Kisses From Death
IT WAS JUST as difficult as one could imagine how breaking into Heaven would be like-especially one that was filled with corrupted angels that wished to wage war and create chaos. There were guards patrolling the area, their long feathery wings dragging on the ground behind them with each step they took. Armed with sharp spears of swords, I could only thank our luck that Heaven was filled with a cloud-like mist that ended just below our knees. When we ducked low enough, we would be covered by it and could remain slightly incognito.
The next batch of angelic soldiers marched on by, completely oblivious to the fact that there were four enemy personnel tucked away in a bush that covered them from plain view. I watched with my breath clogged in my throat as they turned a corner and disappeared behind a large hut.
"Where to now?" I turned to ask Fabian, whose eyes were squinted and narrowed due to the stinging mist. He straightened up his posture a little, peering outside out hideout.
"A right turn after that hut right there. That should be Lucifer's old office if I remember correctly." He pointed to a white-colored little cottage that was surrounded by bright red peonies.
"Are you sure he is still using the same office as before?" Minnie asked, wrinkling her nose. "It's been a few thousand years since he last set foot in Heaven. What are the odds that he would pick the same dusty enclosure?"
"Lucifer is a sucker for his little mementos. He had a lot of weird collectibles hidden away in his office and I bet he is planning to use them to his advantage. He would not let them out of his sight." Fabian answered with a deadpan before waving, beckoning us to follow him. "Quickly. We should be clear for the next few minutes, judging by their shift patterns."
Without another moment's worth of hesitation, Fabian sprinted over to the hut he had just pointed out, his body darting through the area like a bullet in the dark. He easily got to the other side in a matter of seconds, darting to a squat before assessing his surroundings. Once he deemed the situation clear, he waved at us again to signal us to come over.
I gritted my teeth in determination before sprinting out of our hiding spot, rushing over to where Fabian was with both Dimitri and Minnie right behind me. Since Fabian was at the front leading the way, Dimitri offered to walk last so as to stand on guard in case someone decided to attack us from behind. That arrangement alone made me a little less jumpy. Just a little.
"Shit," Dimitri muttered under his breath. His bright silver eyes darted about, trained on something where we were just at. When I followed his line of gaze, I couldn't help but curse a little myself.
Two other angels had appeared, this time different ones than the one that had just walked past. They stood where we were just hiding at, poking about the bush with raised voices. Needless to say, our presence had just been revealed since the two angels were starting to gather some attention.
"Fabian, bring Addison and Minnie safely over and I swear to God-"
"Relax, brother. I know what I am doing. Take care of yourself." Fabian smoothly cut Dimitri's words short, a silent understanding passed between the two of them as I fidgeted in my spot. I watched as Dimitri removed the brown sling bag that he wore across his shoulders, placing it gently into my hands wordlessly. I could feel the outlines of the golden chalice which made me purse my lips.
Dimitri smiled at Fabian's words, a mischievous glint lighting up in his bright irises as he grinned. Turning over to me, he pressed a chaste kiss to my forehead before withdrawing. "Don't get killed," he said with a smile before pulling out a small switchblade from his pockets.
"Can't," I shrugged with a smile of my own. "I've been told that I am already dead."
The handsome spirit took my response with a silent chuckle, sending a wink my way before he slunk back into the mist. His body disappeared through the thick white clouds but within seconds, I could already hear the screams of the angels as a few of their bodies toppled.
"Come on." With a tug on the sleeves of my top, Fabian was urging us to go again. "Your prince is going to buy us some time. Lucifer isn't too far away now."
I pursed my lips, pulling the strap of the bag over my neck. Both Minnie and I followed Fabian through the rest of Heaven. As we walked, ducking behind corners and making sharp turns as indiscreetly as possible, I couldn't help but frown as I looked up to the sky. The sun was positioned way past noon, slanting over to the west side dangerously as a new plane of colors dyed the celestial sky. Although I did not have an exact time now, I knew that the fifth sunset was near and with it my demise.
"You won't happen to know the time, Fabian?" I asked, squatting down low and pressing my back against the walls of a hut as a few other angels ran towards the direction of where we came from.
At my words, Fabian's eyebrows crumpled. He took a quick glance at the sky before darting over to examine his watch, all this while his frown deepening even further.
