The Long Nightmare

Carissa wasn't really a big fan of sleeping, but she did love her dreams. She dreams about when she'll finally become a full Goddess and no longer has to have mortals worries. She can get near the River Styx without worrying the souls will take her and drag her away, no more having to run away from the monsters that want to eat her, and having a better chance at getting rid of her annoying cousin. But tonight things were different. Instead of having her really good dreams she was having an awful one. She died before her 18th birthday, her father didn't see her soul floating in the river and it was too late to bring her back. Gasping she shot out of bed her eyes wide and breathing harshly. Never had she had a dream like that? Was it a sign? A vision? She was always told dreams were happy now she was fearing for her life. "Ok Carissa, calm down, it's not like what you just saw is written in stone, the future can change right?" Laying back down she curled up. "Nothing can happen to you here, the Underworld is the safest place for the princess of it right.... Why am I talking to myself? Oy." Carissa tried going back to sleep but she couldn't and ended up staying awake all night fearing for her life.

Hades came into her room same time every school day only to see her sitting up in her bed looking away from him. "You're up already?" He asked confused. Carissa turned to him making him see her blood shot and worried eyes. "Carissa! Are you ill?" He came over to her and felt her forehead.

"Can I stay home in bed today, please?" Carissa weakly asked.

Hades started moving her head around. "What is it? Stomachache? Headache? Infection? Sore throat?" He opened her mouth and looked down her throat.

Carissa removed his hands from her face. "Dad, please."

When Hades saw nothing wrong with her except her eyes he flamed up. "Were you up all night again? Carissa! How many times have I told you not to do that?!"

"I have a good reason, just please not today." Carissa begged.

"Oh no, let this be a lesson to you, you have a job to do, now get out of bed and get spying." He growled as he stomped out of her room. "Oh and you're grounded!" He shouted before he slammed her door shut.

Sighing sadly she got out of bed and turned into Kareena. Grabbing her breakfast Pain and Panic left her and picking up some coffee with sugar to help wake her up a bit before going to school.

To her surprise when she got there everyone was looking as scared as she was, she could hear what a few students were saying.

"It was awful."

"All the screaming!"

''I've never been so scared in my life!"

"I had to sleep in bed with my mom and dad!"

"CASSANDRA! YOU'RE STILL HERE! THANK ZEUS!"

Carissa knew that voice and saw Icarus, Cassandra and Hercules by their lockers making her go over to them.

"Icarus, what's wrong with you?" Hercules asked his best friend.

"Something horrible, I had a not a dream."

"You had a not a dream too?" Hercules asked shocked.

Now Carissa was interested as the for of them talked about their not a dreams.

Icarus saw Cassandra fly into the sun, Cassandra had a dream she lived in a cottage with 7 Icarus, and Hercules got eaten by the hydra.

"I hope this isn't some kind of vision, I don't need another curse." Cassandra said in disgust.

"I just hope I never have another dream like that! That could really mess up a guy." Icarus said freaking out.

"Maybe Morpheus is just having a rough night, I'm sure it will never happen again." Hercules said as they started walking to class.

Of course he was wrong.

Carissa went to bed early that night, and kept seeing different ways on how she can die before she can become a Goddess.

Meanwhile Zeus called all the Gods to wake up and meet on Olympus, everyone was there still in their pajamas, even Hades.

"What are we meeting for this time of night Zeus?!" Ares shouted outraged. "I got a war first thing in the morning and I gotta be refreshed."

"There's an item of new business that needs our immediate attention!" Zeus shouted over everyone's complaints. "The latest approval ratings are in."

Hades spoke up. "Bro, big guy, what? You're always at the top of the approval ratings, huh? Well except for that time you dropped a pile of thunderbolts on Pompi!! Oy was I busy, that was good."

"We're not here to talk about who's at the top of the ratings!" Zeus replied. "The problem is at the bottom! Morpheus, God of sleep."

Everyone looked over at Morpheus surprised.

The very confused God tried to think. "How is that possible? I don't understand this? I haven't done anything different, I am taken aback."

"Well it seems mortals haven't been sleeping well these past couple of nights, they're having very bad dreams." Zeus told him while glaring.

