Part 7
For the next month in a half I continued with my normal life. Thankfully I hadn't had any more nightmares nor did I get involved in anymore Cafe robberies. Even though that one a month ago had been quite exhilarating and I received a coupon from that Cafe. I hadn't seen the Spider-Man since then but heard plenty about him in school and conspiracy theories about him on the internet.
I had finished the project with Peter easily and I got to meet Peter's Aunt, May. A lovely brunette woman Who had immediately assumed I was Peter's girlfriend on arrival and made us slightly burnt cupcakes. She was practically his mom. I made a call to Tony to ask if he had told the Spider-Man who I was and he replied with a sincere no. The thought still baffled me throughout the month. I mean how on Earth did he know my name? Did I know the guy behind the mask somehow? The thought was mind boggling.
I would eat lunch with Peter and Ned who I guess I could consider as friends. Of course our friendships were only contained to within school. I hadn't invited Peter or Ned over, I mean why would I? I didn't play video games or have anything nerd worthy. I had noticed that Peter would sometimes ditch school for some reason but come back later on. He always claimed that it had something to do with a Stark Internship or that something had come up. But I didn't pry although I was becoming a tad curious over what odd excursions Peter Parker took. Was there some underground nerd layer I didn't know about?
The pair of them often tried to get me to join some sort of Academic decathlon question group. The kind where two people sit at a table and a judge asks questions. And then Whoever answers first gets the point or whatever. I was a tad resilient with it but they managed to get me to finally come to one of the meets. I might even be joining them for Nationals in Washington D.C.. Speaking of my nerdy friends or whatever you could call those two. They were at some party that was an open invite. A popular Chick named Liz was throwing it and Ned had the hugest crush in her. Of course he had no chance but I tried to be nice and tell him he had a very small chance with her.
I received little to no communication with the other Avengers. Of course people like Tony Stark and Rhodes were always kept on the public eye. I wasn't entirely sure where Steve and Bucky were. There had been sightings of them in Orlando Florida on the News but I wasn't sure of how accurate a news station could be. If they needed me they knew my number. There had been plenty of stories about the spider man all the time. He was always in the tabloids and making the front page. It was all " Spider Man Stops Bank Robbery" or "Spiderman Webs Up Getaway Cars". Don't get me wrong it was good and the crime percentages had been going down in fear of the Spider man.
However, there were some other interesting things making the headlines. The other day I watched something on the News about some sort of new Villains that had gone after an main ATM. That wasn't even the the most interesting part. They weren't supers (Enhanced beings) supposedly, but had incredibly advanced weaponry. Specifically, a laser induced gun that severed a building in half and shattered nearby stores. And ATM robbery isn't that big of a deal, but buildings being cut up like vegetables is. That weaponry needed to be confiscated lest it fall into the wrong hands. The Spider-Man had apparently been at the scene however was unable to take down the. Thus, that meant the thief or thiefs were still out there.
The Nova hadn't been seen in months and I was beginning to think I would have to get out there soon. To try and figure out where and who these robbers were. And what their motive was. My first thoughts ran to calling Tony since he was the nearest Avenger. But I'm pretty sure he would shut me down and say that I should let the authorities deal with it. But how could police men and the FBI defend against lasers that would cut their bodies in two. At least I could sort of defend myself. Maybe not stop the blast entirely but at least deflect it.
I sat in my apartment contemplating one what to do. My hero side ended up winning as I began suiting up in my outfit. The familiar creases and fabric made me feel almost at home. I put in an ear piece that was logged into a police scanner that gave a broadcast over what different reports and crimes were happening in Queens. Thus far I hadn't heard anything and I made my way to the roof in order to get a better signal. Nothing distinctly sounded like the particulate thieves I was looking for.
I began to hop from rooftop to rooftop with amplified jumps. I hadn't used my mutation very often in the past few months and it felt good to feel that magnetic energy back in my hands. After twenty minutes I sighed as I stopped on the very edge of a series of buildings. Beside Those buildings was a large park with Red Maples and paved walking ways. Of course it was empty since it was like midnight. I had no leads on these guys and no real idea where to start. They might try hitting an ATM again but there were hundreds of those in New York. Maybe this hadn't been such a good idea I thought.
