The Gorgon
Hercules made his way to the Underworld, he was going to try to make peace with his cousin like he said. The Boatman stopped him. "Be gone mortals, none but the dead shall pass."
"Um hi, I'm Hercules, Carissa's cousin, I wanted to ask if she wanted to hang out." Hercules said nervously.
The boatman thought about it. "Well, her father is gone so I suppose going out wouldn't be that bad." Hercules walked over to where Carissa was watching Pain and Panic play ping pong with an eyeball.
"Carissa?"
Carissa turned to see her cousin was standing in the doorway. "What are you doing here?" Carissa demanded.
Hercules gulped. "Me and my friends are going to get some milkshakes, would you like to join us?"
Carissa crossed her arms. "Why? So you can push me around like your dad does to my dad?"
Hercules sighed. "Carissa, what happens with our fathers has nothing to do with us."
"Oh no you don't." Pain and Panic stood in front of Carissa.
"When Hades is gone Carissa is our responsibility." Panic shouted.
"Yeah." Pain agreed. "And we don't want her to be influenced by you."
"Alright." Carissa sighed.
"WHAT?!" Pain and Panic shouted at her.
"Work is slow, dad is gone and I'm bored so see ya guys." Carissa said as she waved to them and left with Hercules.
"So where did your dad go?" Hercules asked as they got in the boat.
"Some desperate person wanted to make a deal." She replied.
That desperate person was non other than Medusa, the Gorgon. A woman with snakes for hair and could turn people into stone just by looking into their eyes. However she was cursed, she never wants to turn people to stone all she wants is a friend. "What I wouldn't give for a friend who isn't a rock head." She sighed sadly as she looked at all the poor people that were frozen in stone. "I'd give anything to change the way I look." Her snakes then tried to cheer her up by changing her hair into an updo. Medusa just chuckled. "Nice try." She then looked up at the sky and shouted. "HEY! Any of you Gods out there, I'm ready to deal."
A large blue fire appeared behind her revealing Hades. "Hey, how you doing? Hades, lord of the dead."
A bright pink light surrounded by hearts appeared in front of him and music played. 'Aphrodite, Aphrodite, Aphroditeeee, Goddess of love!' "Greeting mortal, I am Aphro... Oh no!" She turned to face Hades. "What are you doing here? No no no, this is my beseechment!"
Hades just smirked. "Aphrodite babe, looking good. Love the song by the way."
"Mm hmm, save it, look this is really my territory alright, it's clearly a self-esteem issue."
Hades rolled his eyes. "Issue? Oy, listen babe, may I call you babe? Last thing I wanna do is step on your territory but desperation is my bag. Ok? It's my issue."
"Not really, huh uh, sticking your nose where it doesn't belong is your bag." Aphrodite argued, both of them not noticing Medusa until she spoke up.
"Ah excuse me, I really don't care who does the job as long as somebody makes me look good." Hades raised a brow at her with a look saying 'Is she serious?' While Aphrodite walked up to her.
"Medusa, you want real friends right?" She asked.
"Right. Non-mineral." Medusa clarified.
Aphrodite waved her hand making hearts appear. "Well real friends will like you for who you are, not what you look like."
Hades face palmed. "Oh please! In Storybook Land maybe." He turned to Medusa. "Look, all you have to do is lose the gorgon image and become human."
"You can do that?" Medusa asked him.
"Yes! This is what I do." He said in a tone that asked. 'Where has your head been?' before saying gently. "Medusa, babe, here's my offer. You work for me at night doing your gorgon terror thing, bugga bugga bugga, And by day I'll make you human. You can frolic, and play, gossip, whatever, talk issues with all your little human friends, it will be great."
Aphrodite had enough and pulled Medusa back over to her. "Ok, you do know he's the lord of the dead right?"
Medusa shrugged. "He's coming up with the goods, and what are you offering?"
Aphrodite made a pair of red heart shaped sunglasses appear. "These will totally work for you, you can look at people and they won't turn to stone." Aphrodite said as she puts them over Medusa's eyes who could now only see the color red. "Keeps harmful gorgon magic in, harmful rays out."
"And?" Medusa asked not impressed.
"And? Well, I don't." Aphrodite mumbled not knowing what else to say.
Medusa took off the glasses. "You're really wowing me." She said sarcastically as she gave them back to Aphrodite.
Hades smirked and glided back over to Medusa. "So do we have a thing here or what?" He asked as he took out a contract.
