Chapter 16
Moonflower never slept.
The power of the full moon kept her energized, never thinking to rest. She never came inside the castle, preferring the company of her garden over the company of her parents.
Her plants never judged her, never argued amongst themselves, or felt miserable. Least not with her around.
She took special care of each and every plant in her garden, and planted many more over the week. They were like her precious children.
One night, Umbrum was feeling restless. He was always a bit nocturnal, but the stress of running the abyss and feeling isolated from his family caused him great insomnia. He felt lonely, and wanted to do something productive.
He approached Moonflower, who flinched once she heard someone there. She relaxed, and went back to her gardening.
He stood there, awkward, not knowing what to do.
"Can I help you in any way?" Moonflower nodded. "Well...If it doesn't trouble you too much, can you remove the circle of misery? Please? I think I can handle pests on my own."
Umbrum sighed. I guess Noctave doesn't like seeing living creatures in pain and misery. He summoned his staff and undid the spell.
Umbrum looked sullen, head bowed. Moonflower tugged on his Prussian blue robe to get his attention.
Avoiding eye contact, Moonflower suggested." If you want to help me with my garden, you could pull out the mugworts. I mean...if you want to."
Umbrum was a productive weed puller once he identified the enemy. In 20 short minutes, the mugwort population in the garden was no more.
But as he threw the last patch of mugwort, he accidentally stepped on some seedlings.
Moonflower looked at him, absolutely horrified. He killed baby plants right in front of her. Her baby plants.
Umbrum was oblivious. "Why are you looking at me like that, Moonflower?"
Trembling like a leaf, Moonflower said. "You killed them. You killed them right in front of me..." Her eyes began to water.
Umbrum looked down and saw he stepped on a couple of seedlings, who were now absolutely crushed. Moonflower began to cry.
Umbrum wasn't sure how to help Moonflower. He was strongly against reviving the dead, but what else could he do?
Noxis better not hold this against me.
He used his staff to revive the seedlings. Moonflower's expression went from grief to delight as she saw them return to life. "Thank you, Umbrum!"
"Just call me "Father"." Umbrum became defensive. "Don't tell anyone. understand?" Moonflower nodded, eyes wide.
