fifty-one

[HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY]

The airport was crowded; flashing lights caused me to grip onto Harry’s arm, keeping my sights down as I usually did. The sky was dark, and the air was cold on my neck. Harry talked to the paparazzi on our way through; answering most of the questions he was getting asked.

I raised my head once we entered the airport, pulling the suitcase behind me. We were early for our flight, so we went and took a seat as we waited. My nerves were all over the place, and my breathing was uneven at the thought of the flight.

I sat beside Harry, crossing my legs beneath me.

“What do you think it’s like over there?” I asked as I rested my chin in my hands. I didn’t really know what I was to expect, I was expecting the worst, but hoping for something bearable. I knew that if conditions were beyond repair, it would pain me to leave.

“Where we’re going isn’t too nice.” He shook his head.

I sighed as I looked down again.

“All the money we’re raising is going to make it better, at least a little more livable.”

“You’re right.” I nodded.

“I know.” He agreed.

The 8 hour plane ride had to be the worst time for me. I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t really know what I wanted to expect, what I was meant to think. We were told the flight was the only time we were going to be able to sleep, as right when we landed we would go right to the camps and hospitals. Cameras would be following us as we promoted the comic relief; I knew it was going to be a very long first day.

I leaned against the window as I slept, waking up every so often to check if we had landed. When we did land, Harry and I were quick to strip off our sweaters, putting on one of our t-shirts.

This was happening, this was really happening.

I looked out the window again, it looked nice.

“We’ve landed in a city; someone is going to take us to where we’re meant to be.” Harry informed me.

I nodded as I looked at him, smiling as he pouted at me. In five minutes it was announced that we were allowed to get off the plane, and Harry instantly took my hand in his. As we stepped off, we were lead to our bags, and taken into a small car along with the camera crew and directors. I watched as the car drove how as soon as we exited the city the scenery became more and more empty, large buildings and nice homes were replaced with small hospitals and very small homes. Small wells were placed throughout the village; people flocked to small stands lining the street.

In about an hour the car stopped, and the director told Harry he would be getting off there.

“And what about her?” He asked as he motioned his hands towards me, his eyebrows furrowed to the middle creating a harsh line on his forehead.

“She will be there with you soon, but first she is going to a deaf camp.”

Harry looked over at me, silently looking for my approval. I nodded my head and lightly smiled at him. He shook his head before leaning in and kissing me quickly.

He turned and pushed the door open, Camera men followed behind him before they slammed the door shut.

The car immediately drove off, causing me to turn my body to watch Harry walk into the small hospital, sighing once he was out of sight, and I was completely alone.

The director explained to me what I was going to do. He said that the camp I was going to would be providing hearing aids to the village’s deaf community and that I would be assisting them in doing so. He assured me that right as I got there, people would explain to me what I was doing, and introduce me to everyone. I felt more at ease with the situation.

It was proven that Harry’s location wasn’t far from mine, and I was quickly out of the car with my crew. The director came with me, leading me to the main station. The surroundings weren’t as bad as I had expected, but that was only because of what this area was. It was a deaf school.

Tents were set up to cover working stations from the sun. Children and some adults sat underneath one, watching me as I was lead into a building to be acquainted with the staff.

“This is Amy Lee.” The director said as he led me to the group of people.

They smiled at me as they offered their hands for me to shake.

“It’s a pleasure.” One of the women said as she shook my hand.

I took a step back after I finished with everyone, waiting for some direction.

“So what we’re doing here today is hearing aid placements.” One of the women explained, her accent was thick. “What we’ll be doing is setting them up, and attaching them to the patient. We want you to offer guidance in noises.”

I gave her a confused look, causing a small laugh to escape her lips.

“You’ll be encouraging sounds and talking to them, once they respond we know the aid had been hooked up right.”

“Sounds good.” I smiled.

“Wonderful!” She exclaimed as she motioned me to follow her.

She was quick to get me started, taking me to a client who was already in progress. I waved to the small boy who sat up on a cushioned table. He smiled and waved back at me as two men attached aids to his ears.

“Amy.”

I looked at the director, nodding.

“If you’re not getting enough power, I’m going to bring you stronger aids right away.-”

“Okay.”

“And we’re going to go up a level and we’re going to try again, until we get it just right.”

“Okay.” I repeated as I gave him a warm smile.

He walked behind me, patting my back before he made his way to the main table.

I went to the boy I was directed to, introducing myself to the two men, before I bent down to greet the boy.

“What we are doing now it turning it on, so you can start talking to him to find some response.”

I nodded and sat on the stool across from him. I didn’t know what to say to the boy, so I started off simply.

“Hi.” I waved.

He waved back, without a sign of sound being heard.

“It should be on.” One of the men said.

The boy instantly looked over at him, smiling.

“Did you hear that?” I cheerfully asked.

He looked back over at me, smiling again.

“Do repeats.” The man ordered.

“Repeats?”

“Make a noise and he will answer the same.”

I nodded before redirecting myself to the boy.

“La la la”

His faint voice came out, repeating me.

“Good!” I said as I rubbed his back. “Very good.”

He looked up at me and smiled, you could see the gratitude in his eyes.

And that is when I remembered what made me come here, for a reaction like that.

I spent two hours at the camp, being videotaped and interviewed to promote the situation, and getting nearly 50 children done as we worked quickly. I was once again put into the car, and now I was excited to go and see Harry again. We drove for a few minutes to get to the hospital again.

