Chapter 9
Night had settled upon the forest and it had been a tearful journey back to Moondust's pack. The den was silent for the most part, Sunny, Thunder, and Timber all making their rounds to the nearest dens, checking on those that had fallen ill during the day. Moondust's friend and the two medics looked exhausted as they moved about, but mostly they stayed in the medicine den where their most critical of patience were being kept. It was the easiest way to keep the disease taking over the pack contained to some degree. Though, it did seem as if it were spreading quicker and quicker with each passing hour.
Gambit had not been forgotten, Ivy fighting back the tears she wanted to continue to shed. However, with patients needing to be seen, she couldn't let them know she was mourning the loss of a friend. Not that he had passed away, but he had been stolen from her care like the dead being spirited away. Her heart was aching, but her duties as a medic were in need as of right now. Gambit would come next the moment she was finished tending to the overly sick and helping Sunny, Timber, and Thunder manage the worst of it.
Drifter and Moondust sat at the entrance of the pack den, staring in at all the silent commotion going about within the medicine den. Silence sat between them like a gentle breeze keeping two wolves apart from one another, but for them, it was because they didn't know what they were going to say to one another. So many questions lingered in the air between Drifter and Moondust, no one knew where to start or begin. Moondust wanted to ask about his earlier statement, but found it probably wasn't the right time to be doing so. Instead, she just remained quiet and stared on as if they didn't have anything to speak of.
A gentle sigh slipped from Moondust, her eyes drifting down to the ground she had been pawing at very lightly. The dirt was being pushed around as if it didn't have a place to sit and she was trying to figure out exactly where to put it.
"The pack will be fine, you know that, right?"
Her head shot up and turned towards Drifter, his soft and reassuring words circling around her like little fluttering butterflies tickling her fur. A small smile tugged at her lips, followed by an unsteady nod of her head.
"Yeah, I know. Though, I still can't help but worry regardless. Ivy mentioned it's not a full proof remedy to cure it, but it can help make them comfortable and give them a better chance at fighting the Walking Sickness."
Moondust kept her voice down as well, their whispered conversation in courtesy of those trying to rest from the long hard day that they've had. She would have liked to lay down in her own den, but she knew sleep was not going to come easy to her that night. Instead, she would stand guard at the entrance of their pack's den and watch for any threats that may come their way.
Watching Moondust and the way her eyes scanned the area, Drifter had to admire her determination and tenacity. Though, he also had to admit that she was just down right stubborn. He was almost certain if he tried to coax her off to her den to get some well deserved sleep she would have shot the idea down. So, instead of doing so, he looked out over the pack's den and watched every little movement that each wolf made. Whether it be a medic tending to the sick, a pack member shifting around to get comfortable, or a simple squirrel testing its luck by running through the den to get home, he watched each and every movement.
"Drifter?"
Looking over towards Moondust as she gained his attention, Drifter's gentle curiosity sparked upon his face like the fireflies that flitted around the den. He remained silent, but made sure to keep his gaze on Moondust to let her know he was awaiting her question.
"Will you stay here? With the pack I mean?"
Shock spread across his features, not expecting such a question from the she-wolf beside him. His brain rallied, raced, and did flip flops within his skull as he worked to form an answer for Moondust. So, when she looked at him curiously for an answer, he turned his gaze back onto the wolves that were moving about the den.
"As long as you will it."