"It isn't good, Addison. You have less than a quarter of a day's time." There it was. His words immediately sent a chill down my spine as I clenched my hands into fists, determined to end it all as soon as possible.
I took in a deep breath, attempting to remain as calm as I should be in such a situation before clearing my throat to mask my nervousness. "Then we better move quick or this will all be for nothing."
Alas, words remain as words until something was done to alter that. As soon as I spoke, a yell came from behind us, causing all three of us to instinctively turn back. A group of angels had spotted us and they were close for comfort. They pointed in our direction, weapons in hand as they charged full speed towards us.
Since we were already spotted, Fabian must not have bothered about hiding anymore for he stood up, pushing both Minnie and me behind his body before he dug into his satchel, retrieving three similar daggers. Careful to not slice us, Fabian handed us the blades before pressing two small glass test tubes into my palm, one empty and one filled with clear liquid. He held his own weapon tightly in his hands as he turned to look at the angels, most likely calculating the time he had left to spare.
"Lucifer's hut is straight down from here, the third one counting from the next. You won't miss it. Take these to protect yourself. I'll regroup with you guys once this is over. Be careful, the both of you. Now go!"
We took off running immediately, sharp blade in hand and fear fueling our strength. Just like before, the clash of steel reverberated through the air, signaling to me that Fabian was too caught up in a battle against the angels to lead the way. We were now alone in the foreign enemy territory, running for our lives in more ways than one.
I did not dare to look back. Instead, I fixated myself on the task at hand, pouring every ounce of concentration into getting the hell away from the fight. The first hut zoomed past us, then the second, and in no time, we were at the third.
Fabian was right; there was no possible way to miss the hut.
Lucifer definitely loved to flaunt his assets. The hut, unlike the others, was not made of wood and straw nor bricks. It was made with pure shimmering gold that caught the rays of the sun, dazzling with the might of a thousand diamonds and it looked every bit as intimidating as it was over the top.
I turned to look at Minnie, completely silent as she nodded once. Her face was contorted with harsh determination, lips pressed into a thin line and bold red hair a complete mess. Before I could even touch the doorknob that would have led us inside, however, I was stopped by a set of footsteps and a voice that chilled my blood.
"I could've sworn that I left you somewhere in a jail cell like your almost-to-be husband had done with me."
I did not hesitate for a single second. Immediately, I swung my dominant hand, which held the blade, out, swiping across Lucifer's - or Lucius's since the devil had possessed the latter angel - face. He must not have expected my sudden movement for he had not dodged in time, the steel blade slicing a thin line on the bridge of his nose.
Lucifer cursed once, his hand reaching up to dab the small wound before examining the golden blood on his finger. He reached behind him with a growl and soon brandished his own weapon-a thirty-inch sword that had a menacing golden handle. He swiped at the air in one swift movement, the blade missing my hair by a few millimeters as I jumped out of the way, pushing Minnie down in the process.
"When someone leaves you in a jail cell to rot next time, darling Addison, do remember to actually stay there!"
With another swipe, I brought my arm up to block the blow with my dagger. The sound of blades clashing made my hair stand in fear, goosebumps rising as I kicked at Lucifer's leg, causing him to stumble back. Taking his moment of disorientation, I looked over at Minnie just as she caught my eye, nodding as a silent understanding was passed between the both of us.
She took a step forward just as I dug through the pockets of my jeans for the test tube that Fabian had handed me. Slicing neatly through the air with as much grace as what was possible, Minnie managed to cut a line across Lucifer's forearm as more blood dripped from the wound. I dived down to the ground, holding the test tube out with my breath held as a single golden drop of blood fell inside. As it did, I grinned, capping the test tube with the cork that came with it before shoving it into the bag that Dimitri gave me.
The next few seconds passed by in a blur. I recalled hearing a scream, Minnie's voice, in fact, before being pushed off my balance and tumbling onto my sides. I rolled a few feet away due to the force, my eyes squeezed shut as I protected my head with my hands. The rough soil spared no effort in decorating me with fresh cuts and bruises before I slowly tumbled to a stop.
Then, I thought I could smell the scent of blood. It was much stronger and distinguished than what Lucifer's blood had smelt of which made me look up alarmingly. What met my sight made my stomach churn, my eyes widening with horror. Tears stung my eyes as I screamed out, holding a hand to my lips in trepidation and the other out in the direction of my friend.