"Medusa, if you live a lie you will never know if your friendships are true." Aphrodite told her.
Hades laughed. "Will you stop! You're killing me. Here, just for fun, just to thicken the plot I'll sweeten the deal. If she finds one true friend that likes her for who she is, then hey, boom, I'll make her human... FOREVER! What do you say?" Hades asked giving Medusa a pen.
Medusa smiled. "What do I say? between the stupid glasses or the full on makeover?" She pointed to the contract. "THIS!" Medusa grabbed the pen and signed her name on the contract making the contract fire up and disappear.
Hades smiled looking pleased as he rubbed his hands together. "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-BOO!!"
Medusa's skin went from green to white, her monster eyes became human brown eyes, and her snakes turned into normal human hair. "Man, I should have beeseeched you years ago." Medusa told Hades loving her new look.
Hades waved her off. "Go on, get out of here you crazy thing, but remember you're mine at sunset."
"Later." Medusa waved as she ran towards the town.
Hades waved back while Aphrodite glared at him. "Wow, you do nothing but pry on the weak and devantaged."
Hades shrugged. "It pays the bills." With that he snapped his fingers and was gone.
Pain and Panic screamed when Hades appeared behind them. "I just made a huge deal boys, where is Carissa?"
Pain and Panic shook nervously. "Well, Carissa went out for a milkshake." Pain explained.
Hades raised his brow at them then shook his head as he walked out. "That girl better not ruin her dinner."
Panic nervously looked at Pain. "Should we have told him she went with Hercules?"
Pain shook him by the neck. "And get roasted? Are you nuts?!"
At the mall Hercules was walking with Carissa who changed her skin and hair color so people wouldn't freak out over to Icarus and Cassandra. "Guys, meet my cousin Carissa."
Cassandra gave her a friendly smile. "Hey."
"Wait a minute, you look familiar." Icarus said eyeing her closely.
"I was there when my dad and a tall freak with a twisted beard and a stupid hat chained you with a monkey." Carissa reminded him.
"Oh that's right." Icarus chuckled.
"So you're Hades's daughter?" Cassandra asked interested.
Carissa nodded. "Yeah."
"That's cool." Cassandra told her. "You don't look like I expected."
"I have to power to control fire and change the way I look." She explained.
"Well anyway Carissa, this is Icarus and Cassandra. We have another friend named Kareena but we couldn't find her."
Carissa shrugged. "That's fine, I'm going to go get my milkshake." She said walking away.
"Herc, isn't she suppose to be evil like her daddy?" Icarus whispered to him.
Hercules sighed. "To be honest, I never know what she is. She's nice to others and other times she's just trying to impress Hades."
Medusa found her way to a mall and smiled at everything since she's never seen anything but the forest before. She giggled as every guy was checking her out.
"Oh, excuse me." Medusa stuttered as she bumped into someone.
"It's fine, you lost or something?" Carissa asked.
"You could say that." Medusa replied. "I'm new here."
Carissa gave her a smile. "I know what that's like, wanna sit with me?"
Medusa gave her a big smile thinking she finally found a friend. "Sure, I'm Medusa."
Carissa shook her hand. "I'm Carissa, just a heads up I'm with a girl that can scare you, a guy whose brains were fried by the sun and my stupid cousin."
"I'd still love to meet them." Medusa said as they walked over.
Carissa took Medusa over and introduced everyone to her. "Guys, this is Medusa, she's new."
Hercules and Medusa looked at each others eyes and both felt butterflies in their stomachs.
While they all enjoyed their milkshakes.
"Ok I know I'm new here but that Adonis needs to get over himself." Medusa told them as they watched Adonis sits on someone while others brushed his hair and did his nails.
Carissa nodded agreeing. "And his girlfriend Helen, who could be that happy all the time?" She asked as Helen of Troy fed Adonis some grapes.
"I like these girls." Cassandra smiled at them before she glared at Icarus who was stuffing his face with food.
Hercules cleared his throat. "Um Medusa, I was just wondering if you're not too busy or anything..."
Icarus got what Hercules was going to do and stood up interrupting him. "So Medusa? Is there anyone special in your life? Cause uh, my boy Herc here is.."
Cassandra stomped on Icarus's food causing him to scream and Medusa and Carissa to laugh.
"Not yet, but I'm hoping." Medusa answered as she twirls her hair and bats her eyelashes at Hercules.
