hold me close and hold me fast

Thunder roared in deafening claps and rain pounded on the windows, creating a steady background noise for you and Ethan as you sat together on the floor playing video games.

"I died again," you whined, slumping as you continued to watch Ethan's character run through the course.

"I have one hit left. Gee whiz, I'm not gonna make it." Sure enough he died within 30 seconds of him saying that.

A bright flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder, caused you both to look at the window. There wasn't much to see as it was dark outside.

"Okay, twentieth times the charm. Am I right?" Ethan says, diverting your attention back to the game.

"I'm sure we've played this same level more than twenty times," you say, frantically smashing buttons. You continued playing the game many more times, each time failing a little less then before.

"You're almost there! Forget about saving me, just go to the end!" Ethan shouted as you made your character dodge all kinds of enemies.

Finally your character was about to reach the end when the screen-and the entire room-went black.

"What!?" You and Ethan screamed in unison.

"No! What the hell?!" Ethan yelled in frustration.

"I'm so angry. We were so close," you sighed, leaning your head on Ethan's shoulder which you somehow found in the dark.

"How long do you think the power will be out?" Ethan asked, tilting his head to rest on yours.

"I hope it's not too long."

The only light filling the room was from the occasional flash of lightning from the windows.

"The silence in the room is a little weird" you said, moving a little closer to Ethan.

"Are you afraid that something's going to... jumpscare you!" he jumped trying to scare you and it didn't work. You just gave him a dirty look, but of course he couldn't see.

"It's just that it's never been this quiet. Maybe it's you just being quiet. I didn't know that was possible."

"Very funny." Ethan rolls his eyes and you smile even though you can't see him.

"The rain sounds are calming enough that I might fall asleep," you yawned, but you flinched when a roll of thunder boomed.

"Go ahead and fall asleep. I'll just talk nonsense until you're asleep and then I'll wake you up when the storm is over." You could practically hear Ethan's cute smile.

You agreed and laid down on his lap. Ethan talked about what kind of shower curtain he was according to a buzzfeed quiz and it was enough to make you fall asleep.

Ethan fell asleep before the storm was over, so you were both asleep until the power came back and the loud music of the game started back up, scaring the ever-loving crap out of you both.