Laid on the ground was Minnie, her eyes glazed wide open, lips parted from each other and head falling limply. Her right hand was stretched out toward me, most likely from pushing my body out of the way. She laid on her stomach, a blade pushed right through her back with Lucifer glaring down at her with pure despise.
The image of it reminded me greatly of Porsha, my ex-best friend, from back at the boathouse where she, too, had a knife right through her back. Except this time, the difference was that Minnie was my best friend, the one companion that I held dearest to my heart.
"No!" I screamed my throat hoarse, nose beginning to get stuffy as I could only stare helplessly at Minnie's dead body. She laid motionless, the sword most likely giving her a quick death seeing how it went cleanly through her flesh.
"Now look what you made me do, Addison." Lucifer spat a mouthful of golden blood onto the ground where Minnie laid. Immediately, I began to fumble through the bag, digging through the contents in search of the goblet and the two now-filled test tubes.
Minnie could still be saved. She had to be saved.
"Not so fast." I barely even had time to gather my thoughts before I felt a pair of hands clutched tightly on my upper arm, lifting me clean off the ground and high up into the sky.
Lucifer had spread his wings, soaring through the skies of Heaven as the spot where we were at grew smaller and smaller.
"No! Minnie!" I clawed at my captor and at thin air, watching helplessly as Minnie's fallen figure grew smaller and smaller as we flew further and further away from the scene of her murder.
I choked on my cries, letting out frustrated screams as I tried to wiggle free. Lucifer's hold on me, however, was strong. He brought us far away from the heart of Heaven much quicker than we had arrived. The people beneath us seemed like nothing more than tiny toy figures and I thought I had seen Dimitri and Fabian at some point, both too busy fighting their own battles.
The first thing I saw when I turned around was the thundering force of nature known as Heaven's Falls. We were too close to the ground now and I knew for a fact that if I had not made my way out of this, Lucifer would have flung me off the edge and sent me well to my demise.
Thinking quickly, I contorted my hand as high as I could before jabbing the dagger into Lucifer's hand. With a roar, the fallen angel of light let go of me, resulting in my meeting the ground and rolling away again due to the momentum. Thankfully, I hadn't fallen from such a great height just yet. It was fairly near the garden that we had emerged from earlier and I was only a few feet away from the ground.
I hissed loudly when my left arm made contact with the ground, biting in my screams as I rolled down the slight incline and towards the shrubs and trees. The second I could, I scrambled up to my feet, careful not to make too much noise before ducking under the covers of the tall bushes.
My face must have been filled with scratches and wounds by then, the grass and pebbles slicing welts into my skin as my chest rose and fell with how quickly my heart was beating. From my hiding spot, I could hear the loud beating of Lucifer's wings, the wind changing drastically as he landed quite a distance away from me. However far away he was, it was still not enough.
Suppressing the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes, I furiously wiped them away, breathing through my teeth as I kept my sobs to a minimum. I could not give my position away just yet, not when I did not have a strategy that could help me win this fight.
"Come out come out, Addison," I dared myself to peek through the leaves from my hiding spot. Lucifer had his wings folded back in, dragging behind his broad physique with each step he took closer towards me. "Come out so I can send you to meet your dear friend!"
Fighting a battle of brawns would send me straight to meet my maker. It was useless to use strength against him. For one thing, Lucifer was much stronger and he had the advantage of height with his wings and tall physique. If fighting alongside another had failed me just now, how could I possibly win against him now that I was alone?
'Strength in numbers, Addison. If you are alone, you have to think of another way around the obstacle. Equip your strengths.' A small voice at the back of my mind reminded me.
"I would love to stay and play with you all day but I have a world to take back. If you come out now, I promise to make it painless." The devil's words had a false sweetness to them.
The weight that rested on my shoulder was more than just metaphorical. That was when I realized that I still had Dimitri's bag across my shoulder, the three ingredients needed inside. If I revived, Lucifer would just kill me again and this time, Dimitri would not be there to save me. However, if I equipped its much deadlier purpose...
