Based on the song by Ed Sheeran:
My thoughts:
The challenge for the contest, was to take a favourite song and turn it into a cover, interpreting the song as you do so.
So for my cover, I picked the song 'Autumn Leaves' performed by Ed Sheeran.
It's a rather melancholic and calm song, with just a guitar, piano and the singer's voice carried over the simple tune in the background.
I wanted to mirror that simplicity in my cover. That's why I chose to make more of a simple cover, using very few elements, no fancy effects and a clean white font that stands out against the background just like Ed's voice stands out against the muted instruments.
The meaning of the song's lyrics isn't to hard to guess: it's about a person having lost someone, either because of a break up or death.
Hearing the title immediately brings images of golden hued treetops to mind, so I used a photo of an autumn forest, laden with orange leaves as a background for my cover. I darkened it a little, especially the corners, to give it more depth and to match the serious note of the music.
The line 'float down, like autumn leaves' is mirrored in the leaves strewn across the page. In the song it almost sounds like as if those are representing the days that pass slowly without the addressed person ('another day, another life, passes by')
The model on the cover doesn't look straight into the camera, but instead has her eyes turned down and her lips aren't pulled up in a smile but rather set in a straight line, which gives her an overall pensive expression, just like the song is more of a sorrowful one.
Her head is bent back over her shoulder and you could say that she's looking back, maybe into the past, reminiscent of the time shared with the lost loved one (lyric: 'and yesterday you were here with me')
She could also be watching the leaves that are floating around her, watching them fall to the ground, days pass by and the seasons change, while she's still staying in the same spot.
She's wrapped up in a blanket or something which fits the autumn theme and her hair looks like it's ruffled by the same wind that sends the leaves to the ground.
In the song, the singer addresses a person that used to be there, but is 'miles away' now. Some parts reminded me a little of a letter, especially with the continued 'you' throughout the song.
That is why I was looking for a slightly scribbly font for the title, something that would look a little bit like handwriting. I tried one or two calligraphy fonts, but they were too fine and didn't stand out against the background enough, so I chose this kind of brush fond in the end, which is bold enough on the one side, but not too fancy, just like the composition of the song.
