Chapter 16: Crying, Emotions, and Space (Hey look, it's Steven Universe!)
Fresh heelied into the anti-void, smiling widely. Messing with people like that was such a blast. Getting into people's heads, messing with their feelings, finding out what made them tick, he loved it! He had almost forgotten how great it felt. It had been a while since he'd hurt someone that badly, but now, Ink was definitely hurting thanks to him. He doubted that the artist would be alright for a very long time, and that just made him even more pleased with himself!
Dimly, he wondered why he had been so determined to ruin the creator of universes in the first place. After all, new universes did supply him with new people to possess. Was it just because he had the opportunity? Or was it, maybe, for Error?
He stopped at that thought, frowning. No. Definitely not. It was just to cause chaos! It wasn't like he had felt bad for Error after hearing his story and wanted to make Ink pay for what he had put the other through. It wasn't like he had wanted to help Error with his goal of destroying universes and decided to take out the source. It wasn't like he cared about Error. It was just because he wanted to do it!
Fresh adjusted his YOLO glasses with a grimace, pushing back the unfamiliar warmth he felt in the soul he was occupying. Yep. Nothing more that that. He tried not to think about it anymore, or about the fact that he was acting ridiculously tsundere, as he continued through the anti-void, looking for his glitchy boyfriend.
"Yo, bro, where you at!?" Fresh called out loudly, rolling down the endless white expanse in his super rad heely's. Strangely enough, there was no answer. Not even an echo.
The parasite stopped, feeling a strange sense of unease as he looked around. The place was quiet. Too quiet, almost.
...
Something was wrong...
"Hey, Error, my brah? You in here?" Fresh called out again, beginning to get a bit nervous. Suddenly, an unfamiliar feeling invaded the parasite's mind, cutting through his thoughts like a sharpened knife.
Fear.
He wouldn't have even recognized the emotion if he hadn't felt it in those he possessed so often, but...Fresh was afraid. What if Error had been hurt? Or kidnapped!? Or he left and never came back? What if...what if Error was dead and Fresh would never see him again?
Fresh hated himself for letting the emotion slip through, but the fear came anyways, filling up mind with worry. Before he could contemplate it though, strings came from nowhere, wrapping tightly around the soul of Fresh's host. The parasite only had enough time to look down in surprise before he was pulled harshly backwards through the anti void.
The strings around his soul disappeared when someone grabbed ahold of him from behind, holding him tightly. Fresh scowled, his eyes flaring up with purple flames as he tried to get free, ready to attack whoever this intruder that had hurt his Error was, but then he froze as he heard familiar laughter. The flames in his eyes died down and he stopped fighting as he looked up, familiar yellow eyes shining down at him.
The fear in Fresh's mind was immediately replaced by rage.
"What the H-E double hockey sticks, bro!? That was majorly uncool!" Fresh yelled angrily, only causing Error to laugh even more.
"Oh my god, you should've seen your dumb face." Error snickered, his arms still wrapped around Fresh from behind as he nuzzled his boyfriend's neck with a smile. "That was hilarious. You were so freaking scared! Were you actually worried about me or something?" He teased.
Fresh hesitated a moment, a slight violet blush on his cheekbones, before he rolled his eyes and adjusted his glasses, his usual carefree grin back on his face in an instant. "Pfft, you know I wasn't, homie. Like I've said before. Can't feel. Remember?" The parasite told him, ignoring the warm feelings that surfaced again. Maybe if he pretended they didn't exist, they'd just go away.
Error sighed, looking a bit saddened at the reminder, but he managed a smile anyways. "Yeah, I know." He said. "I still shocked you pretty badly though, didn't I? You've gotta give me credit for that, at least."
Fresh just scoffed. "The only thing you get credit for is being totally lame, dawg!"
Error laughed at Fresh's response, resting his head on the other's shoulder. "Yeah, that is pretty accurate." He admitted with a grin.
Fresh rolled his eyes and pushed Error away, finally managing to break free of the other's grasp. He dusted himself off and adjusted his glasses with a smile as he looked over to the black skeleton. "So, other than bein lame, whatcha been doin while I've been gone? Chillin?"
Error shrugged, putting his hands in his pockets. "Eh, pretty much. To be honest, I was mostly just...thinking."
"About what, dawg?" Fresh inquired, balancing on the wheels of his heely's.
Error smiled, reaching out and grabbing Fresh's hand. His yellow eyes were sparkling brightly as he stared into Fresh's shades, only making the strange emotion the parasite felt grow. "I wanna show you something." Error said.
It took a moment for Fresh to regain his cool again, but he managed a slight nod of his head and an awkward grin. "Uh...alright, bro. Shoot." He replied.
Error smirked and, before Fresh knew it, he was dragged into an open portal.
It was freezing cold on the other side, but there was no snow to be found. Instead, the two were standing on a grassy cliff, glowing flowers surrounding them and bright, glimmering stars looking down on them. The sky was alive, full of twinkling lights, and it was so much more colorful than any normal night sky. Entire galaxies could be seen from this vantage point, and when you looked down, you could see other small planets, only a short distance away. It was beautiful.
Error walked over to the edge of the cliff, letting go of Fresh's hand to sit down and dangle his feet over the edge. The glitch smiled as he stared up at the stars, and looking at him so happy, Fresh couldn't help but smile too. "Welcome to Outertale." Error told him as he looked over at Fresh with a smirk.