Suddenly, I heard a large boom behind me and turned to see a strange blue explosion that puffed up. But then it receded as if it had just been a grenade. There was a second blue explosion and I scoffed. That may not have been who I was looking for but it looked pretty serious. Might as well start there I thought as I kept down from the building and cushioned my landing with a shield cradle.
I began trekking through the park with silent and quick footsteps. It took maybe two minutes before I came across the scene but stayed hidden in the shadows. From what I could see, there were three men standing together around two vans. One of them was shooting a strange gun that looked like a futuristic minigun that was glowing bright blue. I ran up onto a nearby walking bridge to get a better look. Now I could Hear what they were saying.
A white guy with a beanie on looked to one of the other men. " See this one is crafted straight from an Ultron arm in Sokovia" The Beanie man claimed. He aimed at a run down car and took a shot at it. It erupted into blue sparks as bright blue explosion went into the air with a rippling effect. I could almost feel the energy coming off of it. Beanie dude turned to the second man who was black guy with poofy hair. " You try?" He insisted. This must have been some kind of arms deal with seriously advanced weaponry.
The poofy hair guy just glanced at the gun and then back up at Beanie dude. " Man, I was looking for something a little more low key. Why are you trying to upsell me man?" Potty hair guy asked and Beanie dude shrugged as he walked to the white van that's back doors were open. " Low key huh?" Beanie asked as he rummaged through what looked to be several weapons back there.
I needed to stop this and turned to get off the bridge and down there to those guys. I could take them, I would have to trap them in a force bubble away from the guns and then dispatch each of them one at time. I walked to the back ledge and then suddenly stopped right in my tracks as my eyes went wide behind my goggles.
I was looking right into the face mask of Spider-Man.
For a second I was entirely stunned at seeing the Spider-Man again. I mean he had snuck up on my so easily. I could guess he was just as surprised even if I couldn't see him behind his mask. I quickly recovered from the initial shock as I remembered that there was an advanced arms deal just twenty yards away that needed to be stopped. " What are you doing here?" I half whisper half hissed glaring at the Spider-Man.
The Spider-Man tilted his head from his crouched position. " This is my city, what are you doing here?" he asked quietly with his familiar nerdy voice. I rolled my eyes. His City? " I'm trying to stop those idiots down there. So if you don't mind, I can handle it" I whispered and began to seriously wish that he would go away. I recalled very vividly how he bashed into me from swinging in his spider webs back at the Airport battle.
" No way! I've got this too!" he whispered loudly and rolled my eyes. Technically we were still on the same team so it made sense to put our little feud behind us for now. Especially With what was going on below. " Fine you can help" I replied and Spider-Man scoffed softly so that we wouldn't alert the three men nearby of our position. " Oh thanks for your permission" He said sarcastically back and crawled down wards to where he was hanging underneath the bridge. I groaned inwardly as I slunk back to underneath the bridge and still kept to the coverage of the darkness. The entire scene was really only illuminated by a single street lamp that flickered every now and then.
I continued to watch the scene in front of me with spider man hanging from a web just five yards away. The Beanie guy was still rummaging threw the van " Maybe a Sonic blaster.... Black hole grenades...." Beanie guy droned on but The poofy hair guy didn't seem interested in that stuff. The this man who was a broad, burly looking dude stepped up to the Poofy hair man who seemed to be the buyer. " Look man, times are changing, we are the only ones selling this stuff. It's above the black market" The third, broad man claimed but the Poofy hair guy still seemed a little uninterested.
" Like I said, I'm looking for something slick. Not something that shoot a dude back in time or vaporized them" Poofy hair guy replied and the broad dude nodded in understanding. " This must be where the ATM robbers got their weapons" Spider Man whispered out loud almost to himself. I rose a brow but his logic made sense. But of course I responded with typical sarcasm " Yeah the ATM thieves you let get away" I replied sardonically.
The spider man turned to me with provoke an annoyed look on his face if I could actually see it. " Oh and where were you that night?" Spider Man asked as he matched my wit. I huffed "Excuse me if I'm an actual Avenger with real problems to deal with" I replied mockingly. Although, it was sort of a lie because I hadn't had much to do with any of the Avengers since the airport battle. But he had a point, I hadn't been there at the ATM robbery either way.
