Chapter 2

The bitter cold was brutal without a proper coat. Even with Kai's magic pushing away the blowing winds, it didn't help very much because the temperature was extremely low. He can't change temperature just prevent wind from blowing on us. There was nothing around to light a fire with, unless you find some garbage in the alley useful. I'm better off not experimenting anyway, it would draw too much attention.

The burns on my arms still hurt, and while the throbbing has gone dull, it still stings pretty bad. Yuhan told me there's Healers all over this town, but so far we haven't come across any. I feel bad making Yuhan and Kai worry like this. Its a horrible feeling knowing there's nothing you can do. Sadly, there's no magic that will help me other than a Healer, and if that doesn't work he only other choice is to heal it the natural way and pray there's no infection. I'll still have to keep going if injured like this, but I'm stronger now and I know I can do it. Either outcome is alright with me.

"You're awake? How long have you been up for?" Kai kneeled down beside me and gently touched my shoulder. His concern has grown for me, along with our bond. Bad situations have a way of opening yourself up to others, just like it opened Kai up to me little by little. Our relationship wasn't perfect, he is still still stubborn as always, but he's shown a lot of growth over this journey.

"Not too long. I've just been doing some thinking, that's all."

He nodded and sat beside me, wrapping his arm over my shoulder. I could smell the faint aroma of sweat, but it didn't bother me since I probably smelled worse than him. The nook of his arm was warm and safe. I take every moment of safety and warmth that I can get because those moments in life are fleeting.

"How are the burns?"

"They still sting, but they're better than yesterday."

He looked down at the ground, "well that's good." An awkward silence slowly wedged itself between us.
I felt my eyes drifting back off to sleep.

"How's your leg?" My eyes drifted down to the gash on Kai's leg, and the stain that was caused earlier from the initial bleeding

"Healing, but I'm not going to get around smoothly without a little magic."

I nodded. Kai got hurt too. He's walking around, but I know he's pushing back his pain. We really need this Healer if we are going to be able to get the castle back.

"I want you to rest, but just so you know Yuhan got some information about one of the Healer's location. He's out following the lead."

I did my best to give a little nod, and slowly drifted off back to sleep. For that one moment I felt safe, but that moment felt like a lifetime.