Time was ticking. I could almost feel Lucifer's presence nearing my hiding spot. Without hesitating any longer, I threw the bag to the ground before pulling out the golden chalice and the two small glass tubes. Carefully, I poured the contents of both test tubes into the chalice, watching as the mixture started to bubble and rise in volume. Instead of gold like the angels' blood, it started to turn a crystal clear, appearing to be just like water. The contents of the cup started to rise, filling the cup nearly to its brim.
"Gotcha!" Lucifer's tone was filled with glee, whispering the words right in my ear.
Immediately whisking my body around, I punched his throat with as much strength as I could muster, sending him into a coughing fit as he had not expected my sudden movement. He stumbled backward, clutching his throat in pain as I sprinted forward to him, goblet clutched tightly in hand.
"Get back to Hell." I hissed, raising the chalice to Lucifer's mouth before tipping the contents in, watching as the concoction splattered all over his face, a good half of it going down his throat.
For a potion that was meant to save a life, it seemed to be pretty venomous. Where the liquid had come into contact with Lucifer's mouth, it started to froth. I watched from a safe distance, sat on the ground in shock as Lucifer clawed at his throat, his body starting to heat up as fumes erupted from his body. The cup had fallen to the floor as I scrambled away and in his haste in attempting to remove the liquid from his mouth, Lucifer accidentally kicked the golden chalice, sending it flying past the edge of Heaven and down towards Paradise. I watched with regret as the golden reflection of the chalice disappeared through the clouds, my hands reaching to my mouth as reality sank in.
"What have I done?" I asked myself, eyes still glued to where I had last seen the goblet.
A sizzling sound caught my attention, Lucifer's body writhing in pain as he dropped to the floor slowly. His body was still fuming, clouds of vapor coming off from his body as his wings disappeared through his back, leaving two slits through his top where the wings had once been. Once his head made contact with the ground, the screams stopped. His body was no longer moving nor smoking, just lying there motionless.
Even though he was both an angel and the devil, Lucifer still died just like everyone else; a mortal.
I slowly edged toward the body, kicking it with the tip of my shoes. Since the body had not moved and proved to most likely be dead, I could feel a little bit of bravery surge through my chest.
Leaning over, I flipped the body around. While Lucifer had died with his stomach to the ground, I pushed him by the shoulder so that he faced up. The sight of the dead body made my stomach churn painfully. In my battle for survival, I had almost forgotten that Lucifer had possessed Lucius's body. Now that I fed Lucifer the mixture through Lucius, I had managed to rid the world of two evils with just one strategic move.
However, I couldn't help but allow the prick of tears to overwhelm my eyes. I licked my dry lips, lightly touching Lucius's cheek. His eyelashes rested on the high points of his cheekbones, eyelids shut peacefully and lips slightly parted. He almost looked like he was asleep.
Though Lucius and I had a rough recent few years, it certainly did not erase the history we had between us. I cupped his cheeks, staring at his eerily calm features as I wiped my tears away with the sleeves of my top.
All of a sudden, he moved. The body twitched before his eyelids flew open, sending me sprawling backward in shock. Though he did not sit up, he began to cough out clear bubbling liquid which I assume had been the mixture I had shoved down his throat. With eyes wide open, I could see the color of his irises clearly.
Lucifer was gone and in that moment, I had the person I had once known as my friend laying there.
"Addison?" Lucius croaked out, his voice strained and eyelids drooping with tiredness. I crawled towards him with newfound courage, hovering over his body as he stared at me.
"Lucius..." I trailed off, voice akin to a whisper.
"I am so sorry."
His apology stunned me. For a second, I stared at him with wide open eyes, jaw slightly agape as Lucius coughed a few times again. This time, golden blood leaked out from the corner of his mouth.
"I know... I know my apologies could not measure up to what I have done to you and all of your past lives but..." Lucius clenched his eyelids shut, pain clearly written across his features as my heart clenched painfully. "I truly did care about you. I know that you will never forgive me and...with all the right to do so. I am just glad to be able to see you one last...time."
I couldn't find myself to speak, shoulders quaking up and down with each disbelieved breath I took in sharply. Lucius stared up into the sky, a new sort of calmness enveloping his features as he took in a deep breath.
"Don't look so sad, Addy. You did it. You defeated a tyrant and the devil and life will finally be easier." Lucius swallowed painfully before he coughed out more blood, his eyebrows furrowed with discomfort.
"Lucius...I..."