"Bad dreams?" Morpheus said more confused than before. "What is that? There's no such thing as bad dreams, Dreamland is the happiest place on Earth."

"Maybe the God of sleep has something wrong with his little blankie." Ares said grabbing Morpheus's blanket that puts everyone to sleep when he flies over them.

"I'm sure that's not it and I resent your tone." Morpheus told Ares before studying his blanket. "I keep it in moth ball, I was it in soft water, look. Take a look for yourself it's in perfect shape." He started waving it around.

"STOP FLAPPING THAT THING AROUND!" Ares shouted.

"Hey hey hey!" Hades tried to wave the annoying sleeping mist away from him. "Come on! What kinda God are you?"

"It looks like it's still in good working order." Zeus admitted after looking at the blanket. "But it still doesn't explain all the bad dreams"

"I can explain them, you gave the job to the wrong guy." Everyone turned to see Thanatos, Morpheus's younger brother and the only God that wasn't given a title when Zeus assigned what the Gods should be the Gods of. Thanatos wanted to be God of sleep but Zeus gave it to Morpheus just because he's the other brother.

"Thanatos, this doesn't really concern you." Morpheus told him.

"Says you." Thanatos replied before walking over to Zeus. "I really think my brother has lost it, personally I think he should have a llllooooonnnnnngggg vacation."

"Hmm." Zeus thought about it. "You may have something there."

Morpheus ran over. "Hey, if you're accusing me of sleeping on the job well that simply is not true."

"Oh yeah? Just look at what you did to the son of Zeus." Thanatos replied before he opened up the clouds to show Hercules was not falling asleep and his trainer Phil was trying to get him to sleep by singing terribly making all the Gods cover their ears. "If he's afraid of his own dreams how is he ever going to be a hero?"

"Enough!" Zeus cried out. "I can't watch no more."

"And lets not forget the poor daughter of Hades." Thanatos added.

Hades caught what he said. "Wait a minute, I'm Hades and I got a daughter." He quickly ran to the front as everyone gathered to see Carissa crying in her sleep leaving her face and pillow covered in tears.

"The girl keeps seeing many ways she could die before she becomes one of us." Thanatos explains making everyone gasp. Hades flamed up so bright Olympus looked like it was day time and gave Morpheus a deadly glare.

"WHY YOU I'M GONNA!!" Hades tried to attack him but Zeus, Hephaestus and Ares quickly grabbed him holding him back. "I YELLED AND GROUNDED HER FOR STAYING UP ALL NIGHT!! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!"

"Looks to me like you are falling asleep on the job Morpheus! I'm giving you until tomorrow night to fix this problem or I'm putting someone else in charge of sleep!" Zeus announced

Thanatos gave his brother a smug look before he walked off. "Woo hoo, the son of Zeus and the daughter of Hades is going to have such a bad night."

Hades went to the Underworld as quickly as he could and rammed into Carissa room. "Carissa! Wake up!" Hades shook both her shoulders firmly until she opened her eyes. Embracing her trying to calm her down. "I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have been so hard on you, I know you not being able to sleep isn't your fault."

Carissa wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her pajamas before she held on to Hades hiding her face into his chest terrified.

"It's going to be alright Carissa, I won't let anything happen to you, you will be a full Goddess." Hades assured her before Hermes flew in. "Hey hey hey, who invited you?" Hades asked as Carissa peeked out of his grasp to see him there.

"Sorry to interrupt the touching father-daughter moment here cats, but Morpheus wants a gig with the Princess of the Underworld ASAP!"

"What?!" Hades flamed up. "After what he did to her? Forget it!"

"Calm down my flame man, he thinks he has a way to stop her from having these bad dreams but he needs her help to do it." Hermes explained.

"Well then I'm coming too." Hades told him.

"Sorry bro, but he said just her, otherwise you might attack him again." Hermes replied.

"Then she's not going!" Hades snapped as he held on to his daughter tighter.

"Well it's either she helps now so the bad dreams go away and or she doesn't go and they won't go away." Hermes reasoned.

Sighing Hades looked down at his daughter who still looked terrified. "Alright, but I want her home right after that, make sure he gets that!"

"Right, come on babe, lets scat." Hermes offered his hand. Carissa kissed her father's cheek before she stood up and made her nightgown turn into her dress before allowing Hermes to take her to Morpheus.