Spiderman didn't reply as we silently decided to stop our bickering. There were bigger fish to fry at the moment. The Beanie guy pulled out a new gun that looked like a thick RPG kind of thing with a End piece that glowed iridescent blue. " Oh hey? What bout this one? It's a a--" Beanie guy began but stopped when suddenly a ringtone went off beside me. An odd yodeling sound was coming from Spider-Man as he pulled out his phone. Couldn't he have at least put it on silent?
" I hate you" I stated blandly staring up at the sky as if waiting for lightning to strike. Our cover was pretty much blown as the three guys looked over to our general area in confusion. The poofy hair guy whipped out a gun and pointed it at the thick guy. " You set me up?" He asked harshly and cocked his gun. Spider-Man lept down from his vantage point " If you're going to shoot at someone shoot at me!" He suggested. I almost cringed at his words. So much for a sneak attack.
" That's alright with me" Poofy man shrugged and turned the gun onto Spider-Man. But just as soon as he did Spider-Man shoot a line of web at the gun and ripped it from his hands. I put up a force shield around me and ran out beside him when the Beanie dude let out a large grin. " Holy shit it's the Nova!" The thick guy exclaimed but the Beanie dude hit a switch on the gun he was holding and my eyes widened. I went to raise a force shield around the Spider-Man but the gun went off with a sudden iridescent bang. The force of it knocked me off my feet and cracked my force bubble in half. I managed to partially shield the Spiderman from the blast but he too rocketed backwards.
I groaned in pain as I sat back up and through hazy vision could see the three men escaping into their vans. My head felt heavy and a headache was sure to come as I massaged the base of it. Unlike Spider-Man, I did not have super human endurance. Spider-Man stood back up just as the van turned on and they began driving away. "What the heck was that?" Spider Man asked and I stood back up groggily. Normally I could have just trapped the van in a force bubble and end of story. But I was struggling to regain my bearings as I shook off the pain from the impact of the blast. Spider-Man shot out a web at the Van and gained a hold of the rear end.
I couldn't fly, but I could find a way to keep up. I focused on a nearby pot hole cover allowing the magnetic energy to envelop it. And then with more steady hands I wrenched it from the ground and hopped on. I stumbled a little but snapped out of it as I charged after Spider-Man and the Van. I wasn't that far behind as I followed the van that now took fire at the Spider-Man who was dragging behind on a string of web while skidding on the concrete road. But not just any gun of course. This one let out a blast that was pale pink and was easy to see in the dark of night. There nobody around as they continued to fire at the Spider-Man who struggled to hold on. The doors of the van had long since come off and I guided my pothole cover to accelerate. I was pretty much hoverboarding right now.
A sudden hazy pink blast came my way and I had to veer to the right to evade it. After nearly sideswiping a tree I got back on track as Spider-Man was still dragging behind the van and yelling out random inaudible things. I took a quick breath as I created a force bubble on the road and the van drove right on to it. But instead of going over it the van spun around and nearly tipped over. Yells of surprise could be heard from the van as the occupants spun around.
Several more pink blasts came as well as the sound of normal gunshots as the Spider-Man leapt onto the roof of the Van. I approached the van but was careful of the powerful pink blasts that were going off randomly by some trigger happy guy. I thought about raising a shield against the The Spider-Man was about to drag one of the van occupants out of the car when a huge black figure came out of no where. It had large black, mechanical wings and illuminated green eyes. I could hardly make out much more than that as it picked up the Spider-Man like a hawk does to a Squirrel.
Shoot! " Spider- man!" I yelled out as That Hawk or Vulture thing just took the Spider-Man and was taking him way up in the air. I only had a few seconds to decide. Would I take in the people in the van or save the Spider-Man. The Vulture thing was dragging him way up and from that height it would kill him if he dropped. I glanced back at the van before I made the pothole soar into the air and ensured my feet were pretty much strapped to the thing with a magnetic force. It would do no good if I fell while trying to save the Spider-Man.