"Don't." He swiftly cut me off, eyes opening slightly before he smiled at me softly. My chest felt too tight for comfort, heart erratic as I watched my old friend slowly die away. "You should be happy; for yourself and for me. You see..." He looked back up to the sky again, eyes slowly drifting shut as he took his last breath. "I will finally get to see Adelia again."
Lucius's death was another toll on the list that only ever seemed to be growing. His head rolled limply to a side, chest unmoving as I blinked back my tears. I pressed a hand to my chest, tightly clenching the material of my shirt as I sobbed quietly.
Losing someone never got easier even as the death toll rose. It only ever got more painful, even if it was someone I had fallen out with. I could only hope that I would never have to witness such a pain ever again.
I wasn't left with much time to mourn, however. Not only was sunset soon upon us, I could hear footsteps approaching followed by Dimitri's familiar voice.
"Addison!" He yelled, his figure soon coming into view as I looked up with red and blurry eyes.
When he approached me, Dimitri's steps slowed down as he eyed Lucius with a slightly agape jaw, his eyes scanning the dead angel's body before he swallowed the bile in his throat. He looked at me in silence, as if wanting me to confirm everything.
"It's all over," I chose to say instead.
"Where's the cup, Addison?"
I got to my feet, stumbling towards Dimitri before throwing myself into his arms. At that point, I could not stop myself from crying. The tears were starting to come astray, falling uncontrollably as I sobbed my heart out.
"It fell over the edge. I did what I had to do and I gave the mixture to Lucifer."
"You did what?" Dimitri gently pried me away to stare at me properly in the eye. "Please tell me you are joking, Andy. Even though this really isn't the time to joke at all."
I felt my legs weaken just as Dimitri's hands tightened around my upper arms so that my body would not slam to the ground. I could feel the effects of the sunset well upon me, my body weakening even further as I blinked furiously to clear my blurring vision.
"The mixture kills any living being. So I fed it to Lucifer. There was no way I could win him in a battle of strength so I had to find another way."
The both of us had melted to the ground, the grass beneath us as I sat with my posture slackened. Dimitri was wordless but I liked it better that way. I did not need to hear about the 'what if's in life if they had no way to save me.
I laughed sarcastically, sighing. "So this is it, then?" I sighed, eyes barely leaving the ground before I felt Dimitri's ice-cold fingers cupping my cheeks, forcing me to look upwards. "The cup is gone and we've used up both of the ingredients. There's no other way."
Immediately, I was met with the piercing gaze of his silver orbs. Such beautiful eyes that I will have to eventually forget.
"Don't say that." Dimitri's voice cracked, making my heart tear painfully as well at the sound of his despair. "There's still enough time. I will get down to Paradise and search for the cup and then..." His tone was filled with such desperation, and immediately, I felt my heart sink in an unspeakable sorrow.
"Dimitri..."
"Why am I always losing you?"
Stunned by his sudden and yet inevitable question, my voice searched for an answer, brain going haywire as I attempt to find a reason. Yet, the only thing I could think of was that perhaps this was how we were meant to be since my first life. Always torn apart for time always catches up.
His thumb grazed the apples of my cheeks, catching a tear just as it left the corner of my eye. It just barely touched his skin before dripping past, disappearing into a small puff of smoke just as my body was disappearing into the light as each minute flew by. "I just wish I had spent the time with you right."
Leaning into his hold, I shut my eyes, allowing myself to feel the warmth radiating from his hold for the first time. In such turmoil, his hands seemed so human instead of the frosty cold in which usually came with his touch.
Just as he was warming up to me, and I to him, we were taken away from each other. How very cruel the world was.
"You had. And you will find me again in the next life. Lucius is gone, and so is the devil. We're both safe and you can take all the time you need to start the next life right."
The watch on my hand rested heavily, and as each second ticked by, I knew that Dimitri could feel it too. As the spirit of death, it was his job to ferry the dead to their next life. And now, my time has come.
"I doubt I can love your next life just as much," he whispered, just enough for me to hear.
"You didn't love me at the start. In fact, if I do recall, you tried to kill me." I smiled softly. Those memories back in the boathouse seemed so very long ago. It seemed as though it was from a timeline that belonged in a storybook. Somewhere in a time very far away from reality.
