Backfire
"Wake up, we're here." Anti heard Dark's deep rumbling voice laced with weariness as he gently shook Anti's shoulder to wake him up.
"Where are we?" Anti yawned, sleepily running his eyes with one hand while raising the other high above his head to stretch.
"Coast of Florida at a beach house. It's a damn nice one too." Dark remarked as Anti started to stand.
Since he lost circulation to his legs due to the position he slept in, they felt heavy like lead, which caused him to crumple to the ground as soon as he got to his feet.
"Easy there tiger, I'll get you a coffee to help you wake up." Dark chuckled as he caught the Irishman before he hit the floor, carefully laying him back down in the chair before going to the corner with the minibar and retrieving a coffee machine from under the counter and plugged it in, making enough for two cups.
Dark was certain Anti would need both.
"Why is everything black?" Anti groggily turned in his seat to glance over at Dark.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Dark frowned as he strode over to Anti in two steps, his red and black eyes boring into Anti's green and black ones.
"I don't mean it like that. I mean like the jet, our uniforms, even our pjs are all black. Why?" Anti rephrased the question, his face turning a light red hue as he pretended to be interested in his black shoes.
"Infelix's logic is that everything goes good with black." Dark sighed with a dramatic eye roll.
"He's not wrong." Anti smirked.
It was Dark's turn to blush as he hastily went back to the coffee machine and filled a black mug with a pixel heart up with coffee and a ton of sugar, as well as creamer, before handing it to Anti.
Anti nodded in appreciation, grabbing the mug with both hands and taking a small sip.
"Is Anti up yet?" Anti heard Infelix shout from outside the jet.
"He just woke up!" Dark shouted back, shooting Anti a look that told him to stay put before exiting the jet, leaving Anti alone.
Anti ignored Dark's silent command and instead tresses down the ramp with the mug still in his hands.
"-as long as it doesn't affect your work, I don't care." Anti heard the last part of Infelix's sentence.
"Anti, I told you to stay in the jet." Dark spoke in a dangerously calm, stern tone.
"You're not my boss." Anti pointed out, earning a smirk from Infelix and a glower from Dark before he stomped off to sit at the edge of the ocean.
"Don't mind him, he's just...him." Infelix finished lamely before walking back inside the jet to retrieve his weapon. Anti walked over to where Dark was sitting with his arms wrapped around his knees and sat down beside him in the same style.
The sun was barely hovering over the horizon at this point, the sky a beautiful backdrop of reds, oranges, and pinks.
"You didn't hear anything else, did you?" Dark spoke up after a moment of uncomfortable silence.
"No." Anti shook his head, wondering what Dark and Infelix were talking about.
"Are you okay?" Anti asked Dark, his eyes scanning him for any obvious signs of injury.
Dark looks completely healthy, so what was Infelix worried about that would affect Dark's work?, Anti thought in mild frustration. He hated not knowing things, especially when other people knew things he didn't.
"Nothing you need to worry about." Dark assured Anti with a relieved smile, the tension draining from his shoulders.
"You two, get over here." Infelix hissed at Dark and Anti. They exchanged glances before pushing themselves up off of the sand and jogging over to where he was standing at the bottom of the lowered boarding ramp.
"It's two in the morning, so Alexander should still be asleep, as well as his son. I'll stay out here and keep watch to make sure no one sees us. Dark, you go in with Anti and take Alexander out. If the kid sees either of you, don't kill him no matter what. He's what's giving us the three million." Infelix instructed, adjusting the position of the sniper rifle still slung across his back.
Dark nodded and silently crept through the sand with Anti towards the large, dark beach house looming in the distance.
Anti could barely see what looked like a deck that they could vault over the small fence of to reach the backdoor so they wouldn't have to go through the front.
"Stay here, I'll scout it out." Dark told Anti quietly before hopping over the small fence of the deck and cracking the door open slightly so he could peer in.
"Clear." Dark mouthed to Anti, motioning for Anti to follow him inside.
There were no security systems surprisingly, making Alexander an easy target.
"I don't like this, stuff like this is never easy." Dark growled warily, constantly scanning their surroundings as they cautiously felt around them so they could walk down the hallway towards Alexander's bedroom.
