Part 9
For the next week I received only one phone call from the Spider-Man. It had been the day after my first encounter with the Vulture guy. I had been doing my AP Physics Homework when my phone went off with my Ode to Joy ringtone. Apparently, the Spider-Man had found some sort of power device left behind from the Van yesterday. He wasn't really sure what it was but it could be a clue to where those guys were. Apparently, two of the arms dealers traced him to his school but he evaded them. And then planted a tracker on one of them that led to Maryland.
Which was perfect since on Monday I would be joining the academic decathlon team to Nationals that just so happened to be taking place in Washington D.C.. Thank goodness Peter and Ned made me join that team, it made it easy to cover up my trip. Instead if making up some random excuse about why I had to go down the eastern seaboard. Unfortunately, it didn't look like Peter would be joking us right now since he apparently wanted to stay in town for Tony Stark's internship thing even though the decathlon team was one of his favorite activities. I had noticed him doing odd things like that before. I didn't think he would be the type to skip class but he does for some reason. Frequently I find myself without a partner in AP Physics.
However, I did figure out where those guys had gotten their advanced weaponry from. Apparently some of them had been Chitauri and Ultron weapons that had been used by his foot soldiers. Many of them had been tampered with by the humans obviously. If we could trace down exactly where they were getting these weapons and destroy them. That would be great.
Currently I was actually with Ned as we were getting ready to board the bus that would take us to D.C. There were only about 10 people on the team so we would all get a seat to ourselves. Roughly 4 girls and 6 guys. I wasn't terribly close to any of them aside from being friend with Ned and Peter. But I knew most of their names and there were only one really annoying person. This bossy Indian guy with an overly large nose named Saran Gosht. The kind of guy who thought he was always right and could do no wrong. And Sadly, we were all wearing gross mustard yellow shirts that were our team uniforms. It would be like a 7 hour drive so we all made sure to bring studs to do. I had my new Tapestry book and phone for entertainment. As well as my green duffel bag that held normal clothes and essentials. But also my Nova outfit since it was very possible I would need it.
Ned was droning on and on about the new episode of the Walking Dead witch he was a literal fan girl over. He was describing this new character, Negan it great depth as I listened with mild interest. My TV shows personally were either The Strain or Dexter. You know something kind of weird and off since I always felt I could relate more to those characters personally. " Honestly, you should have seen it when Negan took out Abraham. Most badass one liner ever!" He claimed brightly as our coach, Mr. Fredericks did roll call. I shrugged " Wow honestly amazing" I replied sarcastically and of course he didn't pick up on it as he continued to tell me random facts and details about different characters that I had didn't even know about.
" Yea, seeing Rick like that was so....... Peter?" he don't need as I analysed my already chipping red nails. I rose a brow " So Peter?" I asked looking up as Peter hurriedly ran up to us with a look of intent in his eyes. What was he doing here? " Hey you guys still have room for one more?" Peter asked in his slightly high pitched nerd voice. He looked at us hopefully, his brown eyes flitting to both me and Ned. Liz, who was the a nice girl who was captain of the team looked rather surprised. But then Saran stepped up to put in his irrelevant opinion. " Oh so you think you can just step up and be welcomed back just like that after quitting?" Saran asked hoisting a red backpack over his shoulder.
Before anyone else could reply Mr.Fredericks stepped out of the Bus and gave Peter a bright smile. " Ah, Mr.Parker. Welcome back. Aran your back to being first alternate" Mr.Fredericks announced, settling the dispute. I smirked at Saran's baffled face, he had only been allowed to join the main team since Peter left. Now he was just an extra. " Sucks to suck" I muttered under my breath towards Satan and Ned chuckled oddly. I had beat out Saran on my first day being in the Decathlon group. It wasn't very hard.
Peter walked up to us with a small smile with his own pack for his shoulder and I looked at him curiously. " Change of heart huh?" I asked as he looked at me with innocent brown eyes. Peter shrugged " Mr.Stark claimed he wouldn't need me for the next few days. So I'm er good" Peter explained and then greeted Ned who looked happy to see him. I narrowed my eyes as I thought of how I had recently spoken to Stark. I guess it made sense since Stark was in India at the moment. But Normally Tony didn't just offer internships to random high school students. Then again Peter was the top of our class in AP Physics with me right behind him.
I decided against prying into his sudden actions as we boarded the bus. Ned and Peter both sat down in a seat that was across and one in front of where I sat. I but my duffle bag beside me to ensure no one would sit there. What? I liked my room. I proceeded to put my earbuds in before I noticed Peter and Ned talking about something hurriedly with their heads lowered. I arched a brow at this as they seemed to be talking of something intensely. I could have eavesdrops on the two nerds but decided to just but in my headphones as Chopin hit my ears.
The were probably talking discreetly about some nerdy junk or dorky topics. I would talk to them later on when I got bored of my book. However, as I began to read I found myself frequently checking my secondary phone for any call from the Spider-Man. I knew I could have called him if I needed to but he told me discreetly he would figure out where they were and then call me in. Mostly due to the fact that I wanted to keep it low. And only terrorize around Maryland if I really needed to.
