Chapter 16

"Iris!" I shout. "Please stop. We're supposed to be having a girl's night." I rolled my eyes at her and cover my ears with the cushion, but I could still hear things.

She throws a popcorn at me, "You can't have a girl's night without talking about boys."

I laugh and shake my head, "Seth is the last thing we should be talking about right now."

"No!" she yelled and grab the cushion from me, "I wanna know what's going on with the both of you. Something happened again. I can feel it." Iris held the remote in her hands and pause the movie. We were twenty something minutes in the movie 'Forrest Gump'.

I shake my head denying her claim, "Nothing happened so can you please resume the movie." I said pointing at the Tv.

"Nope, we've watched Forrest Gump over a million times, it can wait." She lifted her bottom and place the remote under it then looked at me smiling. "Now, tell me. What happened with you and Seth at the night of the party?"

I looked at her smiling. "You set that up, didn't you. Leaving me there with him."

"Of course, I did. The guy is perfect for you," she concludes. "Seth is a nice guy and you deserve a nice guy."

I shrug, "I'm not looking for a relationship."

"Then what are you looking for?"

Oh, Iris. If it were that easy.

"Nothing. I'm not looking for anything." I wasn't ready for a serious relationship.

I wasn't ready to put my heart out.

"Seth is perfect for you," she repeated.

"Iris you're forgetting one thing." I pointed out, "He's the enemy. I can't be in any relationship with a district attorney, we will always end in court on the opposite team." It wasn't a risk I could take. I just became partners with one of the biggest law firms in New York and I wasn't going ruin it because of some guy. I worked too hard for this.

"You're back at that." Iris curled her lips.

"Yes, it will always be in the way and that's why I can't be with Seth."

"But you can have Sex with Seth?" she provoked which cause me to roll my eyes.

"I had sex with him twice,"

Iris raised her eyebrows, "So, it's not one time anymore." I mentally slap myself. I didn't mean to tell her about the last time. It wasn't supposed to happen.

"Iris! Can you start back the movie please?" I didn't want to talk about my sexual relationship with Seth.

"Kari!" she mocked. "You guys had sex that night didn't you."

I sigh, she wasn't going to give up. "Yes, we did. Are you happy?"

Iris laughs, "Happy that you're getting laid but not happy that you don't want a relationship with the guy." I knew it was in her best interest to see me in a happy relationship like hers, so I cut her the slacks.

"Iris let's not talk about that. Please."

Iris sighs, "Okay. I'll stop." She reached for the remote under her butt then pressed play but stopped it back. She turns to look at me, "He's a nice guy. Don't break his heart."

  Like I could try.

Seth was a nice guy, I admit but he had his head on his body. I wasn't the type of person who can break a heart. I was the type of person afraid to get my heart broken.

.....................

"Why don't we start from the beginning? Tell me everything you know." I fold my hands and look at Mr. Benjamin. He was wearing a suit, his hair messy and he looked like he wasn't getting any sleep.

He rang his hand through his hair, "I don't know much. I was at home the night when Harrison was killed. I swear I didn't kill him, Ms. Jones." His voice didn't crack or show any signs of that he might be lying. I knew he didn't kill his partner, it's just up to the jury to believe me.

I nod my head, "Mr. Benjamin. I'm going to need more than that, isn't there anyone who could prove that you were at home? Your wife?"

He shakes his head, "No, my wife was out of town. I was alone."

"So, you have no alibi," I state rubbing my hands through my hair. Cases like these were the hardest and it was my first one. All my previous had alibis which made the case way easier to handle.

  He shakes his head, "No."

I look down at my clipboard, "You said you never left your house, how did the murder weapon reach there?"

He looked into my eyes, "Mr. Jones, they found the knife in my backyard anybody could have planted it there." That was true. Which meant the person who murdered Mr. Samuel knew exactly they were doing. It was the same murder who tipped off the police to search Mr. Benjamin's back yard, why else would the police find the weapon so quickly.

I nod, "What's your relationship with Mr. Samuel?"

