Chapter 29
AN: A moodboard I made for Noctave. I think it fits her to a tee. Feel free to make one of your own and send it to me.
Noctave was out in the forest, seeking a break from the busy Midsummer preparations. Soon, the days would grow ever longer and the nights would be a distant memory. It wouldn't bother Noctave, though, because due to it taking place on the full moon, she'd be in another form.
As she foraged for flowers to use in perfume, she saw Verdant, god of the greenery, spring, nature, and fertility.
He was a little bit taller then Noctave, very fit, and his skin was barky. He had no hair; There were 2 great branches on the top of his head, heavy with strange fruit. In the winter, they looked like deer antlers.
Verdant wasn't one for high fashion, wearing a ribbed shirt and shorts and a belt with a tree on the buckle.
"Verdant! Didn't expect to see you here!"
"Why not? I'd be a fool to miss out on experiencing these endless days."
"Alright. Where have you put all the yarrow?"
Verdant laughed, nervous. "I used most of it to help out my lover with a cold."
Noctave blinked. "Who's your lover?"
Verdant rubbed the back of his neck. "Did I say lover? I meant fling."
Noctave was suspicious, but changed the subject. "Could I have a fruit of yours? You kind of owe me after using all that yarrow."
Verdant picked off a yellow, mango-shaped fruit from his boughs and tossed it to Noctave, who caught it.
"Is it poisonous?"
"No, but use it in place of the yarrow. Whatever you do, don't eat it!"
Noctave put the fruit in her apron pocket. "I heard that Philiana tried to set you up with Urainia, even though you repeatedly told her you only like men. What was going on there?"
Verdant sighed. "I knew you'd ask me about that.
Philiana was dead set on separating Urainia and Umbrum, because she felt he was 'competition'. But Urainia didn't feel happy without Umbrum, and she had to find a replacement fast. And I was around, so..."
He shook his head, the leaves on his branches ruffling.
"I'd hate to be known as 'the gay guy that Philiana tried to set up with Urainia'. Me and her aren't on speaking terms right now, anyway."
Noctave didn't pry further. "Will the harvest be good this year? I bet that Cumulus isn't above striking the lands with a drought again."
"He might, if he wants to get the shit beat out of him by Umbrum."
"No, he's chilled out a bit. I'm sure he'll get an angry letter, at worst."
Verdant was not convinced.
"Speaking of Philiana, her practical husband wants to see you again."
Noctave's eyes grew wide. "Come again?"
"Yes, Tenebrisi hasn't gotten over you yet. For the apparent 'lesser of two evils' he gets on my nerves. At least Umbrum knew when to quit!"
"But-but I'm with Dia! We had sex and everything! I thought he knew!"
Verdant was surprised at the "sex" part. She wasn't so open about these things most of the time. "He knew about the first part, at least."
