Chapter 11 : When The Heart Softens

It was graduation day, and the seniors were in their caps and gowns. They had received their diplomas, then threw their caps in the air while their parents cheered at them.

Later, everyone went to the school's gymnasium, where there were some snacks and drinks so students can talk about college and also say farewells to their high school friends one last time

Celine was just finishing talking with a parent then from a distance she saw Mikey was with a very dashing man with a nice suit. It was his father, Hans, "at least another league asked you to play with them after not getting an offer from Super Tundra," he said to his son.

"What can I say, dad, I got this," Mikey replied boastfully.

"Michael. Please, take it seriously, I'm not getting any younger to always pick up the pieces," Hans reminded him in a stern way.

"I'll just be with my friends," Mickey sighed and walked away to be with his friends leaving his father looking annoyed at his son's behavior.

Hans rubbed his brow and shook his head when he saw Celine staring at him, she stopped and looked away acting as though she didn't notice him but it was too late.

Meanwhile, Erika was with her friends, talking to one another about they next move since they had finished high school. "Still sucks that you're not going to RevU with us," Kyle squirmed.

"You're telling me," Trevor sighed. "Don't worry, I might be able to attend next year."

"Hey! guys." Jio went up to them.

"Jio, hi! how are you?" Erika said back to them and gave him a hug.

"I'm good. I just graduated."

"How come you didn't come at prom last night?"

"I'm not interested in going anyway and I was watching the Super Tundra's new members announcement and guess what? Shay got in."

"Alright!" Kyle exclaimed.

"That's awesome," Trevor said.

"I always knew he will." Erika was happy too for her ex.

"Yeah," Jio nodded. He even felt a little awkward mentioning the news to his friend's ex-girlfriend.

"Why don't you join us?"

"Sure."

Later, Erika were getting some drinks by the buffet table at the side with her bestfriend, but then Chris saw a small blood stain from the back of Erika's dress, "You're bleeding," she told her.

"What?" the pregnant girl agaped, and tried to look at the skirt of her dress.

"I'll go get your parents." Chris ran to her friend's mother first and whispered about it to her.

Erika's parents ran to their daughter and saw the spec of blood, "Oh! my God!" Celine gasped. "Let's take her to the hospital."

"Okay," Collin agreed, and carried the teenager on his threshold. "Come on."

Afterwards, they ran to the parking lot outside, "Oh gosh! My baby! My baby," Erika cried. They got to the car, Collin put her at the back carefully and Celine got in there to comfort her daughter then he rushed to the front and drove away.

Moments after, Erika and her parents were in the emergency room. She was lying on the bed with a blanket over her after being checked by the doctor, "Your baby is fine. What you're experiencing is spotting, it's very normal for early pregnancies," the doctor explained. "But it's a good thing you got here just to make sure that it is just that."

"Thank you, Doctor," Celine said.

"Of course, she can go home now but I'll perscribe some medicine." The doctor handed the mom the perscription then walked out the door.

"Thank goodness nothing happened to my baby," Erika sighed in relief.

"Yeah, honey... Were you worried about the baby?" Celine questioned as she noticed her daughter's concern towards her unwanted child.

Erika realized that she was in distress over the baby when they were on their way to the hospital, "No, I mean... I... uhm... I'm not..." she denied. "I just got scared that if something might happen to the baby, it affects me too."

"Usually it's more on the baby," Celine clarified.

Once everthing were cleared out, the teenager and her father were in the waiting area while the mother bought medicine in the pharmacy. "Thanks for driving me here, dad," she said to him.

"Of course, Honey," Collins assured her. "By the way, I have to be with your brother next week. Matthew needs my help with the moving."

"How's he doing after the divorce?"

"He's doing fine, he just wants a fresh star," he answered then looked at his daughter. "By the way, your mom told me you're going to the clinic for the abortion."

Erika began feeling irritable. "What about it?"

"I admit at first, it was shocking and, if I know who did it, I will kill him, but then there's... gonna be a baby." Collins patted her tummy. "Whatever you decide, I will support you but I want you to know that I'm also here to help you with your child if you ever decide to keep it."

"I'm not planning to. If I do keep it then I can't go to Eliard this fall. I'd still be pregnant."

"Then maybe it's not meant to be."

Erika could not believe what father was saying to her. "Sure, it's not like I practice for months to get accepted," she scoffed.

"I'm sorry, that came out wrong. That's not what I meant at all. Okay, let me ask you something, what if you didn't get accepted in Eliard at all? what's your plan B?" he asked her. "And now we're here. These are your options now."

"Some options."

"Let me tell you something. Eliard is not going away. You can auditon again and again until you get in. Plus, there's gonna be a whole world for you if it's not Eliard, but if you decide to abort the baby, I'm telling you that you can't get it back," he told her, Erika saw his point yet at the same time, she was indifferent about it. "And I'm speaking as a parent, that's the decision you might regret for the rest of your life."

