Ready Player One
"Anti, are you still awake?" Anti heard Dark whisper-shout across the room, causing Anti to wake up with a jolt of surprise. Anti froze when he woke up, fear gripping his heart when he realized that he was no longer home, even though the covers were the same. Until he remembered what happened the day before.
His dad's dead.
He killed him and Billy.
His name is Antisepticeye, not John Schneeplestien.
He's a part of the Shadows.
"Yeah." Anti whispered back, snapping out of his thoughts when he remembered that Dark had asked him a question.
"Follow me." Dark instructed. Anti couldn't see very well in the pitch blackness that surrounded him, but he heard Dark's nearby bed creak and faintly saw his outline stand up. All of the monitors were shut off, cutting off the only source of light Anti knew they had. Anti silently crawled out of bed as well, shivering when his bare feet landed on the cool concrete below him. He almost wished he was back home so it wouldn't be as dark or cold.
Almost.
Anti tip toed after Dark, instinctively holding his breath as he passed by Infelix's peacefully sleeping form. Infelix had one arm draped over his eyes, his mouth hanging open with a puddle of drool on his pillow while he snored softly.
Dark paused for a beat so Anti could catch up to him before quietly treading further down the tunnel, his bare feet making little noise on the concrete floor.
Together they ventured further down the tunnel, Dark leading Anti through the maze that was the tunnel system until they reached a dead end much to Anti's confusion.
"Are we lost?" Anti asked quietly with a small frown.
Dark shook his head with a smile, knocking on the wall in front of them three times.
Instantly the wall slid down out of view, revealing a large arcade room filled with various games like pinball, pool, table hockey, Pac-Man, and ski-ball.
The floor was covered by a black carpet, the concrete walls painted black with chalkboard paint. Several doodles were peppered throughout the room.
The room was lit up by a couple of light bulbs dangling from the ceiling on strings. There was a sleek black counter with red stools pressed against the farthest left corner close by the pool table and hockey table.
"How did you get all this?" Anti gasped as he walked in, running a hand over one one of the arcade machines absent mindlessly.
"Infelix paid me to make Mad, his personal virus he could use for whatever he wants. He paid me enough to make this little place just for me. You're the first person I've shown this room to." Dark turned to face Anti, his expression unreadable even though Anti could see his face shine in the dim light.
"Wifi password is over there." Dark gestured to the far back wall in front of them that had a tv meant with several stations hooked up, several plush black chairs surrounding it with gaming controllers left abandoned on the floor.
"I don't care what you mess with, but don't touch this." Dark lifted a red and black cased laptop up off of one of the chairs by the tv to show Anti before setting it back down.
"Fair enough." Anti shrugged, reaching into his pockets for his phone, only to realize that he didn't have it on him.
"Here, Infelix gives new phones out every month so we can't be traced." Dark handed Anti a sleek thin black phone out of his own pocket.
"How does he afford all of this?" Anti wondered aloud as he examined the phone in his hand. It looked like the best of phone technology, which would make it very expensive, especially if he paid for three new ones every month.
"Not my story to tell." Dark shrugged casually as he flipped down into a chair, scooping up a white controller that was shaped like a rectangle.
"Wanna play Mario Kart?" Dark offered Abti another controller similar to his. Anti nodded eagerly as he sat down in the chair to the right of Dark and took the remote, fiddling with the buttons so he would understand the controls.
"I forgot, you need this." Dark handed him a wheel that connected to the remote. Anti snapped it on and watched Dark set the game up.
"What character do you want?" Dark asked without looking away from the screen.
"I'll do random." Anti shrugged, closing his eyes and scrolling through the different characters.
"There." Dark stopped Anti's hand from cycling through characters by placing his hand on top of Anti's hand that was on the controller. Anti felt his cheeks heat up and turn a light red hue, but he wasn't sure why.
It's probably just a little hot in here, Anti thought as he opened his eyes to see what character he got.
"WALUIGI!" Anti shouted, impersonating the character's voice which earned a deep laugh from Dark that made Anti laugh as well. It took hem several minutes to get their breathing under control and the tears out of their eyes.
"I'll be Mario." Dark decided after some consideration.
"What, you're not gonna try and impersonate him?" Anti raised a challenging eyebrow at Dark.
"Anti, I'm not six." Dark dramatically rolled his eyes at the Irishman.
"Who says you aren't? We're all kids on the inside." Anti encouraged him with a grin.
Dark let out a soft, low sigh before biting his lip and taking a deep breath.
"It's a me, Mario!" Dark attempted to impersonate his character, failing miserably in Anti's opinion.
Anti snorted in amusement, using all of his willpower to not laugh at the pouting teen.
"Let's just start the race so I can beat your butt." Dark grumbled, his tone slightly bitter as he chose the star cup.
Dark got first on every race while Anti kept getting last, making excuses up each time he failed.
"No fair, I demand a rematch!" Anti pouted, folding his arms across his chest with the controller still in hand.
Dark opened his mouth to reply when his phone vibrated in his pocket, alerting him that he got a text. Dark's smile shifted to a small frown as he took his phone out of his pocket and read the text before putting back in his pocket.
"That was Infelix, he wants to know where we are." Dark stated.
"Why?" Anti frowned, not wanting to leave.
"He has a job for us." Dark ran a hand through his raven black hair, making him look more tired than before.
"Best to not keep him waiting." Anti sighed. He didn't want to see Infelix's dark side anytime soon.
Silently the two deactivated the gaming system and the controllers before Dark flicked the lights off and tapped the wall once to close the wall back up behind them, making the hidden arcade room look like a dead end tunnel once more.
"You won't tell Infelix about the arcade, right?" Dark asked Anti.
"I won't tell anyone about it." Anti promised him with a nod as they walked back through the maze back to Infelix to receive their next job.