"Well I was wondering if uh.." Hercules tried again but once again was interrupted by Icarus.
"WOW!! Would you two kids look at that sunset?"
"Sunset?" Medusa gasped.
"When Apollo's on, he's on." Hercules said as he watched.
Medusa started slowly turning back into the gorgon. "I gotta go!" She shouted as she ran away.
"Medusa wait!" Hercules called but she was gone. "Did I come on too strong? Is it my breath?" Hercules asked.
"No." Icarus assured. "The ladies go wild for sardine and onion breath." He breathed right into Cassandra's face. "Isn't that right honey?" Cassandra got a big blast of his disgusting breath that her hair burned up causing her to faint.
Medusa ran to the other side of the mall. "Oh now this isn't good." She said as her hair turned back into snakes.
A waitress looked over at her. "Doll are you ok?" But when she looked into Medusa's eyes she turned to stone making everyone scream. "GORGON!!" And run away.
"Gorgon?!" Hercules shouted. "Oh man, I haven't trained for that, darn it."
Medusa got too scared and ran into the ladies bathroom. "Oh this is getting ugly." She said as she looked in the mirror to see she was a full gorgon again causing the mirror to crack. "Oh who asked you?"
Hercules ran over and stood next to the door. "I'm ready to face you monster, but uh.. could you come out of the ladies room please?"
Medusa sighed. "Well, this just gets more and more humiliating."
Hades appeared in front of her with Pain and Panic. "Ta da!" Hades sang out while Pain and Panic hid their faces in his chiron.
Hades looked down at them. "Would you open your eyes? She can only turn mortals to stone, dimwits."
Pain and Panic both snickered and blushed.
"It's not that boss." Pain assured.
"It's just that we're in the ladies room." Panic finished for them before they both chuckled.
Hades face palmed "Oy." He then smiled at Medusa. "So you ready for your first day of work for Team Hades huh?"
Medusa nervously looked around. "Sure, whatever, just get me out of here."
Hades snapped his fingers and they were out of their before Hercules knocked on the door. "Ah, are you coming out now? Hello? Hello?"
Carissa walked over to her cousin and pulled him away. "What are you doing? You look ridiculous."
"But there's a gorgon in there." Hercules told her.
Carissa looked at the door and looked inside. "No one is in there."
"What? Are you sure?" Hercules asked her confused.
''Positive, now if you excuse me I gotta get back home since dad is probably there by now."
At the Underworld Hades showed Medusa around. "Come on kid, don't feel bad about what happened up there. You know what, I believe any day now you'll find your one true friend, and then BADA BING!" He shouted snapping his fingers. "You're human."
"Lets just get started, what do I have to do?" Medusa asked.
"HEY!" Pain shouted as he came over. "Not so fast!"
Panic appeared next to him. "Everyone goes to orientation on their first day."
"Orientation?" Medusa asked looking up at Hades annoyed.
"I run a professional organization." Hades told her before he walked away from her letting her deal with 3 hours of pure boredom.
"I'm home!" Carissa called as she got out of the boat.
Hades appeared in front of her. "There you are princess, I got some great news. Your daddy hired a gorgon!"
Carissa smiled. "You did? That's awesome! Are you going to make her turn Hercules to stone?"
"All in good time babe, all in good time."
The next day at the school Hercules introduced Medusa to Kareena before class. However class was canceled by an emergency meeting.
"What's all this about?" Medusa asked.
"Emergency assembly, I predict utter boredom." Cassandra replied.
"Where were you last night?" Hercules asked Medusa. "You missed all the excitement.
"Oh it was just a bad hair day thing." Medusa lied.
"Oh yeah well, anyway, there was something I was going to ask you. Would you consider..." Once again Hercules was interrupted but it wasn't by Icarus.
"ZIP IT PUNKS!!" The town's Chef of Police shouted. "Alright quiet down, now listen up people, we got a gorgon at large." Carissa and Medusa both widened their eyes now interested. "Now the only way to slay a gorgon is by chopping off it's head. Behead it with a powerful slice." Carissa was worried this was the new gorgon her father hired, no way can she let that happen.
"Is something wrong?" Cassandra asked them.
Carissa and Medusa hugged each other both looking sick.
"When you chop of a gorgon's head, put it in a purse." The Chef continued making all the male students chuckle. "Not a wallet men! This is no time to be macho." He said as he showed off his own purse. "Any handbag will do, now once the head is in the purse take it to the proper place to be disposed of."
