Fellowship Formed

Filius' POV

We've all gathered for the meeting. I sit beside Frodo. I had been asked by the dwarves to sit with them. But I wanted to with my cousin. So that he had Gandalf and I for support either side of him. Mum had been invited, but she said no. Anyway, Lord Elrond stands from his seat to address us all.

"Strangers from distant lands, friends of old. You have been summoned here to answer the threat of Mordor. Middle-Earth stands upon the brink of destruction. None can escape it. You will unite or you will fall" he explains. "Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom" he states. "Bring forth the ring Frodo" he tells my cousin.

Frodo looks at me and I nod my head encouragingly. He stands and heads over to the pedestal. He places the ring on it before returning to his seat. "So it is true" one of the human men say. He looks to be the leader of his group.

The members of the Council stare at the Ring, mesmerised by it. It appears to start whispering to each of them in turn. I heard something at the back of my mind and push it away. Suddenly the man stands to address the council.

"In a dream, I saw the eastern sky grow dark. But in the West a pale light lingered. A voice was crying: 'Your doom is near at hand'" he explains. His hand reaches towards the ring. "Isildur's Bane is found" he says lowly.

"Boromir" Elrond says firmly. Gandalf stands and begins to chant in the Black Speech. The ring echoes the harsh words. Thunder crackles as the sky darkens. I may not know black speech, but I know what Gandalf said. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the Darkness bind them.

"Never before has any voice uttered the words of that tongue here in Imladris!" Elrond states.

"I do not ask your pardon, Master Elrond, for the Black Speech of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the West. The Ring is altogether evil" Gandalf states.

"It is a gift. A gift to the foes of Mordor" Boromir states. "Why not use this Ring?" he asks as he gets up starting to pace. "Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe! Give Gondor the weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him" he suggests.

Strider stands up facing Boromir. "You cannot wield it! None of us can. The One Ring answers to Sauron alone. It has no other master" he states.

"And what would a ranger know of this matter?" Boromir asks. An elf stands up. He looks what I pictured Legolas would look like from mum's stories.

"This is no mere ranger. He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance" the elf states.

"Aragorn? This... is Isildur's heir?" Boromir asks.

"And heir to the throne of Gondor" the elf adds. Aragorn says something in elvish. The only thing I got with Legolas. So I was right, the elf is Legolas. Who retakes his seat.

"Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king" Boromir states.

"This conversation is mute, we are here to discuss the ring. Not who will lead Gondor" I state.

"Well said" Gloin says.

"Aragorn is right. We cannot use it" Gandalf states referring to the ring.

"You have only one choice. The Ring must be destroyed" Elrond states.

"Then what are we waiting for?" Gimli asks. Gimli grabs an axe and approaches the pedestal. He strikes the Ring with full force but is repelled back, throwing him to the ground. Concurrently, I notice Frodo wince in pain. The Ring remains intact with the shards of the axe all around it.

"The Ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli, son of Glóin, by any craft that we here possess. The Ring was made in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came" Elrond explains. "One of you must do this" he tells us

"One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. And the great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland. Riddled with fire and ash and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly" Boromir states.

"Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The Ring must be destroyed!" Legolas declares.

"And I suppose you think you're the one to do it?!" Gimli demands.

"And if we fail, what then?! What happens when Sauron takes back what is his?!" Boromir asks. All three groups start to argue. Gandalf joins in. Only Strider, Elrond, Frodo and I remain silent.

Until I hear Frodo say "I will take it". He stands and says it louder getting everyones attention. "I will take the Ring to Mordor. Though I do not know the way" he admits.

"I will help you bear this burden, Frodo Baggins, as long as it is yours to bear" Gandalf states.

"If by my life or death, I can protect you, I will" Strider states joining them. "You have my sword" he tells Frodo.

"And you have my bow" Legolas says joining them.

"And my axe" Gimli declares.

"And mine" I say going to stand by Frodo. "No way you're going on this journey without me" I tell him. He gives me a small smile.

"You carry the fate of us all little one" Boromir tells Frodo as he walks over to us. "If this is indeed the will of the Council, then Gondor will see it done" he states joining us. Sam, Merry and Pippin come out of hiding joining us.

"Ten companions" Elrond says looking at us all. "So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring" he declares. Ending the meeting.

"I'm gonna go talk to mum" I tell Frodo. He nods his head.

"I'm going to go see Bilbo" he tells me. I nod and we go our separate ways. I hope I made the right decision joining the fellowship. Wondering how mum will feel about it? Though something tells me she'd make the same decision had she been in my place and was sixty years younger. She did go with Bilbo to face a Dragon after all.
