Chapter 5
The day afterward, Dia went to Tellulah's for some tea, outdoors. Tellulah lived in a small cottage that was located in a meadow that was in eternal spring, due mostly to her magic. Skypainter enjoyed the grazing opportunities, and Dia loved to spend time with her close friend.
Tellulah's casual wear was less boho and a lot more cottagecore, with long, floral ruffled dresses and jewelry that was in the shapes of various animals. She often went barefoot, and her hair was in a more relaxed style.
Tellulah asked Dia about Noctave as she served green tea.
"I really think you've got a keeper there, but I wonder if you should stay with her, with all the secrets she's keeping."
Dia sipped some of the tea. It was bitter, but rich and refreshing.
"She's the moon goddess. Of course she has some secrets. There's a dark side of the moon for a reason, isn't there?"
"I always recommend to check someone's background before pairing up, but you can't really do that, can you? Every god seems to know of Noctave, but no one, except for her parents(whoever they made be) really knows her. She's a secluded girl, as you know."
"I know, but I trust her. If she was wearing a mask, the first cracks would've shown by now."
Tellulah poured herself another glass of green tea. "Be vigilant. The sun doesn't shine everywhere, all at once. Do you think that Noctave is too...innocent for a long term relationship?"
Dia almost spat out her drink. "Innocent? She's a very sweet and kind goddess, and seems to be very empathetic. But she's no ingenue! She lead me through a dark forest, and she's clearly been there before. The library of Eventide Castle has great works of both fiction and nonfiction, allowing her to experience much. I bet she knows more about biology than either of us, along with a great many other topics. As for maturity, she seems to have more than Halucina, at least."
"I get where you're coming from, Dia. When I started my relationship with Tiempel, so long ago, I thought he was a perfect angel. He's still my angel, but I know he has flaws. Your infatuation won't last forever, and soon, you may get into some arguments. How you handle this after the infatuation goes away will make or break your relationship."
Dia's train of thought was interrupted by the sight of a golden deer grazing alongside Skypainter. Dia eventually refocused, and told Tellulah, "Thanks for telling me that. Hopefully things will work out."
In Noctaria, Noctave was busy interacting with her worshipers, a small shrine in the countryside. She would sometimes show up in person to the temples, but there occurrences were uncommon.
A commercial fisher asked her, "So can you make the seas more bountiful this week? I need the money to pay off my house loan."
Noctave didn't see this as needy, and remained kind. "I can work out something that'll make you money. I promise." She got on offering of fresh bread and a box of chocolates, graciously thanking both of the worshipers.
The priest that ran the place had an idea. "Since the moon is waxing, and you're very powerful, would you like to do some soothsaying for us?"
"Oh, I'd love to!"
She cast a spell that showed her a vision of the future. Said vision was not pleasant. It showed her an eclipse and a murder and conspiracy of crows and ravens, swarming around her, scratching her with their talons. She ended the spells, and caught her breath for a moment. All her worshipers were concerned at seeing her so shaken.
Noctave ate some of the bread and told them of her vision. The priest comforted her, as did some of the worshipers.
The priest dared to say what they were all thinking. "Is it a sign that Umbrum is planning to return? Who else has crow and raven symbols?"
"Tiempel is often seen with a crow by his side." one of the worshipers said. "Yeah, but his crow, Hour, wouldn't hurt a fly. Umbrum's crows and ravens tear people to pieces and peck out their eyes."
Afterward, the people spread the news of her startling vision far and wide. The fisher told the weaver, the weaver told the dairy farmer, the dairy farmer told the hunter, the hunter told the merchant, and the merchant spread that news to the land they were traveling to.
The squid people who lived in the ocean's depths heard about it soon enough, who rejoiced, as they were very devout worshipers of Umbrum. Some parts were exaggerated, with it being without a doubt a sign of Umbrum returning, or the entire vision becoming a lot more ridiculous and theatrical. But at its core, the message was the same: Umbrum is coming.
