Chapter 22
Fluffy pancakes dripping with syrup, and a cup of hot, strong coffee.
That is apparently how I celebrate my engagement. Fin suggested mimosas.
"No thank you. I already feel a bit drunk from the last fourteen hours." I blush as I admit it.
So we're eating room our service breakfast, dressed in the hotel bathrobes. The soft fuzziness matches the fog of post coital bliss. The moment is perfect.
Fin starts chuckling to himself. I sip my coffee and tilt my head at him appraisingly. "What are you laughing about?"
"You know how people always ask how you got engaged? Well, when they ask me, I'll have to say that I was stark naked and my wife, the writer, was speechless and cackling like a nutter. What will they think of us?" He bites a piece of bacon.
I snort. "Technically you asked while you were in flagrante delicto. But I suppose the naked proposal will have to be what we tell our parents... Shit! I have to tell my parents! They barely tolerate my job at the agency. Maybe I shouldn't tell them yet..."
I put my coffee cup down and frown. "But I'll have to do it before a tabloid does.... And once this gets out, every reporter in every interview will ask you about it! I'm sure Marcy is not going to happy about this. And I still have to figure out things at RAA..."
Fin remains unflustered. He smiles and continues to eat his breakfast while I anxiously scrub my hands across my face. "Why don't we keep this a secret between us Fin? Just for now..." I peer through my fingers at him.
He frowns and stares into his cup of tea, swirling it in his hand like he's reading our fortunes in the leaves. "I don't know Millie. I enjoy my privacy but I'm not a fan of lies or secrets. Not when it comes to something this big especially. I love you and if you love me then you shouldn't give any care to what others say about our relationship. We don't need to follow anybody else's rules or timeline."
I stand up and walk around the table. I remove the cup from his hand and put it back onto its saucer. Then I sit on his lap. I trace my finger across the scar over his eye.
"I know that I want to spend every moment I can with you. I believe that means that I'm in love you Fin. And I hope to build upon this beginning with you, to make these feelings grow and last over time... But you have to understand that you've been in this world of paparazzi and press releases for years now. Meanwhile no one other than my mother or Jane has ever given a care about my love life. I just need some time to get used to my new normal."
He purses his lips and then sucks his teeth. "Don't get it wrong Millie... that stuff is never going to feel normal or right. I'm still not used to it. But this..." He points between our two hearts. "This is MY new normal. And I'll be damned if I let some twats with cameras chase that away. So I'll make you a deal..." He pauses.
"What?" I swirl my finger through the hair on his chest.
Fin puts his hand on top of mine to stop my movements. He presses his lips together before he speaks. "I will keep our relationship a secret. But only if you marry me right away. I still have that special date planned for Friday. Let's get married then."
"A secret wedding? Is this preparation for Cymbeline? How very method of you!" I'm teasing Fin but the writer in me can't ignore the romance of sneaking off to get married. I bite my bottom lip and squint my eyes at him.
Fin smiles. "Well my Imogen, what say you?"
I kiss him. He is as sweet and salty as the toast with jam and the bacon he ordered for breakfast. "Yes seems to be the only word I can say to you lately."
His hand travels slowly up my thigh. "Superb. Friday it is."
No sooner are the words out of his mouth than my assistant skills kick into overdrive, thinking of the logistics involved in what he is suggesting. The first, most critical one springs to mind. Abruptly, I hop up from Fin's lap and he looks worried that I might bolt out the door like a frightened rabbit.
He's got his puppy dog eyes on again, so I lean over to kiss the look off his face. "We need to go get our marriage license today if you want this to be legal on Friday."
He sighs. "So much for staying in bed all day...."
I grab his hands and tug on him to make him rise from the chair. "First, we'll swing by my apartment so I can change and grab my birth certificate. Then we'll head over to the city clerk's office in the court building on Staten Island. It will be quieter there and hopefully easier to fly under the radar than in Manhattan. Why are you just standing there Covington? Call Mike and have him bring the car around!"
I toss him his phone and Fin grins from ear to ear. "I like this bossy side of you! Very sexy!"
"Well I'm very happy to hear that. Because when I'm your wife I intend on bossing you around quite a bit..." I bat my eyes at him and purr. "Fin pick up your socks. Fin take out the trash..."
He comes over and wraps his arms around me and growls. "Tell me more. What else would you want your husband to do for you?"
I bite my lip and then whisper, "Fin... roll over, you're snoring."
"Hey! I don't snore!" He denies with a chuckle.
"Oh yes you do. Just a little bit. But don't worry it's adorable." Then I give him one more peck before I busy myself collecting my strewn clothing.
While he talks to Mike, I head into the bathroom. When I emerge fully dressed, Fin is still in his robe and on the phone. He stares out the window, chewing his lip. "Yes there are a few of them out there. Ok I'll tell her."
He hangs up and turns to me, concern creasing his brow. "Mike says that you should go out first and walk to the parking garage that's around the corner. He'll be waiting there for you. Once you're in the tinted out backseat, he'll swing around for me."
I nod. With a half-hearted smile at me, Fin starts to rummage in his open suitcase. I sit on the edge of the bed to slip on my shoes and watch him. He pulls a pair of boxer briefs out and puts them on. Then he pauses and seems far away, lost in thought.
My stomach twists so I stand up to give it space to unknot. I want to take a step toward him but I don't. I inhale a deep breath before I speak. "Second thoughts?"
Fin's eyes come back into focus. He looks at me and then runs his hands through his hair. "No no... Sorry I just..." Then he drops his head to look toward his suitcase, but I see his eyes retreat again.
I take one tiny step toward him and twist the ring on my thumb. "It's okay if you've changed your mind." But saying it doesn't feel okay and suddenly I can't expand my lungs.
He remains silent, eyes glazed over. Despite the crushing sensation building in my chest I take another step toward him. I pull the ring off my thumb. The motion snaps him out of it and his head jerks up, eyes wide. "What do you think you're doing?!"
But then he takes my hands and pushes the band back onto my thumb. My face feels hot and my voice is tight. "I thought..." But his mouth is on mine so I can't finish the sentence.
The way Fin kisses creates a rift in the space time continuum, because it feels like it goes on forever making me forget everything that ever was and everything that is meant to be. Yet, when he pulls away it is over far too soon and I want him connected to me once again.
As long as he kisses me like this everyday then I will never regret marrying him.
Fin is smiling again. "I've found a woman that can quote Beckett at will. I'd be as slow as treacle to not recognize how rare that is! I'm afraid you're stuck with me."
I watch him put on chinos and a t-shirt. He throws a chambray button down and a baseball cap into his bag, along with his glasses and personal documents.
His phone chimes and looks at the text. "Mike's ready whenever you are."
I nod and Fin walks me to the door where he gives me another kiss. "For luck."