"On the contrary," Dimitri forced a small smile though it held all the sadness in the world. "I think it was love at first sight. Though at the start, it was a different sort of love. It's time you remember every single detail of your past. Our past."
He leaned in, lips hovering just above mine as the coldness came rushing back. With his hand on my chin, he pulled me closer before pressing a gentle kiss to my lips. I could feel a shiver that ran down the course of my spine, cursing every crook and cranny to tremble with a delightful cold rush. It livened me.
How true it was that you are most alive when death walks near.
A burst of memories started to seep into my mind, floating past a blockade in which I never knew I had. Scenes of my past started to flood in once more; some just as I remember while others with a new figure within them. In many memories, Dimitri would sit by me as I go about certain daily things as a child. He was always there, laughing, smiling, and sometimes simply just content with watching me as I play about in the fields of flowers. These were the same memories that had been recovered at my point of death, just much clearer and all the smaller details present where it was once missing. Conversations from our past beyond a child's memory resurfaced, allowing me a memory in which no other adult could possibly reminisce about as it was too far into the past and childhood.
When I opened my eyes, Dimitri's lips were no longer on my own. Instead, he was staring at me wide-eyed and in awe, surprise filling every single crevice of his features before he broke into a brilliant smile.
"Addison, your hand!"
When I raised both my palms upwards, I was shocked to see that color was slowly returning to them. Instead of a ghastly gray-green that resembled a soul, the flesh of my body was starting to regain its color from before. Each part of my body solidified as if regaining the life in which it once had. A relieved smile broke through my features as I choked back a sob.
"How is this possible?" I asked in between tears as Dimitri immediately gathered me in his arms, pressing me tightly against his chest as he rested his chin on top of my head.
"How hilarious," he laughed to himself. "I think I have the answer to that. Kisses from death would save you from himself."
"Well don't stop now." Grinning, I slipped out of his hold before tilting his chin downwards so his lips were at a reachable distance. "I want to live just a little longer than forever with the person I love."
"How humble you are, my lady," he mused. "Such bravery to go courting death. But then again, your wish is my command."
When our lips met again, it was a flurry of emotions. There were no fireworks; that sort of things belonged within the confinements of a fictional book. What we had was very much real. It was more of a toe-curling, blood-rushing, temperature-rising kiss that made me grin against Dimitri's lips.
I was a face full of smiles as we parted for air, eyes suddenly filled with the sort of brightness I thought I had lost.
"Really, though. How is this possible?" Shaking my head in disbelief, my blonde hair flew in the wind due to the movement. "Your kiss should've killed me."
"No, it was never meant to kill you." Dimitri chuckled, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. "As cheesy as it is to say, a kiss of true love would've made you immortal when you were alive."
"But... the New Year's Eve party..." I trailed off, flabbergasted. "It separated my soul into fragments!"
"That was why I pretended to be a friend. To make sure that you didn't actually die but still not being enough to win the game. When you were tied up in the end, you were already willing. You submitted yourself to death and did not fight for your fate. If I had kissed you then, you would've already long been immortal." With Dimitri's revelation, my jaw dropped wide in shock, all the troubles of the past two years filling my mind.
The war that had taken place in Hell and Heaven respectively could've been avoided and Lucius could've been long defeated if Cassiel had never shot Dimitri before my lips could touch the latters.
"Why didn't you just tell me?" I nearly yelled in distress. "The war could've been avoided."
Dimitri's features immediately soured significantly, thinking back to the war that took so many innocent lives. "I couldn't. It was a part of a curse placed on the destiny that bound our fates together. That's why I couldn't tell it to you before you became immortal. Besides, you might not even have cared since we weren't exactly the best of friends in that scenario."
"Bound? Past tense?"
"Yes, bound." Smirking, Dimitri leaned forward to kiss the tip of my nose. "Because now, what binds me to you is my undying love for you, Addison Pilediah. I love you so much that it hurts to even be anywhere without you. It is as if my sole reason of existing is now reduced to just loving you, no longer the reaper of souls."
"So I'm a downgrade," I snorted ungracefully. "How romantic."
"Never." Another kiss, this time placed on the top of my head as I tried - and failed - to hold back a grin. "You're the greatest blessing in my life. I will go through a hundred wars to win your heart."
I could only smile at his words. Finally, all was well and everything could finally progress as it should. What an adventure it had been.
