Everything Shines so Much Brighter
A/N: Hey! This is my one shot for VivaLaPotter for wining a subcategory in my contest. and its also my entry in her contest. Killing two birds with one stone(:
So, about the oneshot. Well, as we all know, Lee gets dumped by Meghan in 'I Trusted You'. I thought that he should have some love, so I created a charater that was simply perfect for him. Lee meet your one true love, Gemma Dawson(:
Fingertips, northern lights, tracing colors right through the sky
Underneath a lullaby I never felt as blissful as I do here
And my heart sings in a world so incredible
And everything shines much brighter
Cider Sky, Northern Lights
Everytime I closed my eyes, I wished that Fred would look at me. I mean, we had sat next to each other in Herbology for the last six and a half years. I am Gemma Dawson. I’m in the same house as him! He should’ve known who I was, but that didn’t stop him from looking at me like a psycho when I asked if he had a date to the Yule Ball. He said that he didn’t but he was going to ask someone before running off without another word. I didn’t know why I even liked him all that much. He was never really worth my time. Perhaps that Payton he always talked about did deserve him, but then I heard a rumor that he had screwed that up. So, I didn’t know what to believe.
I decided to go to the Yule Ball stag. I know, right? It’s practically unheard of for a girl to go stag, especially if it’s not with another girl. I didn’t have many friends. Just Neville, and he already had a date. He brought Fred’s younger sister, Ginny. Ginny was my only girlfriend, and that made me quite sad to think about. I needed girls my own age that I could talk to. I didn’t get along with the other girls in my house. Is it just me, or do Gryffindors keep in tight clicks of three? And how is it that I didn’t end up in one of those trios?
I had wondered outside when I was too upset to watch all the couples dance. Fred had been standing and talking to his twin and Lee Jordan, who seemed a bit lost. I walked right passed them to get outside. All of a sudden, I had felt really hot because of all the people and needed to get some fresh air. It usually happened when I was upset or panicky.
I soon realized that I wasn’t the only one who had the notion to go outside. The carriage that I just happened to choose to sit by was rocking a bit and the windows were steamed up a little. I sure hoped that they weren’t doing the dirty as I got up and walked a little farther away from the happy couple. I heard footsteps and looked over to see Lee had walked outside as well and called for someone named Meghan. Meghan who? I wondered…
She then climbed out of the carriage that was all steamy. Nice. Meghan Grant, the Hufflepuff, had to of attended the ball with Lee and was with someone else in that carriage. Naughty, naughty Meghan. A smirk played on my lips as I watched the scene.
“I’m right here, Lee,” the blonde said to him.
“Oh, hey, Meg,” he said when he spotted her. “What are you doing out here?”
“Oh, I just wanted some fresh air,” Liar, I thought. “I needed to think…” Liar, liar pants on fire.
Lee just nodded as the air between them got awkard. I then felt awkward by just being there, but I just couldn’t get up and walk back into the hall. That would mean that I had to walk passed those two…who probably didn’t want anyone to overhear their conversation. So, I just stayed squatted behind the carriage, where I had retreated when I was about to walk in that direction.
“Lee,” she said slowly, “I just don’t think things are going to work out for us. I really like you, and you are amazing, but I don’t really think that we’re meant for each other.”
“I understand,” Lee said, putting his hands in his pockets and shrugging.
“You-you understand?” she repeated. It looked as if she wasn’t believing what she was hearing. I just wanted to slap her. Why would you dig a hole for yourself when you were already in one with the guy that was in the carriage?
“Sure,” he said, nodding. “If it isn’t working out, I don’t want to argue.”
“Wow,” she said, looking as if in shock.
“Well, I had a good time anyways, Megs,” said Lee, smiling at her. He seemed too good for her. If he was really like that all the time, she didn’t deserve him if she was snogging someone else in a carriage while having attended the dance with him.
“I did too,” she said, looking as if she was about to start sobbing. Why cry? You’re the one breaking up with him! But I really didn’t know the situation. It wasn’t my place to say so. Come to think of it, my place really wasn’t there either. Eavesdropping on their…breakup. I’m such a horrible person.
“Anytime,” he said, saluting her, which caused me to giggle.
“Lee?” she called, stopping him. What more could she possibly want?
“Yeah?” he answered her.
“Do you…want,” she said uncomfortably and grabbed at her wrist, which I was guessing was a bracelet of some kind that he had given her.
“No, you keep it.”
“Thanks, Lee.”
“No problem,” he said before walking into the castle.
How I so badly wanted to just follow him back into the castle, but alas, Meghan was still there. She opened the door to the carriage she had been in with lover boy to reveal none other than Cedric Diggory. Meghan Grant had been snogging Cedric Diggory? I couldn’t believe it. I had heard that Cedric had a thing for Cho Chang, but obviously, that rumor is just hearsay. I just silently waited as they decided to go back to Cedric’s room. That’s when I went to make a mad dash for the castle, but I almost ran into someone who was standing right next to the carriage. It was Lee with a huge smirk on his face.
“Enjoy the show?” he asked.
I instantly flushed bright red. How had he had known I was there? “I didn’t mean to-“
“Don’t worry about it. Gemma, seriously, I know that you wouldn’t eavesdrop on someone on purpose. You’re too polite for that,” he laughed.
I shrugged. “You know who I am?”
He laughed some more. “Of course I know who you are. You’ve only sat across from me in Herbology for the past six and a half years. Its good having you sit across from me. At least I don’t have to look at something ugly for the whole double period.”
I gulped. He thought I was beautiful? That was certainly news to me. No one had ever told me that I was even remotely pretty. It was nice though, hearing it from him. He was a good guy.
