chapter seven

Billy's POV

"You need to release her."

I stopped dead in my tracks, turning around to face Jason. I swallowed the knot in my throat before I dared to speak. "What did you say?"

"You heard me. Release Wanda. Let her out of the stone." Jason walked closer, towering over me in a slightly threatening manner.

"How do you expect me to do that?"

"We both heard Bats, you can warp reality, so warp it to set her free." He narrowed his eyes, hand resting on the holster on his hip.

I gulped. "I-I don't know if I can. I mean, I'm not sure how to do that."

Jason's glare hardened and he pushed me into the wall, his forearm resting on my throat, cutting off my airflow slightly. "Well, you are going to figure it out, got it?" Jason released me from his hold and I gasped for air, holding my throat where his forearm was just pressed. He narrowed his blue eyes into slits before talking in a low, threatening voice. "Billy, you have to bring Wanda back. You have to."

I nodded vigorously, grateful for the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps. Both Jason and I took a step away from each other when we saw Tim round the corner. He shot us a curious look before getting straight to the point. "Guys, we have a mission, c'mon."

Jason gave me one last withering look before running after his brother, me a few steps behind. The three of us entered the mission room, standing at the back with Tommy and M'gann as Batman launched into the briefing.

"Team, we have been tracking Thanos' moves ever since attacked us at the Hall of Justice. He has just entered our solar system, most likely with one destination in mind. Your mission is to join up with the Avengers to protect the Mind Stone." I noticed Pietro visibly flinch at the mention of the stone and I reminded myself that that was the stone the Light used to control Wanda. "The Justice League will stay here to protect the Reality Stone."

"Sir, what about the Time Stone?" M'gann raised her hand, drawing all eyes to her. "Who will be protecting that?"

"Don't worry about the Time Stone, it is in good hands." Batman assured us, dismissing us to the bioship. I took my seat next to Tommy, nerves flooding my system as I reminisced on my past fight with Thanos. My bruised stomach still has not fully healed from the force of his punch. I shuddered to think of what he could do now with three Infinity Stones.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, so I glanced back to see Tim's concerned expression. "You okay? I know he kind of kicked your ass last time you fought."

I shook out my nerves and forced a carefree smirk on my face. "Hey, I didn't see you teleporting him away."

Tim shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "What do you think he wants to do with all the Stones?"

I shook my head uselessly. "He can do anything he wants with a snap of his fingers. I assume nothing good."

Tim was silent the rest of the flight to the Avenger's compound, as was I. We landed the bioship on the roof, exiting to be greeted by Black Widow and Hawkeye. Pietro ran up to both of them and hugged them tightly. "I've missed you."

"Awe, shucks." Hawkeye ruffled Pietro's hair with a fond smile. "You know you're always welcome to visit."

Kaldur stepped forward, all business. "I assume you know why we are here."

Black Widow nodded. "Follow us."

We descended into the compound, through a maze of hallways and finally emerged into a grand room with a case in the middle, heavily guarded by a grid of lasers. Inside the case was a glowing necklace, the source of the ominous glow was a yellow gemstone in the center of the piece of jewelry. I felt the nerves of my team spike as all eyes fell on the mind stone.

A shudder ran through group and I let out a gasp as an overwhelming sense of dread consumed me. I tried to ignore the feeling as best I could, but the longer I stared at the mind stone, the stronger the feeling become. It felt as if it was choking me out, clogging my pores and demanding to be paid attention to.

Finally, I listened to my intuition and looked up, noticing the trembling of the lights and the particles of dust rapidly falling from the ceiling. I squinted as the trembles became quakes and particles became clouds before I realized a second too late what it meant.

"He's here!"

Then the roof came crashing in.
