Can I Tell You a Wonderful Thing?

Daydreaming in the window with the sunbeams elluminating her pale face, Gideon Weasley was more like her mother with every passing year. Nargels could penetrate her mind, and she wouldn’t even notice for she doesn’t use it often. Cloudy thoughts and upside down Quibblers were what you could call her hobbies, but she secretly liked to play pranks on people. No one ever knew who sent Fred Weasley, her cousin, that toilet seat from Hogwarts. Well, he had asked for it.

No one would’ve ever suspected that her daydreaming was because of a boy that day. Her mother, Luna, came into her room with a lopsided smile upon her face. She knew all too well that her daughter was an exact replica of her, except for her eyes. Gideon’s eyes were dark brown just like her father’s.

“Giddy, have you packed for Hogwarts yet?” Luna asked as she sat down on her daughter’s bed.

Gideon slowly took her eyes from whatever she had been looking at and focused them on her mother. “Yes, mother. I just hope that my things don’t get stolen again.”

“All things have a way of finding their way back to you,” Luna smiled at her daughter. “So, have the nargels got you today?”

Gideon smiled and shook her head. “No, but cupid just might have.”

Her mother lost her smile. “You were thinking about a boy?”

“Yes, mother,” she paused. “Can you tell me about how you met dad? I mean, you hardly ever talk about him, and I know nothing about him except for what Uncle George tells me. I’d like to hear your guys’ love story. Please?”

Luna sighed but nodded. “I’m only going to tell you this because terrible things can happen, Giddy. Life is not all about daydreaming and nargels. It can tear you right out of that rut before you can even say nargels. You will never expect it coming. I know I sure didn’t…”

I was sitting on the ground by the Black lake one spring afternoon, reading the Quibbler with my 3-D glasses that they come with. No one had ever came out to sit with me in all the time I had been to Hogwarts. It was out of the normal, especially for a boy, to come and share the afternoon with me, but Fred Weasley was no ordinary boy. He liked to sit with me and even talk to me. But that afternoon in particular, I saw something different in his eyes. He kept looking up at me, which gave me butterflies in my stomach. I didn’t think that I could handle it much longer, so I said something.

“Fred,” I said, taking in a deep breath. “Can I tell you a wonderful thing? I can’t help but notice you’re staring at me. I know I shouldn’t say this, but I really believe I can tell by your eyes that you’re in love with me.”

“You just came right out and said that?” Gideon couldn’t help but feel that her mother was actually pretty brave.

Luna nodded. “Yes, I did. I was so nervous about it as well, but I couldn’t help but ask him. I mean, I had only seen people give those kinds of looks to people that they were in love with. So, I hoped that I was right. Now, hush and I’ll continue…”

“You think I’m in love with you?” Fred asked me, his face starting to blush.

I nodded. “Eyes can give away all the feelings someone feels. Your eyes say nothing but love.”

He looked at me and made my heart stop beating for just a few moments. “Well, you’re right. I think you’re the tops, Luna. Coming out here and sitting with you these past few days has been bliss. You’re not like other girls.”

I giggled. “I knew that last bit. Most girls don’t read the Quibbler.”

“And if they did, they wouldn’t read it in public,” he laughed and so did I. “Why haven’t we talked before this. I think we would’ve had a right good time.”

I nodded. “I think we would’ve.”

“I’ll be gone tomorrow. We’re planning on pranking Umbridge one last time before completely ditching school,” he said, looking at the ground. “I didn’t want to leave without you knowing first though.”

I nodded as I tried to hold back the tears that threatened to fall. I knew that I couldn’t cry in front of him. We had only known each other for about two weeks, if even that.

“Just don’t let the nargels take me from your memory, and you’ll be just fine,” I smiled at him.

He laughed. Gosh, I loved his laugh. “I promise. I also promise to owl you every chance that I get. What do you say to that?”

“I say that’s a wonderful thing.” And I couldn’t stop smiling when he quickly kissed me on the lips before hurrying off back to the castle.

Gideon smiled at how her mother looked pleasantly out in space. Her mother really did love her father, she thought as continued to look at her. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized that Luna had said that terrible things happen. What happened to her father? Why wasn’t he around then?

“Mum,” Gideon got her mom’s attention. “How did you know you were going to have me?”

She felt that she needed to steer clear of that conversation just yet. Obviously, her mother was heartbroken by what had happened, so keeping things in chronological order seemed to be the best route for the moment.

