Chapter 13
I stare up at the stars, being swallowed by the dark sky. The dark slowly consuming the radiance. Thats how I feel. Like this dark cloud is creeping up behind me, consuming me.
We've been walking all day to the Daine of Rube. It's a stunning city, filled with those who are very religious. It's a city for people who seek the guidance from a divine being, the celestial spirit.
I'm not very religious. When I was young, my mother told me that the celestial spirit does not communicate with those here on earth, but if you stay a kind and gracious human being, the she will give you his grace. This became my motivation. Although, I view myself agnostic because I don't know what I believe in, I believe in being a good person.
Even though my mother and I weren't all that close, I still miss her. She was very wise bad strong, but she never enjoyed her luxuries. So stiff and unemotional. I still respect her, and love her though.
I rolled onto my side, tucking the blanket under my chin. But, I'm Scarlett now, not Scarletta. Who is Scarlett. She's brave and heroic, gifted with a weapon. She does not miss a step and trains like a dog. I want to truly become her.
I flipped to my other side to check Kai was asleep. Once I was convinced he was not awake, I quietly removed my blanket and rose to my feet. I dashed for my sabre, and headed into the wood.
I stared at my target. Loosened my stance. Focused. Next thing I knew, I made two swift swipes through the bark of the tree. The markings were clean, like how Kai had demonstrated. I improved a lot.
I mentally gave myself a pat on the back, then continued working. Slashing left and right at the trees, pretending to be surrounded by enemies. I moved much more fluent, like a steady current.
Suddenly, I heard a crunch of a branch. I jumped back and held my weapon tighter. Nerves ran up and down my spine.
But, the moments passed, and nothing else happened. I calmed myself down and headed back to Kai, where it was safe...
I heard rustling from the bush beside me. I dodged out of the way, just in time before a uniformed man nearly pounced on me. I push myself off my stomach and tried to stand. Suddenly, the man clasped my ankle and began dragging along the dirt.
I screamed bloody murder, hoping Kai would hear, but it was cut off by hand on my mouth. I was yanked to my feet, Struggling to break free. My arms were pinned behind me, and there was a hand on my mouth, pulling my head back.
I was crying hysterically, praying for Kai, needing him....but he didn't make it in time.