Erika looked like she didn't care about yet her father's words affected her. "I just don't know how to love it. I don't know if I ever will."

"I know, Honey. I know. All I'm saying is that whatever you choose, it's not gonna be wrong," her father added.

Later on, the mother and daughter went home without Collins. Erika was in her room talking to her bestfriend on the phone. "I told Jio that you have a kidney problem, it just came up," Chris explained.

"It's fine, I'm sorry that you have to lie for me," Erika apologized while she was munching on vanilla ice cream and chips.

"Don't think about that. I got your back."

"Thanks."

"Are you eating?" Chris heard chewing sounds through the audio.

"Yeah, cravings," Erika confirmed. "Apparently, I like combining salt and sweet together."

"Okay... so what happened today? are you okay?"

"I'm fine, the doctor said that I was spotting. It's normal for early stage of pregnancy and in case you're wondering, the baby is fine too."

"You don't sound fine, what's up?"

"It's... My dad. There's something about what he said that's been bothering me," Erika sighed.

"Why? What did he say?" Her best friend asked.

"That if I abort the baby, I can't get him back..."

"Well, It's true."

"Duh. I know that. I mean why he said it is what's bothering me, like he wants me to keep it, but I don't."

"Well, Sweetie, I followed you outside when your parents carried you to the car, and I heard you crying about 'your baby'," Chris mentioned,

"I... Ugh..." Erika got sheepish.

"Come on, admit it, you were worried, weren't you?"

"Okay. Maybe... I did, I was afraid for him. I don't know why from that moment, I got scared that I lose it." Erika somehow admitted yet sounding indenial.

"Probably, you are starting to have soft spot for it," Chris teased.

"I'm not a heartless monster, Chris. But I can't keep it. I love my future too much to throw it away just because I got pregnant from rape."

"There you go. No one is stopping you whether you want to keep it or not. Right now, it's just a bunch of cells forming."

"Yeah..." the pregnant teenager responded as she ponder about it.

The next afternoon, Erika was in her favourite Chinese Restaurant called, Jade Cooks, with her mother to celebrate that she finished high school. "I'm sorry, your dad couldn't be here," Celine said to her.

"It's okay, mom," Erika said back in a sad tone but not because her father wasn't there.

"Honey, maybe you should at least cheer up because we are celebrating and I ordered your favorites, roast duck and yang chow fried rice."

"Thanks, mom." The teenager smiled.

About an hour passed, the mother and daughter finished eating, also paying the bill. They stood up from their seats feeling bloated from the food they were eating. "That was good," Celine expressed.

"Yeah, were you this hungry when you were pregnant," Erika asked.

"I could eat a whole watermelon."

"No way."

Once they got out and headed to the car, her mother stopped walking. "Oohh," she moaned.

"Mom, are you okay?" the daughter asked, Celine's sour face.

"Yeah, I think I ate too much. I need to go to the restroom real quick."

"Okay, I'll be right here."

While her mother rushed back inside the restaurant, Erika was left alone in the parking lot. Suddenly, a woman appeared, pushing stroller with a baby boy in it.

The teenager happened to watch, and saw how chubby the kid looked that his short could burst at any moment. She could see that he was gazing right at her, even smiling while chewing on his teether.

Suddenly, his mother stopped to get her phone and started digging in her bag. Distracted, she accidentally elbowed the handle on the stroller that it moved to the road where a car could passed by at any moment.

Erika was nearby that she quickly went there, managing to stop the pushchair in time. "Oh, God," the mother reacted. "I'm so sorry."

"That's okay," the teenager said.

"Anyway, thank you. I am so tired. This little fella keep me up all night, and my babysitter is away for the summer, so now I have to leave him in the daycare until she gets back."

"Oh..." Erika just nodded then felt the baby's hand touching her, which made her heart softened. "He seems so sweet."

"He is. He doesn't really cry around strangers though." The mother pulled the stroller back, and noticed that it was wobbly so she took her son out. "I need to fix the wheel real quick. Do you mind holding him for a sec?"

"Uhm... I..." The teenager was taken aback, but before she could answer, the mother handed to her the baby while she repair the stroller.

Erika found the infant heavy yet huggable. She entertained him the best way she could until she looked at his face, admiring how round and puffed his cheeks were. Then the baby smiled, that was when his dimples appeared.

Suddenly, Celine came out, and caught her daughter carrying a child while mother was preoccupied. Not only that, she saw how Erika was handling it, like she knew what she was doing.

Once the stroller was fixed, Erika gave the baby back to the woman, and saw her mother was waiting for her next to their car so she went back to her after politely saying her farewell to the mother and son.

"What was that?" Celine questioned with a teasing look.

"Uhm... Long story," Erika replied.

"I have to say, that baby is so adorable."

"Yeah, did you see his chubby face and hands. He's like a little polar bear. I hope my baby is that chubby."

Her mother shrugged and grinned as they got inside the vehicle. "We'll see."