This wasn’t like the hospitals back in the UK; this was a very small hospital, with very little supplies. I was let off the car, and told Harry would be on the top floor. The directors kept in tight contact, knowing exactly where we each were at any given time. He told me that Harry would be waiting for me by the stairs up. I nodded and waved as I made my way inside.

It was oddly quiet, as many people gathered in the rooms and halls, not a person was speaking. I looked down as I made my way up the three floods of stairs, finding Harry on the third floor as promised.

His back was turned to me, and he was facing a wall.

As I reached the last step he turned to me, my hand rose to my chest as I took in Harry’s state. His eyes were blood shot, and his lips were slightly swollen.

“Harry.” I softly spoke as I walked towards him.

“Amy.”

My arms opened to take him in my arms. He looked down before he came into my arms. He lightly cried as he buried his head into my neck, holding me tightly. My hand came up to his hair, rubbing his head as I hushed his suppressed cries. My hands went to his back, lightly rubbing up and down his spine. I pushed him off to get a better look at him. He stood in front of me, looking at me before the bottom of his shirt was brought up to soak his tears.

“Don’t cry.” I hushed as I held his face in my hands. “Don’t cry, Harry.”

“It’s horrible.” He choked.

“I know it is.” I nodded. “But you’re helping, we’re helping them.”

Harry released a breath as he redirected his eyes to the ground, another tear slipping from his eye. My hand rose to wipe it off his cheek, placing my hand on his chin to make him look at me.

“It’s okay.”

“I don’t want you to go in there.” He shook his head.

“I need to go in there, Harry.” I replied. “You need to go back with me.”

“I need a minute.” He gripped my wrist.

“When we get home you’re going to feel so good about yourself, people are going to be so proud of you, I’m already proud of you for going in there and feeling their pain.” I rubbed over his knuckles. “But for now we need to go back, I’ll be right there with you.”

Harry sniffled and nodded again. He looked into the room filled with children and then back at me, taking his hand to the small of my back and leading me inside.

I tried to compose myself as I entered the eerily quiet room; children lay in the beds placed in rows. One of the nurses came to us, holding her hand out to me as she smiled.

“You must be Miss Amy.”

I nodded my head, “How are you?”

“I’m very well.” She nodded at me. “I’ll be taking you to a child, and there I will tell you what is wrong with them and the causes, off of the information. Now, if it all becomes too much you are more than welcome to excuse yourself, I know it can be very hard to see.”

“Thank you.” I nodded.

“Come with me.”

Harry and I held hands as we followed behind her, she led us into another room where she stopped at a small bed. Alongside was what I was assuming to be the mother of the baby, looking down into her lap as she picked at the hem of her dress.

“Here this baby is not even a year old.” She began.

I bit the inside of my cheek as I glanced down at the baby.

“He has a fever, and we aren’t sure what has caused it, but he is very sick.”

I nodded my head as I took in a breath, holding it in as I went to the bench where the mother was sitting. My first instinct was to comfort her as I would Harry, only her situation was much more complex than Harry or I’s stations. She was basically watching her child suffer before her eyes, not being able to help the slightest.

My hand went to her shoulder, lightly squeezing as I offered her a sympathetic look. She forced a small smile at me before he directed her sight back to her baby. He was awake, wrapped in a blanket as he looked back at her. Harry took a seat beside me, greeting the mother as I had.

She called the nurse over, whispering to her before looking over at me.

“She says if you would like, you can hold her son.”

I nodded lightly, looking over at the mother again and smiling at her.

The nurse took the small child into her arms, walking to me before placing the baby in my arms. I held the baby safely to my body, cradling the bottom as my other hand went to the side of the blanket. The baby was awfully thin; you could just tell how sick he really was. I shook my head as I shut my eyes to keep my tears inside. Harry placed his hand on my back and I opened my eyes again.

“How long has he been this way?” I asked the nurse.

“Almost a month.”

I drew in a breath, “Will he be okay?”

“Well um, -“

“Be honest with me.”

“Chances are slim.” She shook her head.

That’s when it all hit me.

I couldn’t help but think of Alyssa in this situation. I held a sick baby in my arms, and all I could do was worry for her child. I knew that they had the money to help their child, that we had all the resources to do so. I couldn’t help but put myself in the situation of the mother, but I knew I couldn’t possibly imagine how she felt.

“It’s alright.” Harry whispered.

I shook my head as I handed the baby off to his mother. I pushed the hair around my face behind my ears, looking back down.

We sat there with the mother for a while longer, speaking to her through the nurse. Soon after the directors had taken into consideration that we should leave, and get into our hotel in the city so we could sleep.

I completely understood why Harry was so emotional towards the situation, and I soon began to cry again. Harry and I stepped out of the room, I cupped my face once the door shut, hiding my emotions from Harry. He wrapped his arms around me, keeping my hands pressed to my face.

“I know.” He spoke. “We’re leaving now, it’s alright.”

I pulled away, wiping my tears as I looked up at Harry.

“We’re helping them.” He repeated to me.

I smiled and nodded up at him, taking in a breath to compose myself from my shaky breaths.

As emotional as I was getting, I knew extremely well how much good I was doing for these people. And as well as I knew their living situation, and their individual struggles; I found it in me to keep a strong face, I knew that I wasn’t going to leave here until I did something great for them, I was going to try and save them.
