Yes, yes they are.

And those are the two stereotypes that I see in a high school AU with Ame. He's either the popular kid that has to hid his eyes, or a depressed person who is ashamed of his eyes.

Sometimes he is both. 

I'm a bit sick of seeing it, but it always drives the plot forward and a lot of my favorite stories follow this trend.
