Bilbo's 111th Party
Filius' POV
The party is in fall swing, the fireworks are going off and festivities are well underway. Some hobbits come in, staggering under the load of a huge birthday-cake, candles already lit. Others, including Frodo, are dancing to music being played by the band. I notice Sam looking at Rosie and roll my eyes. I lock eyes with Frodo and we smirk.
"Go on Sam! Ask Rosie for a dance!" I tell him.
"I think I'll just have another ale" he tells me.
"Oh no you don't! Go on!" I say and push him onto the dance floor. Frodo twirls Rosie and Sam stumbles into her arms. They begin to dance as I laugh with Frodo.
My mother and uncle Bilbo are telling the Hobbit children about the three trolls they faced on their journey. "There we were at the mercy of three monstrous trolls" Uncle Bilbo starts.
"And they were all arguing amongst themselves about how they were going to cook us" mum states. The kids ah in shock. Some even looked disgusted at the thought of eating another talking creature.
"Whether it be turned on a spit" Uncle Bilbo states. "Or whether they should sit on us one by one and squash us into jelly" he continues.
"Though Bert suggests sauteing and grilling us, with a sprinkle of sage" mum adds. "Though William tried to ate poor Bombur alive" she states. A cute hobbit child gasps and shakes her head.
"Don't worry he was fine" Uncle Bilbo assures her. "But they spent so much time arguing the wither-tos and why-fors, that the sun's first light cracked over the top of the trees — poof!" he says.
"And turned them all to stone!" mum finishes. The kids cheer and I decide to look around for the two trouble makers. It's been to quiet. I'm sure they are up to something. I see Gandalf preparing more fireworks and smile. I do enjoy watching them.
Suddenly one goes off from inside a tent and I groan. Damn those rascals. And it had to be Gandalf's special dragon firework for Uncle Bilbo. I notice mum walking with Frodo and Uncle Bilbo. "Mum get down!" I yell rushing over.
"Aunt Astrid, Bilbo, watch out for the dragon!" Frodo yells.
"Dragon? Nonsense!" mum tells him.
"There hasn't been a dragon in these parts for a thousand years" Uncle Bilbo tells him. Frodo pushes him to the ground and I do the same with my mother. The fire work dragon swoops low over our heads. It flies off and bursts into a beautiful finale over the lake. Hobbits clap and cheer.
I help mum up. "Pippin and Merry?" she asks as she dusts off her dress. Frodo helps up Uncle Bilbo.
"Who else?" I ask her.
"Looks like Gandalf already caught them, leave it to me" she tells me. "Oh and thank you dear" she says and kisses my cheek. Before going over to the trio.
"Anyway uncle, it's nearly time for your speech" I tell him.
"Oh so it is" he says. "Anyway you boys go have fun" he tells Frodo and I. We do so and Bilbo soon goes onto the stage to give his speech. I stand by Frodo as I see mum standing next to Gandalf. "My dear Bagginses and Boffins, Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubbs, Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots" he says. Everyone cheers.
"Proudfeet" Old Proudfoot corrects him. A few of us chuckle.
"Today is my one hundred and eleventh birthday!" Uncle Bilbo announces.
"Happy Birthday!" we all shout.
"Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve" he states. There is a dead silence from the crowd. They gaze at each other blank-faced, trying to figure out if they were just insulted. I notice mum shaking her head with an amused smile.
"I, uh, I h-have things to do" Uncle Bilbo stutters. While fiddling with something behind his back. "I regret to announce — this is The End. I am going now. I bid you all a very fond farewell" he states. He looks at Frodo and I mouthing 'good bye'. Before disappearing into thin air.
"What did he mean, this is the end?" Frodo asks me confused.
"I don't know, we have to find my mother and Gandalf" I tell him. He nods his head and we search all of Bag End before going home. To see only Gandalf looking into the fire smoking his pipe. Strange mum hates people smoking inside.
Frodo picks up Uncle Bilbo's ring. "He's gone hasn't he? He talked for so long about leaving. I didn't think he'd really do it" he mumbles.
"My mum left to, didn't she?" I ask Gandalf. He nods his head. I race to her room and grab her axe. I race out and mount my pony. I gallop towards the edge of Bag End and caught up with mum & Bilbo just as they were about to leave the Shire. "Wait!" I yell and they look up at me.
"Filius" mum says and hugs me.
"I understand that you want to explore the world one last time. But you forgot your axe" I tell her.
"Oh thank you dear" she says.
"I insist you take my pony with you, it'll make the journey easier on you both" I tell her.
"We made our last journey mostly on foot" Uncle Bilbo reminds me.
"You were sixty years younger then" I remind him. "Please be careful out there and be sure to write" I tell them. Mum nods her head and we hug one last time. Before she, Uncle Bilbo and Coal (his pony) left the Shire. I sigh and start to walk back to Bag End. I run into Gandalf along the way.
"Ah Filius, be sure to take good care of Frodo. Make sure he keeps that ring hidden and safe. You both own Bag End now" he tells me.
"I'll take good care of him Gandalf, safe travels" I say. He nods his head and continues on his journey. By the time I get home Frodo is already asleep. I sigh and got ready for bed myself. Calling it a night.