The bus ride went as expected. It was like no and fairly dull as I went in between conversing with my two friends and reading or checking my phone. We arrived in Maryland at around 4pm and had to wait an hour in the lobby or a Marriott hotel for our room. I would be sharing my room with a rather interesting female named Michelle who like me, intended to keep to herself. We settled in easily into our rooms and thankfully had separate beds. I kept my eye on my second phone the entire night as I was prepared for a call. But it never came.
I wondered vaguely if the Spiderman just decided to go out on his own without me. It was entirely fishy as I woke up in the morning and we all went to the Dallas Convention center for the Academic Decathlon event. However, Peter had somehow disappeared. Again. It was seriously beginning to peeve me how he just came and went as he pleased. I liked Peter, he was a good guy, but where they heck was he going?
" Ned, where's Peter?" I asked blatantly as I walked with him into the Convention center. Ned had been rooming with Peter at the hotel so if anyone wouldn know it was him. Ned looked at me vaguely and I could see the slight worry in his eyes. " He er had to do something because.... he had to" Ned submitted oddly as he scratched the back of his neck.
I rose a brow at his stammered statement that didn't sound true at all. I normally don't like prying into people's lives. But I was getting ready to force Peter to spill where he keeps running off to. " Well that doesn't sound suspicious at all" I replied knowing Ned would only give me a straight answer if I threatened him with his life. Ned almost looked apologetic when he didn't reply as if he disliked keeping the information away from me.
I didn't talk to him much after that as we went through security and had to leave out phones and other technology in the security lane. I brought a backpack too with my suit at the bottom of it. I really didn't want to leave my secondary phone out there as I was a worried he would probably call me at the most inconvenient of times. The entire team got situated at our tables as there were only four other teams competing at Nationals. It went by quickly fr some but I could hardly focus on the contest as my thoughts kept wandering off to my phone.
However, I managed to get through the competition and surprisingly we ended up winning. Michelle got the final question correct and then we got a huge green and gold trophy. After taking pictures of with it and Saran insisting he should hold it the rest of the day. We got our stuff back and drove to the Washington monument. I checked my phone and was a little disappointed to see I had no calls. Would this trip really be just a waste? I mean I liked helping the decathlon team but my real reason for coming down here was for the Vulture guy.
We all went to the Washington Monument with brights smiles and happy faces. I too was happy as we paraded over to the Washington Monument. " See we didn't need Parker anyway" Saran claimed as he held the trophy tightly in his hands. " Oh yeah like you did anything to help us anyway" I replied sarcastically knowing for a fact that he missed the very first question we had been given during the decathlon.
I walked beside Ned who was even more bubbly than normal as he talked about the Decathlon. Then his phone started ringing and he picked it up. " Peter? Where the heck are you?" He asked and nearly hissed the last sentence. I looked up in interest as I heard Peter's name. " No I'm serious you're lucky we even won" Ned continued as We approached security line and once again and would to have all of our stuff run through the machines. " Look disappearing like that seriously want cool" Ned claimed and I stepped towards him and went to grab his phone.
" Is that Peter?" I asked and Ned gave me the phone. " Honestly Peter where the heck were you" I asked hurriedly as we waiting in line. " Ferris, is that you? Look I'm sorry but something important came up" Peter began with his nerdy voice that almost sounded like he was running or someplace windy. What could be that important?
" Tell me where the heck you have been" I ordered seriously as I put a hand on my hip. There was staticky sound and a grunt of effort " I had to do something but you have to tell Ned to get rid of his- No, first tell me where you disappeared to?" I interceded. Whatever Ned had to do could wait. " It's just the- Ma'am I need you to put that phone through the security check" The Security officer cut in and I put the phone down into a plastic container. Finishing the conversation. I don't really even know why I cared that much over where Peter was but it irritated me. I normally didn't really care about much of anyone in school.
We picked up the rest of our stuff at the exit of the security room and all walked onto a large elevator. With all 12 of us it was a bit packed but not unbearable. The elevator would take us to the top of the Monument where there was a room where we could see the rest of the world from. " The Washington Monument is 555 feet tall and was opened in 1888" The tour guide explained to us with a dreadfully boring attitude. I'm sure she said the exact same thing every single day so I could see why she was dull.
I almost felt like a little kid as we went up the fast elevator. But then my phone went of with a silent buzzer that vibrated against my leg. I reached down to grab it as all eyes were still on the tour guide who continued to give out random facts. The screen splayed a the words Spider-boy was calling and I internally groaned. Didn't I say this would happen inconveniently? I hoped to god there wasn't something serious about to happen.
I opened the call up and pressed it to my ear trying to keep it quiet. I was in the back of the elevator and most eyes were on the tour guide thankfully. " You had to call now?" I hissed quietly into the phone. " Hey wherever you are you need to get to the Washington Monument right now there's about to be a major catastrophe there" The Spider-Man explained and I nearly snorted as a shock went through me. How did he know that?
