look like...she doing fine, though. I'm Coop," she said, eyeing the short Latina beside him.
"Evelyn. But, all my friends call me Evie. Nice to meet you," she said holding her hand.
"You are one pretty girl, Evie," Coop grinned, shaking her hand.
"Don't even think about it. I have dibs," Dillon piped up.
"Actually," Jordan spoke up turning around to nudge the young boy's shoulder. "She's my girlfriend."
"Yeah, but they were in a fight just before she got here," Dillon told Coop. "So, we'll see how long they'll last."
"Dillon, stop telling their business," Ms. James scolded.
For some reason, the trip to Spencer's house that Evelyn thought was just going to be an apology from her boyfriend. Ended up turning into a cookout at his house that Jordan and for some random reason Coop had somehow convinced her into staying for.
"Evie, this is Patience. Patience this is Evelyn but all her friends call her Evie, so now I call her that. Her boyfriend's the antisocial one over there in the corner...the light skin one," Coop said, introducing the two girls.
"Nice to meet you, Patience," she said holding her hand out for the girl.
"You too, Evie," she teased.
"So...are we gonna keep staring at the dominoes or are we going to play?" Evelyn asked rubbing her hands together.
"You don't look white. But, you're from Beverly Hills. Enlighten me," Coop stated bluntly.
"Coop!" Spencer hissed nudging her side.
"My mom's Mexican and my dad's Cuban," she shrugged. "My mom was born in East LA...Her company's based out here."
"Company?" Spencer asked.
"Clothing line. Hernandez Designs," she responded.
"Hernandez Designs. Yeah, they have some nice ass pieces. Super expensive though," Patience hummed. "Wait, Hernandez...your dad's that good NFL player, right?"
"Yo, good is an understatement. He's great, the best...But, I'm sure she doesn't want to sit around talking about her dad," Spencer said, looking across his backyard and waving Jordan over to sit with them.
"Look at him," Coop said, watching as Jordan nudged his girlfriend off of her seat and sit her on his lap. "About time you joined us, babyface."
"It's Jordan," he corrected, wrapping his arms around Evelyn's waist.
"It's Jordan," Coop mocked, holding her hand out for him to shake. "Look at you, sticking up for yourself. Hey, Jordan. I might like you."
As the evening went on some of Spencer's friends started showing up. Discussions about music and different artists came along with some insults being directed towards Jordan...and Spencer.
"I vote we take Carlton here and Eminem. The folks keep Spencer and Stacey Dash," Chris said.
Evelyn who was still sitting on her boyfriend's lap even after moving inside of the house due to the lingering stares from the guys was finally getting fed up and decided to speak up. "Are you serious right now? First of all, his name is Jordan, not Carlton. Second, this is Spencer's house and you're disrespecting him. You've been disrespecting my boyfriend and Spencer all night. So, shut up because it's getting really annoying."
"Listen, Miss Beverly Hills," Chris chuckled. "I was kidding, relax. So, maybe you keep sitting there on your little boyfriend's lap and keep your mouth shut like you've been doing all night."
"Nah, bro, now you showing up," Spencer said, standing up from his seat. "It's one thing to disrespect me in my house. But, to tell her to keep her mouth shut is another."
"Ugh, when did you get so sensitive? Guess Beverly Hills got you all soft now, huh?" Chris asked, standing up to face him. "Hey, you, pretty boy, and his girl can head back anytime if it gets too hot. Don't let us stop you."
Spencer shot back. "If you got something to say. Just say it."
"You ain't got no business wearing that Crenshaw ring no more. You don't belong here. Since you felt like you had to leave us to succeed, you should have just stayed gone. We got an upgrade anyways. Ain't that right, Cam?" Chris told him.
"You know, honestly," Jordan said with a smirk on his face. "I doubt Cam could even touch Spencer on the field."
"I second that," Evelyn piped up. "Pretty sure we got the upgrade."
"What do you know about football Miss Beverly Hills?" Cam scoffed.
Evelyn threw him a soft smirk turning to look at Spencer. "Spence, who's my dad again?"
Spencer chuckled at her question. "Joaquin Hernandez. Y'all might know him he has four super bowl rings, or something like that."
"Dude, don't forget about the Heisman," Jordan added.
"Whatever," Chris scoffed. "We'll, uh, we'll see you in the playoffs. Oh, wait that's right. Beverly Hills ain't been to the playoffs in years."
"Oh, they will this year. They got me," Spencer said.
"Why wait?" Jordan asked. "Our boys can be here in 45. Why don't you grab your squad? Let's settle this now."
Spencer stepped forward. "I'll tell you what? Y'all win, you can take this Crenshaw ring off my finger for good."
"Not to rain on your parade," Evelyn whispered to her boyfriend. "But, I'm pretty sure Enrique's on a date...Or a booty call."
"Oh, please. Enrique is more my twin than he is yours. I call and he comes," Jordan scoffed, pulling his phone to call her twin brother.
"As long as I get Liv all to myself," she mumbled pressing a kiss to his bicep. "See you."
"Wait!" Spencer yelled quickly running after her as she walked out to her car.
"Yeah, Spence?" she asked.
"Thanks," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "You know? For having my back earlier. We don't really know each other and you kind of told him off. So, thanks."
"No problem. Any friend of Olivia's is a friend of mine. Plus, you had my back after he told me to shut my mouth. So, we're even," she said, touching his arm lightly. "See you in a bit."
Once she got to the field and parked her car. Evelyn immediately spotted her twin brother standing right next to Jordan. "Your boyfriend told me that you left before him. Slow-ass driver!" Enrique yelled hitting his sister on the shoulder.
"I'll make sure you can never play football again," she threatened, twisting his wrist. "Say sorry!"
"Let go!" he yelped. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
"Good. I'm gonna sit with Patience and Coop," she told them, mainly looking at her boyfriend. "Make sure not to hurt your pretty face, mi amor. I love you," she cooed pinching his cheeks and pulling him down for a kiss.
"I love you more, baby," he mumbled against her lips, slipping his phone into her back pocket.
"Baker...Don't make me want to off myself. I've seen enough," Enrique intervened.
"Sorry, I can't help it, man. My girlfriend's hot," Jordan whined, watching her walk away and sit with Coop and Patience.
Coop's face was all scrunched up once she saw Evelyn walk towards them. "That was some nasty-ass PDA."
She shrugged in response. "My boyfriend's hot.
