Fourteen ╱ Risk and Reward
"You look like shit." Hunter laughs, and I can only hope he's joking.
I wore sunglasses as if I was hungover, but really, I was just trying to hide the fact that I only got a few hours of sleep last night and it was on the motel room floor at that.
Hunter makes his hand into a fist and rubs the top of my already messy-haired head. I quickly move away from him, my lips morphing into what I hope is visible distaste. I groan, but don't say anything.
I think I'm too tired or maybe too confused to give him the time of day.
He opens the door to the lobby for me and when I step through, I'm immediately left with the buzzing of flies swarming the dim-lit light fixture above the receptionist's desk.
The dark-haired woman doesn't even look at me once my eyes land on her. But regardless, Hunter says that we're ready to check out.
She doesn't say anything still, but taps the kiosk on her desk vigorously until requesting for the room key. While Hunter fishes into his pocket for both his and mine.
There's the rumbling sound of an engine only roaring louder and louder the more time passes -- and when I look out the dirtied windows, I can feel anger rising within me.
In the red truck, comes Tyler with Kate in the front seat.
I don't hesitate. I'm furious. "I'll go get our bags."
I tell Hunter as I quickly rush out of there, my head low and my vision darkened by the sunglasses shielding my eyes and the sheer anger making me see red.
I push past the creaky, rusted door but my body clashes wth another.
Given the Tecovas on the man's shoes and the signature belt he's wearing, it doesn't take me long to piece together that, thanks to my luck, Tyler is right in front of me.
Yet still, I push past him, every bone in my body fueled by anger while I try to ignore the way I watch his smile fade when I try to walk away.
But he won't let me get off so easy.
I blink and his hands are around the small of my arms, holding me in place -- grabbing my attention.
With my jaw clenched, I pull my arms away harshly without a second thought. "Get off of me."
"Why are you so angry?"
I don't understand how he can be so clueless.
"Dallas." I can hear the desparity in the cracking of his voice.
Still, I don't stop walking.
"Dallas!" He corners me into the railing of the staircase, forcing me to face his vulnerably confused state.
Working my jaw back and forth, I try to control my emotions, but God, it's so fucking hard because I'm furious yet it's so very difficult to stay that way when he's looking down at me like this. "You know, I waited for you last night."
He falters, eyes going soft. "Why?"
Isn't it obvious? I want to say but don't.
But goddammit, he sees it written all over my face.
"Oh." He says.
"I waited," I'm angry and sad and really fucking confused. My face shows it -- contorting it into a mix of my complicated emotions. "like a goddamn dog. While you were off with her!"
My voice cracks when I say the three-letter-word and I didn't know I could be so jealous. Or why.
"Dal," he blows out a breath, head tilting to the side ever so slightly as he looks at me with such conflict. "I didn't--"
Hesitaton washes over me. Regret. "I know, and it's fine--"
"It's not fine." He shakes his head over and over, repeatedly like he understands me perfectly.
My jaw works back and forth, looking up at him.
I wish things were different. I wish I didn't want to collapse on this pavement just at the sight of the unraveling behind his eyes. But still, I swallow as I begin to go back up the staircase. "I have to go."
"Dallas." His voice is so low, so quiet, almost like a whisper. His eyes flicker between the unshed tear in my eye and my lips, his thoughts clear in his gaze.
"What?"
He doesn't move for a long moment, just... thinks. I know he's concentrating on the thought taking up his brain because I watch the tick in his jaw and the furrow between his brows.
"What?"
He kisses me. And it says more than words could ever say.
BLAKELY SPEAKS !