Luna looked over at her daughter, who had the same blonde hair and pale complexion that she did. “Oh, Giddy. After that day, everything just fell into place. I know that we were a tad bit young to be thinking about marriage, but I knew that I loved your father very much. The day I found out I was pregnant, I was scared to death. I told your grandfather right away, and he said that he would help me in any way possible. He was shocked at first, but I was only sixteen and the Great War was quickly approaching…”

I found Fred just outside the Burrow. He smiled at me like I had just granted his only wish in the world…or nargels had just entered his brain. I choose to believe the first though. I told him I had very big news to share with him, and he said he did as well. He took me down the road a bit next to a small brook. When we stopped, I took a deep breath and face him. I knew I had to do it quickly or I would never do it at all.

“I’m pregnant,” and I said it as fast since I was nervous.

Fred paused for a moment. For a split second, I thought that he hadn’t understood what I had said, so I opened my mouth to say it again, but his finger rose to my lips. He was still all smiles and reached into his pocket. I knew that it was horrible. We were having a baby. He was four years older than me. I wasn’t even of age yet. But that didn’t seem to change his facial expression.

“Girl, can I tell you a wonderful thing? I made you a present with paper and string,” he pulled out a folded up piece of paper that seemed to contain something inside. “Hold out your hand,” he smirked as I did as I was told.

My left hand was spread out as he pulled string from the top of the folded inside of the paper. He tied to top to my ring finger. The rest of the string was inside of the piece of parchment still. I was so nervous. I knew that he was doing something important. And it made me feel a whole lot better about us.

“Muggles say that if you tie a piece of string to your finger that you’ll remember something important. Well, Lu, I don’t want you to forget this day,” He then pulled backwards on the paper and the string continued to grow from it. “Ever.”

He then abruptly stopped and held up the piece of parchment. Something round and sparkiling fell from the paper and travled down the sting to my finger. Stopping at my fingertips, I realized that it was a ring. Tears pricked my eyes as he walked back over to me and dropped down to one knee.

“Luna Lovegood,” he said, pushing the ring the rest of the way onto my finger. “Will you marry me?”

I nodded and kissed him before he could even stand up.

“Was dad that spontaneous all the time?” Gideon asked, a wide smile upon her face.

Luna nodded. “There was never a dull moment when he was around,” she sighed dreamily. “He knew exactly how to make me smile, how to make me swoon – unless it was just a coisidence that nargels fogged my brain.”

The girl laughed. “I want to marry a man like dad.”

The small smile faded from Luna’s face.

“You said that terrible things happen,” Gideon said slowly, looking directly into her mother’s eyes. “What happened to dad that was so terrible?”

“I try not to dwell on it too much,” Luna closed her eyes. “He was murdered. I don’t know how, but it was during the Great War against Voldemort…”

I had just finished yelling at Harry Potter to look for Rowena Ravenclaw’s daughter. She would know where the final piece to defeating Voldemort would be. I knew that it wasn’t safe to stay in the castle, especially since I was pregnant with you, Giddy. So, I went in search for my fiancé. Once I had him, we could run away from the battle and keep you safe.

I had no such luck finding him. It was too much of a task with all the spells and death eaters throwing spells at me. I headed straight for the Great Hall, where I had seen Aunt Ginny disappear to some time before. Perhaps she found him or knew where he was. I found that she was with the whole Weasley clan, huddled in a corner.

“Ginny!” I called, and when she turned, her face was tear streaked.

“Luna,” she shook her head. “I’m so, so sorry.”

“What is it?” I asked, my heart skipping a beat.

“Fred,” she merely mumbled before stepping out of my way and revealing your father’s body to me.

My heart stopped. My whole world stopped. There was no one else as I approached the remains of what used to be my love. My hands reached out and touched his face before I broke down in sobs. My love was gone. My life was gone. The one man who seemed to be indestructible was no longer there to hold me, to help me raise our child. I was alone. There was no one else for me in the world. I could never love anyone like I loved Fred Gideon Weasley.

“That was the day that I swore that I would never allow myself to love another,” Luna wiped away some tears. “Giddy, I don’t want you to hurt as much as I did, as I still do. Life isn’t fair, and it won’t get easier. So, please, I beg of you. Don’t fall in love. It hurts way too much in the end.”

Gideon shook her head. “Mum, you took that risk. You knew that everyone dies eventually, so you put yourself out there to be hurt. You’re right that it won’t get much easier, but I believe that if you don’t ever put yourself out there, you will regret it. You will never know true love,” she sighed and took her mother’s hand in her own. “You’ve known true love, and yes, you will never replace dad, but don’t you get lonely?”

She nodded. “I do get a tad bit lonely.”

“Then get back out there,” she let go of her mum’s hand and pulled her into a hug.

“When did you get so smart?” Luna asked, laughing into her daughter’s hair.

Gideon shrugged. “Can I tell you something wonderful?” she whispered into her mother’s ear.

Luna pulled back some so she could see her daughter’s lovely face and nodded.

“He still loves you.”