" Well wish granted. I'm alrea- Ahhh!" I yelled out as the Elevator suddenly shook violently and dropped my phone. All the occupants stumbled to the floor and the side of my head banged on the stabilizer hand rail in the elevator. Ned's backpack erupted into a blinding pink light that reminded me of the weapons those guys had. The light severed the top part of the elevator in half in a jagged golden red line. Why hell did Ned have a bomb thing in his bag?!
" Don't worry everyone the safety systems should keep us safe. We will just need to wait for the rescue crew" The Tour guide explained and the Elevator shuddered once more. I felt a spark of fear run through me as I realized I was in a broken elevator. I remember seeing a movie like this called Devil. I hated that movie. I breathed in deeply as knew I could maybe save all of us in a force bubble but that would be one big ass bubble and I could not really see outside this elevator. I silently pressed my hands to the back wall of the elevator and let magnetic energy pulse through my hands and engulf the elevator. The thing must have weigh at least a ton and with 12 people inside it was at least 3500. I had lifted heavy things before, like that watchtower that almost collapsed on Bucky and Steve at the airport, but only for a few seconds.
" We are all going to die" Michelle claimed with her eyes shut tightly in fear. Her hands clingy to the rails for dear life. I focused my mind on the elevator that was threatened to fall. Once this thing gained momentum it would be difficult to stop quickly. " We are all pretty safe in here" The tour guide insured and I scoffed. Safe my ass. I could feel this elevator shaking like no tomorrow as it threatened to fall to it's 555 foot drop that would kill us.
The elevator suddenly took a tumble downwards and we all yelled out in surprised but I maintained my focused on the energy around it. My arms were feeling weak as I continued to try and and hold up the Elevator. Thankfully to everyone around me it just looked like I was scared or something as I cowered in the corner with my hands against the wall. I closed my eyes and let my brain center onto the major task at hand.
I let any of the sounds and words being spoken to go silent as it no longer matter. I just had to keep the Elevator still and stop it from descended too quickly. My arms were beginning to feel like jelly as a numbness began to spread into my fingers. I wasn't sure how much longer I could hold us up as it had been nearly a whole minute and a half. If you want to imagine what it was like, then just think of what your max lift could be on bench press. And then add 50 more pounds to that and hold it over your head while standing up for a minute and a half.
Suddenly there was a thud above us as the top part of the elevator was ripped off. The face of a Fireman with a yellow helmet of his head appeared and a second one quickly followed. They quickly began to help people off the elevator but all the sudden movement caused the elevator to shake even more. The numbness was going all the way up my palms as I strained to keep the elevator up. I think the first person to get pulled out of the Elevator was Saran and while the small drop in weight helped. All the movement continued to dismantle my hold on the Elevator.
I gritted my teeth as beads of sweat ran down my face as the numbness was now going up my forearm. Leaving an almost painful tingly sensation. And the just like that. My arms gave out from the strain and the Elevator collapsed. The entire roofing of the elevator flew off and I fell to the floor at the sudden change in velocity. There were loud screams and yells. We were in freefall for only seconds.
Until a huge web suddenly caught the floor of the elevator, just barely missing my feet. I was almost breathless as I looked up to see the Spider-Man above us. For the first time I was actually genuinely happy to see this bloke. I mean honestly talk about convenient timing. A few more seconds and we would all have been red splatter.
" Don't worry I got you guys" The Spider-Man announced and Ned immediately burst into thankfully yells and whoops. My sight was quite fuzzy from the amount of energy I had realized. " Woah woah woah, big guy stop jumping around your digitalising the elevator" The Spider-Man insisted and Ned quickly stopped moving. There were only maybe 6 of us left including Michelle and Mr.Fredericks. The Spider-Man tugged on his line of web as he brought us all the way back up to where the Fireman had been.
I was still sitting in my corner and struggled to my feet as Ned was tugged out of the Elevator. " Alright let's move people come on" The Spider-Man's voice ordered as Mr. Fredericks was also taken off of the elevator. Soon enough it was only my tired being standing in the corner of the elevator. " C'mon Mss, we need to get you of of here" The Spider-Man told me and extended a hand to help me up and out of the broken Elevator. I reached out for his gloved hand when I sponstnusely felt weightless again. The webbing that had been holding onto the elaborate floor snapped and I screamed out in horror.
My entire being was falling and I could hardly muster anything to stop my fall. Only getting small little sparks as I went downwards. But something caught my right hand. Something specifically sticky that pulled me through the broken roof of the elevator that now tumbled downwards to an inevitable end. The web string pretty much was wrapped around my hand and arm that still felt strangely numb. I reached out with my left hand to try and grip it further. " I've got you, I've got you, it's ok" The Spiderman assured as he reeled me in.
He hoisted me up to the Firemen who took me quickly into the safety of solid ground. I turned to look back at the Spider Man who had pretty much saved my life and the rest of the decathlons lives. " Everyone ok?" Spiderman asked in a voice that sounded like he was trying to make himself sound more masculine. But ended up sounding like a feminine thug.
Did the Spider Man really just save me?