I bit my lip. “I should’ve remembered that.”
“It’s no problem. Most people don’t remember me anyway,” he shrugged.
“Well,” I took in a deep breath. “I should probably get back inside.”
“Got a hot date to get back to, eh?”
I shook my head. “Oh, goodness no. I don’t have a date.”
“You came stag, did you? That’s cute,” he smirked some more as he looked me over. “Why did you come alone?”
“Because Fred declined my offer, and Neville already had a date,” I shrugged, not wanting to talk about it.
He chuckled. “Yes, Fred can be a dick at times, but we all love him.”
“Well,” I said once again. “I should get back inside anyway.” And I started towards the castle, hoping to leave all my embarrassment behind me. I also hoped that he would forget all about me.
“Wait,” he called, which caused me to stop and turn slowly back to face him. “Don’t go. I just want someone to talk to. I’m sorry if I said anything that offended you. Please stay with me?”
No matter what thoughts ran through my head, I couldn’t say no to him, especially since he was just dumped. So, I nodded and walked back over to him. It was really quite sad to see that he wanted to talk to someone he didn’t even know all that well. Well, at least there was one good thing about it, I might actually have a third friend. That would be good.
“Do you want to dance?” he asked with a smirk.
I shrugged. “Sure.”
He pulled me to him and wrapped his hands around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck and looked up into dark eyes. I couldn’t help but think that they were probably the most beautiful set of eyes I had ever seen as the soft music from inside floating out as we started to sway to it.
“Just a warning,” I smirked. “I’m a horrible dancer.”
He laughed. “No worries, I’m a brilliant one.”
I rolled my eyes. “Modest much?”
“I’m only joking,” he grinned. “I’m awful too.”
I smiled at his goofiness. “Well, at least we can be awful together.”
He lost his smile. “Whoa, déjà vu.”
I scrunched my eyebrows up at him. “How so?”
“I had just about the same conversation with Meghan earlier,” he chuckled. “But that was earlier. I shouldn’t be thinking of her when I’m here with you.”
“No, it’s okay. You two just got out of a relationship. It’s understandable,” I tried to sooth him, but it wasn’t working.
He shook his head. “If you could even call it a relationship. I mean, we weren’t really official but it sure seemed like it was headed there. I just wish I had never barked up that tree. I knew she had just broken up with Cedric, and I knew that she would go running back to him eventually, but I had to try, right?”
I nodded. “You might have regretted it even more if you didn’t.”
I don’t know if it was the melody of the music or if it was the glowing of the lights that made everything glow, but I was feeling blissful. I had never felt so completely at ease with ease with someone. It felt almost right that he was holding me so close, much too close. He licked his lips and swallowed. Was he feeling it too?
“Gemma,” he breathed my name. “I don’t know if it’s the music or the glow of the lights, but you make everything shine so much brighter. I never felt so…”
“Right,” I finished his sentence as his lips crashed down onto mine.
My heart was singing. It was singing in a world that was so incredible. The moment was incredible. The kiss was incredible. Lee was incredible. He was a good person, a person who made me see the good that someone else could be. Someone that could be more than a friend, someone that could make my heart sing for the first time. He pulled away quickly, much to my disappointment. He looked me in the eyes for a moment before telling me something that no girl would want to hear after just being kissed.
“I can’t do this,” he said backing away. “I’m so sorry.”
I watched him as he ran up to the castle, leaving me a confused little girl. I wanted to cry, but how could I? I barely knew him. Yes, we had been school mates for the past six and a half years, but that didn’t mean that I knew him enough to kiss him the first time that we had actually talked. I decided to just to make my own way up to the tower without another thought.

Every time I closed my eyes, I can touch the colors around me. Everything that I thought was impossible had happened to me…a week before. I had never thought that I would get my first kiss, but I did. I never thought that I would find someone to have a perfect first kiss with, but I did. After he ran off, I hadn’t seen him except in Herbology, where he pointedly didn’t look at me. Why couldn’t he do it? Why couldn’t he be with me?
Instead of hanging with everyone on New Year’s, I was hanging with the stars and the moon. It was rather lonely out on the grounds with snow everywhere, but at least the cold helped me cope with the fact that I was never going to get a real boyfriend. I had been imagining in my head that Lee would show up before midnight just so I could get a good luck kiss when the clock did strike twelve, but according to my watch it was just minutes before hand. I wasn’t living in a fairytale world, and I needed to accept that.
“What are you doing out here?” came a voice from behind me. “Shouldn’t you be inside, celebrating with everyone else.”
“Normally I would, but-“ I trailed off when I turned and saw Lee standing with his hands in his pockets. “What are you doing out here?”
He shrugged. “I came to be alone, but that’s obviously not happening.”
“Well,” I sighed. “I can make that happen.” And I started to walk up to the castle, but he caught me my elbow.
“Wait, don’t go,” he said as I looked up at him. “I don’t want you to go. I really need to apologize for what I did at the ball. I just couldn’t be with you until I figured things out. I needed it to be fair for you, Gemma. And you know what?”
I swallowed hard. “What?”
“You have been the only one on my mind since,” he confessed and smiled. “You’re like the Northen Lights, only I can feel you, and everything burns much brighter. I’m happier. I feel lighter. I wanna fly into this beautiful life, Gemma,” he paused and pulled me to him, “and I think it’d be nice with you.”
My heart sang once more. I couldn’t believe that he just told me that. “Really? You want to give it a try?”
He nodded. “I want to give it more of a try,” he smirked. “Are you willing?”
I smirked as well. “I’m more than willing.”