"C'mon, the guy's probably just stupid." Anti assured Dark, moving a little faster to get ahead of him and finish the mission since he was getting impatient. He tightened his grip on the handle of his pistol, his other hand poised to grab the knife as he slowed down slightly once he reached the bedroom door.
"I'm not as stupid as you might think."
Anti whirled around just in time to see the flash of a gun firing, accompanied by a yell of pain, as well as shock, and the thud of a body hitting the wooden floor.
"Lets go Dark!" Anti felt his heart pounding hard in his chest like a drum, blood rushing in his ears as he darted outside.
"Stop or I'll shoot you too!"
Anti froze when he heard a voice that was a much higher pitch than Dark's behind him. He slowly turned around to see the son Jake shakily holding a pistol similar to Anti's in his hands, his forest green eyes wide with fear.
"Put the gun down-"
"Someone hired you to kill my dad, right? Who was it this time? Joanna?" Jake interrupted Anti, his slightly quivering tone betraying his poorly disguised fear.
"I don't know." Anti lied, holding his hands up in surrender.
"Did you shoot my friend?" Anti demanded, feeling fear turn his blood ice cold.
"Yeah, but he's a killer!" Jake protested.
"We both are." Anti muttered under his breath as he threw the knife in his sleeve at Jake.
It embedded itself handle deep into the middle of Jake's forehead.
Anti didn't feel a twinge of guilt, nor did wait to watch Jake's body fall face first in the sand. Instead, Anti sprinted as fast as his legs would allow him back inside to find Dark, praying that he wasn't dead.
It took him three minutes that felt like hours to find Dark lying unconscious in the bathroom, a bag full of medical equipment with its contents spilling out lying on the white tiled floor beside him. Dark had a bullet wound in the chest that was dangerously close to his heart, blood seeping through his suit and steadily pooling around him.
"Dark!" Anti cried, kneeling down in the blood to check his vitals. They were weak, but thankfully still there, as well as his heartbeat.
Anti grabbed the bag of medical supplies and slung it over his shoulder before scooping Dark up bridal style and carrying him to the jet.
"What the hell happened?!?" Infelix yelled once Anti brought Dark inside the jet.
"Alexander apparently wasn't home, but Jake was. He shot Dark, so I shot him." Anti explained through gritted teeth as he delicately laid Dark's unconscious form in a seat and reclined it back.
"I told you to not kill him!" Infelix snapped furiously.
"We need to take him to a hospital." Anti ignored Infelix's argument, already removing Dark's suit jacket and white button up shirt underneath so he could remove the bullet. He noticed that there were several other scars on his torso, making him wonder if he had gotten shot before.
"Can't, we'd be arrested as soon as we walk through the doors." Infelix sighed in exasperation, running a hand through his white hair so it wildly stuck up in various places.
"You're the only person here with medical knowledge." Infelix stated as he slumped down into a seat.
"I can do this, I can do this." Anti chanted as he managed to find a pair of tweezers in the bag of supplies he stole. Anti made sure they were sterile before plunging them into the wound to retrieve the bullet. Dark instantly let out a cry of pain, his eyes flying open to look at Anti.
"You're going to be okay." Anti promised Dark, mainly to comfort himself as he forced the tweezers deeper inside. Dark bit his lip to keep from screaming, his eyes welling with tears.
In that moment, Anti remembered that Dark was around his age, either eighteen or nineteen. Even though Dark acted tough, he could still feel pain like Anti.
"I got it, the worst part is almost over." Anti swallowed hard as he finally managed to find the bullet and grip it with the tweezers. By the time he carefully removed the bullet, Dark had passed out again due to a combination of pain and blood loss.
Anti allowed the bullet to fall to the floor with a metallic tink before finding a roll of bandages and wrapping it multiple times around Dark's wound.
"Is he going to be okay?" Infelix quietly spoke up with hesitation, which was unlike him.
"I'll watch him tonight to make sure he's stable, but yes, he should be okay." Anti sighed in relief as he collapsed into the seat adjacent to Dark's, watching his chest rise and fall with every shallow breath he took before finally falling into a fitful sleep.
