Not Me

"I'm so nervous."

"Bren, it's okay. Don't be nervous." Brendon had been pacing back and forth for half an hour, occasionally running his hand through his hair.

"Don't be nervous? How can I not be? I'm gonna meet my soulmate in..." he looked down at his wrist for the hundredth time in the past hour, "in three minutes." Brendon paced faster, getting me anxious.

"Calm down Bren. You just need to breathe. Everything will be alright."

"Calm down? Breathe? Ryan, what if I do something stupid? What if I completely embarrass myself?" I got up and stood in front of him, effectively blocking his path and stopping his pacing. I put my hands on his shoulder and look him in the eye.

"You don't have to worry about that. I know you'll embarrass yourself. It's second nature for you." Brendon's eyes widen with more worry. "But she's your soulmate. She's not gonna care how many times you make an ass of yourself." I could feel him relax under my hands.

"I guess you're right. I'm just so nervous."

"It'll be alright. Just be you and she'll love you." Brendon smiled up at me and hugged me tightly. I hugged him back, melting into his body. Looking over his shoulder, I saw a girl walking up to us. I squeezed him tightly one last time before pulling away. It was time. Brendon looked at me confused before turning around to face the girl. They both stood for a second, taking each other in before speaking.

"Hi," Brendon breathed out with the biggest smile on his face. "I'm Brendon."

"Sarah," she replied with a sly smile.

"Would you like to go for a walk with me?" Brendon asked, his voice much more confident than it was five minutes ago. When she agreed, Brendon offered his arm to her which she took. He looked over his shoulder and gave me a quick smile before he walked away. I could hear them start up a random conversation as they left me.

I'm not gonna lie and say it didn't hurt to watch him leave. We've been best friends for years. We were inseparable. So to say watching my soulmate leave with someone else hurt was an understatement. I sat back down and thought back. I was excited when my clock flashed zero when we first met, but that changed when I realized his didn't do the same.

It's okay though because we were still together. I saw them stop under a tree. He's my best friend. Their arms wrapped around each other. He's my brother. They leaned in to share their first kiss together. He's my boy. Always will be.
