Chances (Nina)

Nina

"Now that finals have officially been conquered, what's the plan?", I ask Rachel who is still getting used to her Starbucks chair.

"Oh, By the way, I like totally forgot to tell you this but Naomi's going to stay here for high school", Rachel says excitedly, completely ignoring my question as usual

"Really?", I ask, pretending to be interested.

"Yeah!, She's staying as a freshman just like us!", she practically shouts at me.

"Oh! Well that's really cool! Good for you", I say. Naomi, her girlfriend was going to attend a school across town but her parents made a split second decision to drop the moving plan.

Rachel and I have been friends since 6th grade, and now we'll be starting high school. I wouldn't have imagined her to be the type who sticks around. Don't get me wrong, no one ever actually stays in Stansmith School up until high school graduation. It's not weird, it's become an accepted fact by now, you finish 8th grade and you either move or transfer, but Rachel and I, we're going to stay. for good.

"Hmm so what are you thinking for extra curricular this year?", I ask.

"Eventually, You know I'm gonna do whatever you're gonna do", she murmured as she texted  on her phone. Probably Naomi.

"How about Model UN? Debate club? Home science? Heck, maybe even Zumba?"

"Honestly, I don't have a plan for freshman year! All I know is that we are gonna be different people and the childish grade school rumours will take a break. Not because people will grow up but because, there will be just too less people. I also know that if you, Nina, aren't going to stop making up lies, the world might literally just collapse.", Rachel scoffs at me.

Well at least that speech got her to put her phone away.

"Listen to me, If it means a better social life, I tend to take my chances. Plus you know that people don't hold on to anything I say so does it even matter?", I was frustrated, so I tried not to let it all out.

"Well you can take your chances another way but just remember, everyone won't be there for you to clean up your messes all the time so maybe start acting like we're actually going to high school", she said as she finally took a sip of her vanilla latte.

"Rachel. I get that. I'm working on it.", I say. I mean it.

"Fine, but maybe we can get started with getting you in therapy.", she said as if it was the easiest thing she could ever say.

"Great", I whisper. What do I have to lose?

Taking my chances never really got me anywhere, anyways.
