Chapter 15
I bang my head on my desk three times. I had so much case files to go through it's exhausting. I didn't even know where to begin. My telephone rang, so I lifted my head and I took it up, "Yes, Claire."
"Ms. Webb is here. She says it's very important." I sighed, Carla Webb was something else, she always had someone that she needed to sue or someone that she needed to divorce.
"Send her in." I place back the phone on it's stand and sat up straight. No matter tired I am, I tried to look as professional as possible.
The door pushed opened, the woman in her early fifties became visible. I noticed the change of color of her hair. The last time she was here, she had a few strains of grey in her brown hair but now her hair was black, and the signs of old-age was no longer visible.
I push my chair back and stand walking to the side of my desk. She walked in my arms and hugged me, "How is my favorite lawyer?"
I was her only lawyer. No matter who much money the woman had no one wanted to take the struggle that came with her. I was a young lawyer when I took her in my wings and she stayed there, still haven't matured yet.
I smile when she releases me from the hug, "I'm okay. How is my favorite client?" I didn't have a favorite client. I just said that to make her feel good.
"Well apart from the fact that one of my workers are trying to sue me, I'm perfect." Carla was Australian born and had move to American when she was twelve but even in her fifties she still carried a little of the accent.
"So, the table has turned." I state.
"Apparently so." She said without a care.
I shake my head and went back to my seat, "What is he/she suing you for?"
"Stress in the worked place." She replied, "Can you believe it? The bitch said I worked her so hard she lost her baby and now she wants to sue me."
I scratch the back of my head and raised my brows, "Did you know that she pregnant?"
"No," Carla shakes her head, "If I did, I would have fired her."
I nod, "I see. Well there is not much we can do at the moment. We can arrange a meeting with her lawyer and discuss the terms."
"Is it going to go to court?" Not that Carla had any problem with the courtroom. I am certain that all the judges knew her.
"It depends on her claims."
Carla nods, "Oh, well good. Guess what?" Guess what was another one of Carla games when she game to my office.
"Your son has a girl friend?" I just said the first thing that came from my mouth.
"No." she said with a frown then brushed it off, "Henry doesn't want to propose to me. He said that he grew up strict catholic and all different types of rubbish. He says he can't marry a woman he has been divorced, especially me since I've divorced three times. Don't you think that's rubbish?"
I light nod my head, not that I was agreeing with her statement but just to make her feel better. I didn't understand the situation one bit. Henry claimed to be so holy, yet he is sleeping with her.
"Why do you even want to marry him? The guy has a huge forehead." He did and he wasn't even attractive.
She shrugs, "He's good in bed."
I nod my head. "I see. What does Rick think about all this?" Rick was Carla's nineteen-year-old son and her only child.
"Rick, I don't know. He has three steps fathers and he's gotten use to it..." before she could continue he phone rang. She lift her hands to me to excuse herself, "Yes. No...for God's sake can't I leave the place for ten minutes." He hissed her teeth and hang up the phone. She stood and offered me a smile, "Sorry, dear. I have to get going." she blows me and kissed and walked out of my office. Carla Webb was married to three millionaires, none of her marriage lasting more than two years. She started dating Henry before her last divorced came through.
I don't really know the exact words to describe her so I'm just gonna call her a reck for now.
I ran my hands through my hair and look down at the law suit paper she left on my desk. I pushed it aside and stand. I need to get some fresh air. I walked out of my office, Claire was at her desk like usual, "Hey, I'll be out few minutes."
She nods then continued her work. I start walking to elevator when I heard my name being called. I turn my head and look. Bennett, an associate to the firm started walking over to me. I offered him a small smile, "Hey, Bennett. You okay?"
He smiles and his blue eyes glisten, "Not as good as you."
"I'm exhausted, I'm actually heading for some coffee. Do you want to come?" Since he seemed down, it was the least I could do.
He smiled. "That would be great. Thank you."
I nod my head, "Thank you for coming to keep my company." I continued walking beside me until we reached the elevator.
"After you," he smiled allowing me to enter the elevator.
When the doors of the elevator or shut, I turn to him. "Why so blue?"
"Is it that obvious?" he asked.
