Chapter 6

The following Monday morning, Miranda brings me a cup of fat-free frozen custard when she comes back from picking up Andrea's lunch. "I'm sorry Millie." I accept the icy cold treat but my hackles rise. "What did you do now Miranda? I already forgave you for telling Carter about my script..."

She sits down and opens her browser window to her favorite gossip site. I lean over her shoulder and read the headline.  Fin Covington Conquers Heartbreak! Miranda scrolls down and clicks through the album. There are multiple pictures of Fin with a 'mystery' platinum blonde.

I turn away from the screen and sit at my desk to enjoy my custard, while Miranda narrates each photograph to the back of my head. "They look very comfortable with each other lying on the grass in Central Park. Here's another cutesy shot where his arm is wrapped around her shoulder. They're laughing in this one. It looks like they made their way all across the city this past weekend. But I don't see any kissing shots other than one on the cheek..."

"Seriously Miranda, I have nothing but a professional relationship with the man. That's good for him if he found someone to spend his summer with." I lick the plastic spoon and the phone rings.

"Eric Goff's office."

"Holden Gregory is in the lobby Millie."

"You can send him back."

A minute later Holden rounds the corner. He spreads his arms wide at Miranda and me. "Ladies! I come bearing glad tidings!" I stand and clap my hands together. "Ovation is taking the hold off because they want to book you!"

Holden grips me in a hug that lifts me from the ground. "Eric said you'd be getting an email at any minute with their formal offer to make me the voice of the channel along with a proposed contract." This is not news to me but I let Holden tell me anyway because I know he's excited. When he puts me back down, I squeeze his shoulders. "That's great Holden! Congrats!"

Miranda calls out from her desk. "Ditto Holden!" She's still clicking through photos of Fin. Holden looks over at her. "Ugh! That guy again! He's everywhere this summer! Endgame, Cymbeline, and I just read in Variety this morning that he's starting his own production company. Infinite Cove... or something like that."

I sit back in my chair. "Well now at least I know why the other agents wanted to swarm in on Eric's meeting. They must have heard the buzz about Fin's company."

Miranda's eyes are twinkling and I know that look of hers means she going to stir things up. Then she points her gel manicured finger at me. "He's been all over Millie this summer too. She's handling him since she helped Eric get Covington for a History Channel booking. He even gave her one ticket to Endgame."

Holden crosses his arms and sits on the edge of Miranda's desk. "Is that so? Don't tell me this is true and break my heart Millie! I invite you out all of the time and you always say no..."

I open my email to find the proposal from Ovation and send it to the printer. Then look over at the two of them. "First, talking to the guy twice in my life does not count as him being all over me. Second, of course I'm going to handle him, as you put it Miranda... he's a client and working with him is my job. Third, I was invited to a play, not on a date. Need I remind you that I've been to many of your performances Holden."

I jab my finger into his chest with my last sentence, then hustle past him to grab the papers from the department printer. I sit back down to create a file folder for the contract so I can put it on Eric's desk. Holden comes behind me and leans over my shoulder as I skim the document quickly. He pretends to look at it too but then whispers near my ear. "Come out for a celebratory drink with me tonight."

I turn myself slowly around. Holden cringes at my squeaking chair. I'm nose to nose with him. "Be flattered I always say no. If I found you hideous, and not tempting in the least, I would say yes." He laughs and stands up. "Point taken." His crotch is now in my face so I rotate back around. "Eric will read this over later and call you tomorrow about it. Bye Holden."

"Bye ladies." He disappears back down the hallway.

A new email pings on my screen and I see it is the finalized recording schedule for Fin. My stomach somersaults when I realize that I need to call him today.
