Chapter 27
"This is some kind of joke, right?" Jane smiles at me as she sits on our couch.
I pull the marriage license paperwork out of my bag and hand it to her.
She stares at it for a minute and then abruptly stands up. "Holy shit! You're not kidding!"
I feel myself blush. "Will you be my maid of honor on Friday night when we get married?"
Jane continues to mutely stare at the paperwork in her hand. I'm not even sure that she heard the question I just asked.
When she finally speaks her voice rises to a shrill level. "I mean... You've obviously gone completely insane!"
This isn't the reaction I was expecting from my best friend. I was expecting a hug and congratulations. Instead, we are standing in the middle of our living room and she is using the tone of voice she generally reserves for yelling at ex-boyfriends or arguing with her mother on the phone.
My throat feels tight and my voice becomes sharp. "I thought you would be happy for me."
Jane is silent again.
I force a fake laugh trying to lighten the mood. "You're always the one encouraging me to hook up with the hot talent."
She rolls her eyes and yells, "Hook up! Not marry!"
The door to my bedroom opens. "Amelia, are you okay?"
"I'm fine Fin. I just need another minute." My voice doesn't convince me of either of those things.
"Take as much time as you need." He shuts the door.
Jane tosses my certificate onto the coffee table and lowers her voice. "Yes Millie, you should take as much time as you need."
I snatch my license from the table and look straight into her eyes. "I don't need any more time, Jane. I've taken the past six years to figure out what I want. I want this."
Now she laughs. It's a bitter tiny thing. "You want this? Or him?"
I clench my fists, crumpling the paper in my hand a little, and hiss at her. "How dare you! Of course this is about Fin!"
Then I notice the freshly rumpled form in my hand and begin to smooth it out. It needs to be put away, before it gets ruined. So I pick up my bag.
"So you've been dickfounded." Jane crosses her arms and curls her lips into an ugly sneer.
I don't even bother to look at her anymore. Instead I focus on making the document safe between the pages of my Samuel Beckett tome that's still in my bag. "I've been what?"
"Dickfounded... like dumbfounded but with penis. You found some dick and lost your mind, obviously." She turns to our bar and pours herself a shot of warm tequila.
I wince as I watch her take it. "That's ridiculous. This might not make sense to you because you've never felt a connection of this proportion with the meatheads you date..."
Jane slams the glass down and yells again. "Oh I'm too dumb to understand now am I?"
She pours a second shot, lowers her voice and points her finger at me. "Well let me ask you this, since you're so much smarter than I am... What happens after Friday? Hmmm? Do you still work at RAA? Do you still live here? Are you moving to England or Spain or wherever the fuck Fin is filming his next job at? Do you follow him around like a puppy dog and become his assistant instead of Eric's?"
It's Jane saying the words that fill the space between us, but we both know that she's voicing some of my own concerns right now.
"We'll figure it out." My own voice is just a whisper.
"We. You and Fin. And what about me? You know I can't afford to stay in this apartment without you." Jane downs the second shot.
My blood runs cold and my stomach feels like I ate the worm. "Wow! Really Jane? Is that what this is about then? Scared that you won't have my half of the rent anymore... or your wing-woman when you go out... or someone to get up early and clean the apartment on Saturday morning while you sleep off a hangover? Silly me, I thought this moment was about the fact that someone has actually fallen in love with me or that I found someone that can be a true partner with for life!"
I begin to gather Fin's clothes from the desk chair where he left them earlier.
Jane huffs. "For life.... Good luck with that!"
With Fin's clothes in one hand, I pick up my bag in the other. "Forget that I ever fucking asked you to be my maid of honor."
I storm back to my bedroom and slam the door. Fin is sitting on the edge of the made bed with the air conditioner off. He stands and I rush into his arms as the tears come.
He murmurs into my hair. "I'm sorry, Millie. I'm so, so, sorry..."
I shudder and gasp between hysterical sobs. "You heard?"
"Not all of it. But some parts were impossible not to." He sighs.
His arms feel strange around me. They hold me, but I don't feel embraced. I look up at his face. Fin grimaces and it reminds me of the way his character looked as he lay close to dying in season two.
He licks his lips. "I'll understand if you want to call off this whole..."
I smash my mouth against his and twine my arms around his neck. His muscles come alive and his arms tighten around me. They feel familiar again.
"I still want to marry you and I don't want to stay here tonight. Can we go back to your hotel?" I rest my head on his shoulder.
Fin rubs my back. "Better yet, I'll book you a room at the W Hotel. You can stay there tonight to avoid the paparazzi, while I sleep at my hotel... since the groom shouldn't see the bride the night before the wedding."
"That's very old-fashioned and superstitious of you." I look up and see even through his beard that he is blushing.
He shrugs. "Well, while most of what we're doing is bucking tradition, we obviously need all the luck we can get. I thought for sure Jane would be on our side and my brother Paul would be the difficult one. Now I'm terrified to talk to him. He's a barrister and one of my business partners, so he's very keen on questions."
"Maybe since Jane took on the role of the inquisitor, Paul will surprise you with a hearty hug and best wishes?" I chuckle.
Fin doesn't laugh. He takes his clothes from my hand. "Perhaps."
We separate and he puts on his clothes, while I pull my duffel bag from under the bed. When I turn to take some clothes from my dresser drawers, Fin sits beside the bag. He unzips it and holds it open for me. I place my things inside and then look down at myself and realize I'm still in my robe.
My hand goes to the tie at my waist but I don't pull. Fin takes it from my hand and unravels the knot. He rests his forehead against my bare skin. His breath is hot and moist against my navel when he finally speaks. "I don't need to have a witness either."
His curls are dry now. I comb my fingers through them, loosening a few tangles. "I want what you want Fin. If you want Paul to be your best man, you should ask him."
He looks up at me and nods. "I want this."
Did he hear me say these exact words to Jane before?
As I look into Fin's eyes, they are like freshly tilled soil. The promise to grow something beautiful and lush is within them. I lean down to kiss him again and it makes something bloom deep within me.
Fin finally chuckles. "If you keep kissing me like that in your state of undress, we may never get out of here."
I pull out a green bra and panties set and put them on. "I'll hurry up and then gladly get trapped with you, anywhere but here."
"No rush love. I'll wait forever if you want me to." He looks at me again with those moist, brown eyes as he lies back on the mattress with his hands behind his head.
My dress slides over my head and my sandals onto my feet. "I'm ready."
He smiles at me, stands up and puts my bag onto his shoulder. "Let's go then."