When they got close the line to see Morpheus was huge. "No sweat it babe, you've been summoned." Hermes assured her. "Clear a pass people, goddess princess coming through!" Hermes told all the mortals that were waiting in line before they heard another voice that was Phils.

Carissa turned to see Hercules, Pegasus, and Phil coming too. "Carissa? Morpheus beseeched you too?" Hercules asked surprised before he say her face. "Have you been crying?"

"Hercules, Carissa, I need your help." Morpheus invited them in with the angry mortals still in line. "Lets go into my office where we can talk privately, I can't even hear myself think over here." He showed them the way before he looked at the mortals. "Folks, if you cold just write the dreams down and slip them under my door." He told them before slamming the door shut.

"So what did you want to see us about?" Carissa asked as she took the coffee Morpheus offered her.

"I am an absolute wreck over this whole dream thing, I mean look at me, I'm turning into a basket case." He explained before chugging down his own coffee.

"Yeah, so are we." Phil spoke up. "We're not getting any sleep! What's going on?"

"You know, it's my brother Thanatos. He must have found away to turn dreams into something frighting."

"I'll say." Hercules stepped forward. "That hydra I keep dreaming about is as scary as they come."

Carissa glares at him. "Hey, I have a seven headed hydra in my swimming pool and he is one of my coolest pets."

"Thanatos is clearly taking everyones deepest fears and using them so people will turn against me. You two have got to stop him."

"Why us?" Carissa asked curious. "You're a God and he's your brother."

"I'm just the God of sleep, this is righting right from wrong, that's a hero's business and assistance from a very powerful yet smart princess." Morpheus explained.

"What exactly do you want the kids to do?" Phil asked.

"Stand up to Thanatos in dreamland and take away his most powerful weapon, fear. Carissa knows all about that since she's the daughter of Hades."

"Well if you need a hero, I'm in." Hercules told him.

"And as his personal trainer, I'm in too." Phil told him.

Morpheus points over to his bed making Carissa widen her eyes and back away. "No way! I'm not getting in a bed with them."

"But Carissa you have to stop my brother."

"Not happening." Carissa refused before Hercules grabbed her and pulled her on making Morpheus quickly put the blanket over them making them go into a deep sleep.

The three of them arrived at Dreamland only to hear Thanatos laughing at them. Carissa heard Phil scream and looked to see Phil was pointing at a huge woman. "This is the mother of all nightmares, it's.... my mother!!"

Carissa couldn't help but chuckle, a hero in training scared of his mom and he was still panicking. "MORPHEUS!! TAKE THE BLANKET OFF!!"

"You can't run and you can't hide! This is Dreamland!" Phil's mother now became the Hydra.

"Carissa, tell your pet to sit! Or something!" Hercules screamed.

Carissa rolled her eyes. "I said I have a SEVEN headed hydra, this one only has three idiot."

The hydra then grabbed Hercules by the cape he was wearing and tried to eat him. "Help! Carissa!"

"Hey, there's nothing I can do." Carissa shrugged.

"Well then what should I do?!" Hercules screamed.

"You have to face your fears, not the Hydra, duh." Carissa rolled her eyes. "No wonder Morpheus needed me hear, he needs someone with brains."

Hercules took off his cape and tried to make a run for it but the hydra kept showing up.

"It's just a dream Herc!" Phil shouted. "It can't hurt you!" He hits a rock to prove his point but he hurt his hand. "Hey I didn't say it couldn't hurt me." He pushed Hercules away when he reached him. "Go be brave over there."

Carissa rolled her eyes. "Ok, I've had enough of this." She went over to the hydra and screamed loudly. "SIT!!!" The hydra sat right away making it look confused.

"Hey, what's going on?" The hydra asked in Thanatos's voice.

"If you're a hydra then you're underworld property and I'm the princess of it which means I control you." Carissa explained. "Now roll over."

Thanatos had no choice but to do as she said until he had enough then turned back into his real form. "Why can't I scare you?!" He demanded.

"Because I know you can't hurt me." Carissa explained.

"But I can really really scare you!" Thanatos said putting on a scary face.

"Hey, I'm princess of the Underworld, you can't scare me so what are you going to do?" Carissa asked.