"Are you sure you're ok?" Hercules asked.
"Yeah, it's just this gorgon killing stuff is getting me worked up." Medusa told him.
"Hey, it gets us all worked up." Hercules said sounding cheerful making both Medusa and Carissa face palm. After the emergency assembly Carissa ran out of the school to look for the gorgon and warn it but all day she never found any clues or heard any screams. Sighing she went to the Malt Shop as Carissa with her human skin and hair and ordered herself some dinner before she spotted Hercules surrounded by empty cups.
"Hey cousin, why do you look so upset?"
Hercules sighed. "Remember that girl we met yesterday, the one I was going to ask out?"
Carissa nodded.
"She's the gorgon." Hercules told her.
"THE GORGON!!" Carissa shouted shock. At the word gorgon everyone ran out of the malt shop leaving just the two of them. Carissa suddenly had an idea. In Hercules asks out Medusa she can turn him to stone. She smiled at her cousin and asked. "So where are you going to take her on your date?"
"Didn't you just hear what I just said?" Hercules snapped at her getting in her face. "The monster that turns people to stone."
"I know what a gorgon is." Carissa glared pushing him away from her. "But come on Herc a relationship is build on compromises."
Hercules face palmed. "Carissa! There is no relationship!"
"Well maybe there's not a lot of EYE contact, but she had a winning personality." Carissa pointed out.
"SHE'S A MONSTER!! A FREAK!" Hercules shouted at her.
Carissa stared at him wide eyed before she gave him a look that could kill. "Oh I see, so the hero is training is too good to have a freak for a friend huh? What are you going to do Herc? Cut off Medusa's head and then put it in a purse?"
Hercules stared at her shocked. "What? I..."
Carissa continued feeling like she was on a roll. "And then what? You going to get rid of all the freaks uh? Who's next Herc? Freaks who are half goat half man?" She asked referring to Hercules's trainer and third father figure. "Freaks who can see the future?" She asked meaning Cassandra. "Freaks who flew too close to the sun?" Meaning Icarus and finally the big one. "Or the freak that can..." She turned herself into her regular form and flamed her whole body up. "SHAPE SHIFT AND SET HERSELF OF FIRE!!"
Hercules stared at her and got up. "I'll tell you what I'm going to do, what I should have done in the first place." He said getting up.
Meanwhile Medusa was crying in the woods, when Hercules found out she was the gordon he really hurt her feelings.
Hades appeared next to her smiling big. "Ok, lets rock and roll! See rock, it's a joke because you turn people to stone..." He shook his head and cleared his throat. "Ok."
"Count me out, I'm not up to it tonight." Medusa sighed sadly.
"Pardon?" Hades asked showing her the contract she signed. "No pay no play."
"Don't I get any sick days?" Medusa asked curling up.
Hades sighed, one of the best things about having a daughter is knowing that when others are upset they would like someone to talk to. "Ok, why don't you tell uncle Hades all about it and you'll feel much better." He uses the same words and tone with Carissa except he says 'Daddy' instead of 'Uncle Hades' of course.
"Well... ok." Medusa said smiling at him. "There's this boy and he's really.."
"MEDUSA!!"
Hades's flame went red as he growled. "I know that voice."
"Hercules." Medusa gasped.
"HERUCLES!" Hades turned back to Medusa. "That's the guy? Correct me if I'm wrong but Hercules is a hero and heroes KILL monsters like you, am I wrong?"
"Sure he hurt my feelings but I don't think he would kill me."
Hades clenched his fists and sunk his head into his shoulders before roughly pinching Medusa's cheek. "Such a cute world you live in, it really is, it's really nice, everybody gets along." He flames up his whole body. "WAKE UP LITTLE GIRL! THIS KID IS A GORGON SLAYER!!"
"Then... He's coming here to?"
Hades uses his finger to make a slash across his throat and his head came off. "Duh."
Medusa widened her eyes and grabbed her throat. "No! No I can't believe that."
"Ok, but hey if I were you I'd.. turn him to stone just a suggestion. How does my head look? Is it on straight?"
Medusa! Are you here?" Hercules continued to shout.
Medusa stared pushing Hades away. "Go, get out of here I can take care of myself."
"Alright alright, I'll just be over here if you need me." Hades said walking over to a bush.
"Over here Hercules!" Medusa shouted.