"He was my best friend." He sigh, "We've been friends since college."

"Did you guy ever had a disagreement?" I needed to get down to the bottom of this. I needed to know there was no way the prosecutor can make it seem that Mr. Benjamin killed Mr. Samuel.

Without hesitation, he answered, "No, never."

  A friendship without arguments.

Hmm, "Did he have any enemies?"

He sighs, "Well, yes. We run a shipping company, of course, we'd have some enemies."

"Can you give me the names of those enemies? I can do some research to see if they had any motive in killing Mr. Samuel." I took up my pen waiting for the names.

"Collin Daniels, he's a real piece of shit, uhm, and there's Dick Raymond." I write down the names on my clipboard. I'll just give Claire to get some information on the names.

Placing down the pen, "What about you, do you have any enemies?" After he was the one being framed for murder.

"A lot." He answered. "You don't get along doing my type of business without a few enemies."

I nod in any business there are always going to be an enemy. Just like Seth was my enemy.

"Can I get their names? All of them." I couldn't leave a single one of them out. He starts telling me the names of persons who he's had disagreements or arguments with over the past months.

"Is there anything else you think I should know?" I needed as much information as I can to prove his innocence.

"Harrison and his wife are getting a divorce. She got pretty violent with him a few weeks before his murder. She came to his office and even through a vase at him."

I tilt my head and him, "Are you saying she could have killed him?"

He shakes his head, "I'm not sure what to think. They loved each other and all of a sudden, a divorce and now he's dead." I wrote down her name on my board, if there was any way she could have killed her husband and frame Mr. Benjamin for it I had to know.

"Do you any idea why they were divorcing?"

"No, but I know she asked him for the divorce." I nod my head. I could use that information in court to draw the attention off him. "Did you know why she asked him for the divorce?"

He shakes his head, "No." then bent his head.

I offered him a smile even though he wasn't looking, "Don't worry. I'll prove that you're innocent."

He lifts his head and looks at me, "I don't have an alibi, they found the murder weapon at my house. I'm the only suspect."

"That's it Mr. Benjamin. A suspect. Your finger prints weren't on the knife." An idea came in my head, "Mr. Benjamin, would It be okay if I come to your house?"

He raised his eyebrows confused so to stop his worry I respond, "I want to see the types of knife you use. If I can get pictures of your house knives, then I can compare it with the murder weapon."

He smiled for the first time since he came in my office, "That's a great idea."

"Yea, as your lawyer I have to think out of the box." I agreed.

"Well, let's go to my place." He said standing from the chair.

I took up my clipboard and my hand bag, "Let's go to your place."

.......

I pressed the doorbell of the cottage waiting for an answer. The door opened showing a blond middle age woman. I offered a smile and pushed hands out, "I'm Karishma Jones. I'm Mr. Benjamin's lawyer."

She frowned when she heard Benjamin's name but took my hands and shake it anyways. "What do you want?"

"Well, first I'd like to give your family my condolences." She nods but reminded silent. I could tell from her demeanour she didn't want me here, "I just have one question for you."

She shrugs for me to go on, "You and your husband were in the process of a divorce, right?"

   She nods, "Yes, we were."

"Do you mind telling me why you guys were getting a divorce?"

She let out a frustrated sigh, "He was cheating on me."

I gave her a sad look. "That's all I wanted to ask you. I'm so sorry for your lost." I turned and walked back in the direction of my car.

Harrison Samuel's wife had a motive of killing him. He was cheating on her. I could easily pin the murder on her as a jealous wife.

I start the engine of my car, my next stop was the precinct. If I could get a look at the murder weapon and compare it to Mr. Benjamin's kitchen knives. If they didn't match, then that could easily draw the attention off him.

I smiled proudly at myself. I was close to proving that Mr. Benjamin didn't kill Harrison Samuels. I was so close to winning the case against Seth. I couldn't let him win. If I sack with this case Seth will push it in my face. I can't allow that.

  I can't let him win.

  He wasn't going to win.
