Chapter Two
April hummed softly, looking at the brothers. "I'll get the berries blended up for the youngest ones..." The blue banded turtle looked at her, holding his daughter. "Hang on, can I help out?" The red eared slider looked at April, hope shining in his eyes. "It's just, I want to be useful to my daughter..."
The young adult nodded a bit, humming softly. "Yeah, I brought freeze dried bugs, different fruits and different fruit juices to make food for the kids..." April smiled a bit as she informed the turtle of what she bought. Leo hummed gently and made sure to look over all the food, carefully rinsing everything the kids were going to eat. The slider was anxious, not wanting these little kids to get sick and he slowly turned to April.
"... What?" Leo asked gently, one eyebrow raised as he looked at his sister. April just shrugged and tried to think of something to say. "I've just never seen you so serious, or anxious, about something..." she commented with a soft sigh. "What? You don't think I can be serious? April- after everything you guys still don't trust me?" He was upset, obviously and sighed a bit, shaking his head and just working on getting everything made.
"Leo, we trust you; I trust you, it's not bad that you're serious or anxious, I was just saying..." April said with a soft sigh, patting Leo's shoulder. "You're going to take good care of that little girl; I have faith in you." The red eared slider gave a smile and hummed, cutting up some of the fruits and berries, adding them to a blender with some of the juice. He hummed and sighed, just sort of zoning out at the sound of the blender's constant whirring.
His small moment of piece was quickly ruined after he heard a small cry of pain and he immediately shut off the blender, moving into the other room. His shoulders slumped and he saw that Haruki had fallen from Splinters arms and had landed on her shell. He quickly walked to his daughter, picking her up. "It's okay, Haruki, Papa Leo's got you, hun..." No matter what comfort he gave she just kept crying. He felt like something was up and turned her to look at her shell.
April just followed after Leo, trying to stay calm. "Yep, he'll take great care of her..."
Leo's eyes widened as he glanced across her shell. "Damn, her shell got cracked from the fall, Dad, how'd you drop her?" The older rat's ears went down in shame and upset. "She bit my finger, and I dropped her in panic, I didn't mean to drop her, much less cause damage..." The blue banded turtle sighed heavily, using one hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. "April, get me a cloth and some warm water, please?" he asked his sister, rocking the bleeding toddler. "On it, Leo..." he watched her leave for a few moments before turning his head to Splinter, his father. "Dad, get the bandages and antibiotic ointment from the medbay, if you could?" he watched the older rat nod carefully before leaving to get what was requested.
Raph chuckled a bit and looked at his brother. "Hey bro, you're taking to this role easier than I thought you'd adjust..." he said softly. Leo looked up at him. "I've been leading for a decade, have... have I still not earned your trust, Raph?" he asked shakily. The red clad snapper realized what he said and winced.
"No, no, I do trust you, it-it was jus' an observation..." he sighed and placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "We'll all be here, lookin' out for each other, 'specially our kids..." Leo nodded and saw April come back with a washcloth. "Thanks April..." he said, taking the cloth and gently cleaning off Haruki's shell and wounds, waiting for his Dad to get the antibiotic ointment and bandages. He winced, watching the washcloth turning a muddy reddish color. He looked at the very much thrashing, very much crying child. He tried to think of how to comfort her. "Hey, hey, Haruki, calm down hun..." he said softly, trying to be gentle, then remembered how Raph used to comfort him when he was just a little kid. The girl's crying slowed as he started to hum softly to her, rubbing over her shell in small circles. "Hey, hey, honey, you're safe now, Papa Leo is gonna make everything safe..." He kept repeating the gentle affirmations and rocking her softly. Slowly the ringing in his ears let up as her cries softened and he sighed happily, continuing to rub small circles into her shell. Leo snapped his head up at the creak in the floorboards and his shoulders relaxed, noticing his father.
"I am back, and I apologize for allowing her to end up hurt, Leonardo..." Splinter said softly, watching Leo bandage Haruki's wounds with swift accuracy. "Will she be alright?" The rat saw his son nod and smiled a bit. "Good, good..."