"Medusa?" Hercules asked as he raised a shield to cover his face.
Medusa sighed. "Lose the shield hero, it's too dark to see the monster."
Hercules lowered the shield. "I deserved that, that's why I brought you this..."
"ACHOO!!" Hades flared all the way up lighting up the forest making Medusa look into a pair of eyes that turned to stone in a second.
"YOU CREEP!" Medusa shouted at Hades.
"Hey hey, not my fault, I got a cold." Hades said as he came over. "I feel warm." He took her hand and put it against his forehead. "I feel warm huh? Besides if you had to turn anyone to stone I'm glad it was Jercules, I hate that kid."
"NO! CARISSA!" Hercules cried as his cousin who he talked into coming with him was now a stone statue.
"WHAT? CARISSA!" Hades ran over and pushed Hercules away looking at his stone daughter. "No no, NO NO NO NO!" Hades shouted as he put his hands on her face. "NOT HER! ANYONE BUT HER!"
Medusa looked confused at how caring Hades was being. "Did I miss something?"
Hercules had his hand over his eyes as he talked to her. "She's his daughter."
Hades hugged Carissa, he didn't want to cry in front of anyone let alone Hercules. But the only one he has ever really loved and loved him back is now forever gone.
Hercules gave Medusa the flowers. "Carissa talked some sense into me, I was wrong to treat you the way I did."
Medusa looked over at Carissa's statue. "She did? She really stood up for me?"
Hercules nodded his hand never leaving his face. "I don't get it, how could Carissa be stone? Isn't she a Goddess?"
"NO YOU IDIOT!" Hades shouted at him. "CARISSA WON'T BECOME 100% IMMORTAL UNTIL SHE'S 18!"
Medusa felt tears fall down her face. "She was my very first friend. Oh what have I done?"
'Aphrodite, Aphrodite, Aphroditeeee, Goddess of love!' Aphrodite appeared.
"AGAIN WITH THE SONG!" Hades yelled at her still hugging the statue.
"Well Medusa, you found your true friend that likes you for who you are." She turned to Hades. "So make her human loser."
Hades growled. "CAN'T YOU SEE I JUST LOST MY DAUGHTER!!"
Aphrodite took a closer look at the statue and saw it was Carissa. "Oh my."
Hades fell to his knees and hugged Carissa putting his head on her shoulder. "I can't believe she's gone, she's the only reason living in the Underworld not so bad, the only thing I love most. I promised to love and protect her."
Aphrodite couldn't believe what she was hearing, it seems the Gods may have had Hades all wrong. "You know Hades, I don't like to say nice things about you, but you are an amazing father."
"Wait! Hades, can we change our deal? What if I stay a gorgon and in return you make Carissa back to her normal self?"
Hades thought about that. "Alright here's the deal, you stay away from my daughter until she is fully immortal. When she is you two can be bffs, and instead of you becoming something else Carissa does, back to not being stone."
"Deal. "Medusa agreed. "I don't want to lose my true friend." Medusa signed the new contract and Carissa was turned back.
"What happened?" Carissa asked.
Hades quickly grabbed her and buried her face into his chest. "Don't look!" With that the two disappeared.
"Medusa, would you like to go out with me?" Hercules asked from behind the shield.
Medusa smiled. "Yeah." She turned to Aphrodite. "Um could I?"
Aphrodite made the sunglasses appear. "You go girl."
"I don't think we'll be needing this." Medusa said throwing Hercules's shield to the side.
Back in the Underworld...
"Dad, what is with you?" Carissa asked. Her dad won't let her out of his sight or his arms.
"Carissa, you were turned to stone by Medusa." Hades explained.
"What? How is that possible? I thought she could only do that to mortals."
Hades nervously rubbed his neck, he was hoping he'd never have to tell her the truth but now he guessed he had to. "Look Carissa, you still have mortal blood in you, you won't be a full Goddess till you're 18." Hades explained.
"I don't get it." Carissa told him.
"You were born mortal, I fed you a potion that will make you immortal, but it will take 18 years for it take full effect."
Carissa stared at her father before she shrugged her shoulders. "Okay."
"Okay? You're not mad?" Hades asked.
Carissa shook her head no. "I kinda knew I was mortal for a while, I once cut myself on accident and there was blood, Gods don't bleed." She explained before she hugged her dad. "Just a couple more years of mortality anyway."
Hades smiled and hugged her back never wanting to deal with that pain of losing her again.
