37: Twenty-One Days After

Dean

We've been here for an entire day, and so far we aren't allowed to leave our rooms. We can walk out into the hall, but that is about it, and it's beginning to really tick me off. When are we going to get to get to see the people we were promised we'd see? This is just like a prison, and I can tell Mark is getting worried about all of what's going on with what they let us do and what they don't.

"I don't like this," he speaks up after a moment, chewing on a piece of gum he got from his gum supply he took from the grocery store. "I don't like how they won't let us go anywhere. What are they hiding?" I once thought that there was something going on, then I thought I was overthinking everything, but now I'm back to where I think there's something going on. And I don't like it at all.

"I don't know, but there's something going on that I'm not exactly fond of," I sigh, wondering if this was the right choice to come here. "Do you really think the radical attacked just because he didn't think that Norovians and humans shouldn't be in a confined space together?" I ask. "I just don't find that a legitimate reason to attack."

"He was a human, Dean, God knows they're messed up in the head," he half laughs.

"Not all of them are," I defend, knowing one among the billions that inhabit this Earth--or billions that did--that isn't messed up in the head.

"Ella is different," he agrees. "I like her, a lot."

"Calm down," I laugh as I see his eyebrows wiggle in my direction. "You're a bit too young for her. You don't care that she's human?" I can't help but ask, Norovians would never even admit they like to be around a human, let along crush on them. And here I was a Norovian that wanted to be a human when we came over. My parents wouldn't have liked that if they knew and I suddenly feel slightly ashamed.

"Age is but a number," he sighs. "And no, I don't care that she's a human. She's not like the rest of them. Does it bother you that she's human?" He asks, and I think back to the first time I met her.

"It used to," I shrug. "But not anymore. She's a whole new species all on her own, and I can't really describe it."

"What do you mean?" He asks as he sits up in his bed and leans back against the wall.

"She doesn't have a lot of human qualities inside, and she doesn't deserve to be grouped with such monkeys as the humans. She deserves something more, I could swear she had Norovian blood in her. I would believe it if they found it." Mark just stares at me for a few seconds, before shaking his head smiling. "What?"

"Nothing," he mutters. "Nothing at all, I was just thinking."

"About what?"

"Nothing," he promises and I'm just about to force the truth out of him, until a guard opens our door and gives us our lunch.

"Hey!" I say as I get off my bed and walk over to him. "When can we see the people that came with us?" I ask, hoping he'll tell me I can go now, I can go and see the person I miss so much although it's only been one day. Ella, what are you doing to me?

"Not yet, they're still not done counting everyone, writing down names, keeping all the records and stuff. When they're done, you'll be able to go see whoever you want, they just don't want to mix everyone and cause a confusion where they have to start writing and counting again. Enjoy your meal." He shuts the door behind him, which makes me think he shut the door in my face just for spite, and I'm tempted to go out there and knock him in the jaw.

"You can have my lunch, I'm full from eating all the supplies in my bag," Mark laughs, before he lies back on his bed.

For once, I'm not hungry either, but I eat anyway, in case I need my strength if something happens. No matter what, I want to be ready and I want to have energy in case I need to use it.
