The flow of the conversation returned to a point where I had to avoid his gaze in order to hide how vulnerable I was whenever it came to him. "Well. I like my job, so."
"Just your job?"
My eyes widened at that, and I glanced up to see that he was smirking. "What? Holy bananas that was not nice, Blake. Not nice."
He laughed, running his fingers through my hair which I deemed as a tad too intimate for my weak heart.
"Is there going to be a conclusion to this conversation?" I asked in a tentative manner, gaze remaining slightly uncertain. "I mean, 'cuz like, we're getting nowhere."
"Yeah? Well," Blake considered the question for a moment. "I have no idea how we got from my family dinner to this but I just want to say that I'm not against having a romantic relationship with you."
"H-hold on, so—you're saying that you're bi?" I clarified, because my banana heart was not going to be played in circles just because.
"I might be, because I've never really thought about it before. There wasn't any time to, and you know me. I just go with whatever shit life throws."
We both settled into an awkward silence then, until an idea popped into my head and I couldn't seem to get it out.
"Date me, then. For one day."
There was yet another moment of silence, and naturally, I could not bring myself to look him in the eye.
"Forget what I s—" "Okay."
Just when I thought that the level of awkwardness couldn't possibly have increased, it did.
"O-okay? As in. Yes? You'll date me?" I wasn't sure what sort of expression I had on my face, but I sure hope it wasn't a creepy one. "For one day, I mean. Just to—y'know, test. You said you've ever really explored it, right? So. Yeah."
"Yes, yes and yes. God, Ace. You're a handful," he laughed. "Let's have a deal and make it two days instead? Come to my family dinner. Please. You'd save me from the wrath of my mother."
One thing I knew for sure: Ace was not ready for a meet-the-parents-session. What made him think that I could present myself well in front of his family when I couldn't for the love of bananas control my limbs?
I must have appeared rather perplexed because Blake went on to explain the importance of the issue. "It's my great-grandmother's hundredth birthday, so I've got relatives all over the world coming to see her. You can guess why my mother's been breathing down my neck. I'm the only one from her side that's not attached, by the way."
I held out my hands to slow him down.
"I get what you mean, Blake. Relax, I'll help you out but man, are you sure you want to bring a guy—let alone, a loser like me—along? Dude, like seriously it's no joke if you just uh, come out all of a sudden as bi."
Blake even went as far as to reassure me that no such thing was going to happen because almost everyone on his grandfather's side were either part of or strong supporters of the rainbow. "We'll fit right in. The only reason my mother's been arranging for me to meet females is because she assumed I was straight since I had a girlfriend back in high school."
"You had a girlfriend?" Was all I could keep track of.
"Yes, but that's obviously not the point, Ace." My superior sighed, watching as I sneezed twice in a row. He shrugged off his blazer and handed it to me. "Come on, let's get back to the office. Your lips are pale—you must be freezing." I accepted it reluctantly, walking alongside him as I tried to make sense of the past twenty minutes.
I felt the warmth of his fingertips at the back of my head and glanced up. "Take your time. I don't want you to feel rushed."