I nod. Under his eyes were dark, either from a lack of sleep or crying but he didn't look happy even though he was smiling. "Maria asked me for a divorced."
I looked over at him not quite sure what to say. I lift my hands to his back. "I'm so sorry to hear. If you need someone to talk to you know where my office is."
He smiled and shake his head, "It's funny. I thought we would be happier if we moved here and she told me she wasn't and instead of trying to work it out she asked for a divorce."
I rub his back, "It's okay."
He shakes his head, "It's not. Maria wants to go back to Ohio and I want to stay. Our little Briana will be torn into pieces."
I sigh, I didn't have much experience with divorce, but I know it's never good on a child.
The elevator door opened, and we walked out. "Is there anyway you can try and save the marriage?" I looked at him with concern in my eyes.
He shakes his head, "No, she wants to leave. She makes it known, she shouts it in my ears. She doesn't love anymore. I can see it in her eyes."
I haven't had my dose of what love felt like yet but seeing other persons around with it made me wonder, is it something I need? What's so good about love? I had Iris and Brandon who live each other to death and my parents, Uncle Gideon; they were all great experiences but then I see people like Carla and Bennett. I saw what love did to them. Is it worth taking a risk at love if it's not 100% guaranteed that you'll be happy?
"I don't know what to say Bennett." I told him the truth instead of trying to find ways to comfort him.
"Don't say anything. Just be a friend." I smile up at him. I could be his friend.
We enter the café laughing at one of his family jokes. I walked in the line, "Coffee is on me."
"Are you sure?"
I nod, "I'm technically your boss, so yes. I'm sure." I lifted my head up at the menu then turn to Bennett, "What do you want?"
"Just a black coffee, no sugar, no milk." He answered.
I went to the cashier when it was my turn and gave her the orders. A few minutes later we collect the coffees and start looking for a cheer.
"You can sit with me," I turn in direction of the voice. Seth down at a table by himself. He was in a suit and had a coffee laying in front of him.
I looked over at Bennett for confirmation and he nod, "Yea, we're all lawyers aren't we." I was really hoping for him to say no but he did the opposite and start walking towards Seth.
"How are you doing, Mr. Parker?" Bennett ask Seth. Seth looked over at me and smile, "Good now that I see this beauty right here."
I rolled my eyes and walk over to the table.
"You guys know each other?" Bennett asked as he takes the seat in front of Seth leaving me with the one beside him. I took a seat at the chair but try to avoid direct eye contact with him.
Seth looked at Bennett and smile, "Yes, Kari and I go walk back. Junior-High to be exact and High."
"Oh, wow. That's good."
I shake my head, "Bennett how did you meet Seth?" I asked wanting to change the topic from me.
"Oh, you know. In court recently. He was the prosecutor for one of my clients."
"I won the case." Seth said proudly which made me look at him.
I took a sip of my coffee then turn to Seth, "Well, Mr. Parker not because you won against Bennett means you'll win against me."
Bennett eyes widen, "You guys are on a case."
"Yes," we said simultaneously.
"He's the prosecutor for my case which makes him the enemy."
Bennett laughs and shakes his head. "You follow those things. Let me tell this, kids, I've been a lawyer for over 15 years and some of my best friends are district attorney. I don't mess with their work, they don't mess with mine. You don't have to be enemies because you're on different sides, you just have to know how to control yourselves."
Seth nods, agreeing with Bennett's statement. "I tell her this, she doesn't listen. Stubborn is what she is." He agrees with a smirk. Soon after I felt his hands on my thigh.
I flashed him the look, but he continues smiling at Bennett. "Mr. Graham, her best friend is with my best friend and cousin but all she does is fight me like plague."
I rolled my eyes. I didn't fight him like plague.
I didn't fight him at all.
My body gave into his demands as soon as he touches it.
I couldn't fight him.
"All I want to do is be friends with her, yet she makes it so difficult." I rolled my eyes at his words. I don't want game he was playing but it wasn't working with me.
If all he wanted was to be my friend, then he wouldn't have had sex with me.
I know and even the world know that Seth only wanted the same thing from me that I wanted from him and that was Sex.
Just Sex.