"Um.. I'm not sure. Never happened before." Thanatos admitted.

Since he was distracted Hercules grabbed Thanatos by the neck. "The dream's over Thanatos, time to go back and face reality."

"No, you can't make me." Thanatos whined.

"Ok then, Carissa?" Hercules held out Thanatos turns her making her show an evil smirk before she set her hands on fire. "Even though this is just a dream Thanatos my cousin's flames aren't." Hercules taunted.

Thanatos screamed as the princess of the dead on near him. "Ok ok! You win! Next stop reality."

Everyone ended up in Morpheus's bed, Carissa was the first to jump out of it. "Ew ew ew, never again."

"So little brother it was you." Morpheus looked down at his brother and grabbing the evil blanket Thanatos made and studied it. "Hmm, patches of individual fears, very clever, and very good use of the cross stitching. If it wasn't so evil I'd be proud."

"Keep it, I don't need it anymore, I give, you're the God of Sleep." Thanatos pouted.

"Well I'm glad you won't be troubling people with bad dreams anymore, dream land is suppose to be a happy place." Morpheus smiled.

"Not so fast." Hercules ran over. "Morpheus, bad dreams isn't necessarily a bad thing. I mean I feel really good right now."

"You do?" Phil asked confused.

"How so?" Morpheus asked.

"Thanks to him I learned how to face my fears." Hercules answered.

"Not very well since you kept running from it, but it's a start." Carissa mumbled.

"Hmm, you might be on to something there. I guess I haven't really explored the potential of dreams." Morpheus agreed.

"Yeah, thanks to him I think I know how to make my bad dreams into good dreams, I just gotta roast something." Carissa set her hands on fire making Thanatos scream and jump into Morpheus's arms.

"You know." Morpheus said calmly. "I think I have an idea."

Morpheus took Thanatos and Carissa to Olympus.

Carissa saw the other Gods were having a meeting.

"And a big congratulations to Hades for being back at the bottom of the ratings list." Zeus announced.

"Wait ago. OW!!" Ares patted Hades on the back only to get his hand burned.

"Thank you! Thank you! It's good to be back!" Hades shouted.

"Dad!" Carissa ran over to him.

Hades smiled. "And here comes my real reward now." Carissa ran into his arms and smiled big as they embraced.

Hermes saw Morpheus and flew over. "Hey Morpheus, you're number 5! Cools vile."

"Yes." Zeus agreed. "It seems mortals are getting use to bad dreams."

"Mortals identify what issues and fears in their sleep state, work through them, and then live happier and more full fulled lives." Morpheus explained.

"Must you always be such an egg head?" Carissa asked.

"Yeah, speak in some way we can understand you." Ares demanded.

"Simply put bad dreams put into pictures, fears that can't be put into words." Morpheus clarified.

"You don't say." Zeus says impressed.

"Hercules and Carissa are the very first to make a bad dream into an experience that made it into a good dream." Morpheus told everyone.

"Ha! That's my girl!" Hades said proudly pulling Carissa closer to him.

"Keep up the good work." Zeus complemented Morpheus.

"Actually it's not my work." Morpheus admitted. "It's the work of my brother Thanatos."

"What's going on here?" Zeus asked.

"I suggest you make a new position." Morpheus explained. "God of Dreams and give it to Thanatos."

"Yeah, you gave everyone a job but him." Carissa pointed out.

"Well..." Zeus hesitated. "I suppose that's fair." He shook Thanato's hand. "Welcome aboard the God Squad."

"Thank you sir, I won't let you down, I'll give those mortals wonderful dreams and the scariest nightmares."

"You better not give my Carissa nightmares like you were before again or consider your butt burnt." Hades threatened.

"I agree, not too scary." Zeus said. "When someone's falling in a dream I don't want them to hit the ground, agreed?"

Thanatos pouted but wrote it down.

"And no one ever getting chased by monsters ever gets caught." Morpheus added.

"Right these are mortals we're dealing with, that would be cruel." Zeus continued.

"And no one sees themselves getting murdered." Carissa shivered at the memory.

"There's nothing wrong with them showing up to school naked is there?" Thanatos asked.

"You are one sick dude." Was all Carissa had to say.