Fresh looked around at the brilliant night sky for a moment before he finally sat down next to Error, taking off his shades so he could see the stars a bit more clearly. Although he'd heard of this universe, he'd never actually been there before. It was...almost beyond description.
Almost.
"Wicked radical, dude!" Fresh remarked cheerfully.
Error rolled his eyes at Fresh's comment before turning back to the sky. "I go here all the time between destroying universes." He explained. "I wanted to eradicate this place a long time ago, but...it's so beautiful, I could never do it. Most universes have to live out their existence underground, but this place...they have the entire galaxy. Sure, they're still closed off, but...it's nicer, y'know? Especially since they can look at all these amazing stars."
It was quiet for a second as they sat there, enjoying the view. A slight breeze drifted through the air, the alien flowers surrounding them swaying slightly in the cool air. Suddenly, Fresh grinned, getting an idea. The parasite picked one of the glowing flowers and leaned over to Error with a smile. "I know an even more amazing star." He purred flirtatiously.
Error raised an eyebrow, smirking at him. "Really?"
"Yep! It's you, broski!" Fresh told him enthusiastically, putting an arm around him with a grin and handing him the flower.
Error rolled his eyes, laughing a bit. A slight blue blush was on his cheeks as he looked at the other, twirling the flower in his hands. "Really? Can you be any more corny?"
"Aw, come on. You're the bomb, dude!" Fresh responded cheerfully, leaning on his shoulder with a smile and wrapping his arms around Error's waist.
Error just sighed as he leaned against him too, putting an arm around his boyfriend as he watched the stars with a smile. "Nah. Not really. If anything, you are."
He handed the flower back to Fresh, and the parasite's grin immediately disappeared. That warm, happy feeling came back to Fresh in full, along with an dull ache of sadness. The parasite looked away with a grimace, his grip on Error tightening as he tried to will the feeling away. "...No, I'm not." He grumbled.
Error blinked, looking over at him in surprise. "Wait, really? Usually you'd agree with me on that. You'd call yourself the 'raddest homie in the multiverse' or something lame like that and I'd call you a dork and you'd..." He trailed off, looking a bit worried as he watched Fresh. "...Are you alright?"
Fresh hesitated before giving him a small nod, faking a smile. "Y-yo, bro, course I am! I all up and love lookin at these radical stars with you. They're tubular! Wicked cool! Super...." He went quiet suddenly as he stared down at the flower, and when he spoke again, his voice was empty and cold. "...Why do you love me?"
The question caught Error a bit by surprise, but he smiled, chuckling a bit as he pulled Fresh closer. "Really? That's what's bugging you?"
Fresh immediately pushed him away with a scowl, his cold violet eyes narrowed. "Just answer the question, Error." He growled. His cheerful demeanor was gone, and he didn't even bother to use his normal outdated slang.
Error stared at him a moment, his expression unreadable, before he sighed and looked away. "...I don't know." He finally answered. "I mean, you're...super annoying. And obnoxious. And a jerk. And most of the time, I can barely even stand you. But you're...strangely charming too, I gotta admit. And you're always there for me when I need you. You also have this goofy way of talking that's actually kinda cute, and you get so excited over your lame 90's crap sometimes that you rant about it for hours. And even though I have no idea what you're talking about, I just...like hearing the happiness in your voice..." Error smiled at that, looking like a lovesick fool, before he caught Fresh's cold gaze out of the corner of his eyes and cleared his throat, blushing a bit before he continued. "I uh...I dunno. I guess I just like spending time with you, really. Besides, we're pretty similar. Destroying lives, ruining world's... Match made in heaven, right? Or maybe it would be hell. Heh, that's probably more accurate."
Fresh stayed silent.
Error let out a long sigh, looking down the edge of the cliff at the stars beneath their feet. "Look, I know that you can't feel the same. I get that. I'm not an idiot. I know that you're probably just using me or something, but I...really don't care." He chuckled sadly. "I guess I really am just a bonehead...but...I...I really do love you, Fresh. And I trust you."
Fresh stared at him for a long moment before putting back on his YOLO shades. He remained silent a while, looking frustrated. "But why?" He asked again, almost sounding angry. He just couldn't understand it.
Error shrugged. "Love is weird. You can't really choose who you love. It just happens. You spend time with a person and suddenly, they're all you can think about. You want to be with them all the time. And when you're with them, you're so happy, it almost hurts."
The parasite's eyes narrowed, his hands clenching into fists. Everything that Error was telling him...it didn't make sense.
Error watched Fresh in slight concern. He was acting really off today. It wasn't like him to get so angry or frustrated. In fact...he wasn't even supposed to get angry and frustrated considering his lack of emotions, was he? Error opened his mouth to ask him about it, but suddenly, the parasite grabbed his shirt and slammed him roughly to the ground. Error yelped in surprise, wincing as he looked up at Fresh, his eyes narrowed. "Hey, what's-!?" The glitch started, but he trailed off when he saw the expression on his boyfriend's face.
Fresh's eyes were practically bleeding with purple energy, a scowl on his face and his glasses blank as he stared down from his place on top of Error. He chuckled lowly as he leaned in, a malicious grin finding its way onto his face. In the darkness, Fresh looked even more terrifying than Error had ever seen him. "You really think that you love me?" Fresh sneered. "My little blackberry bro...you don't even know what I am." His grip on Error's shirt tightened, and his voice grew cold and harsh. "I'm a parasite, dawg. A virus. You haven't even seen the real me, so how could you love me?"
Error glared up at Fresh with narrowed eyes, trying not to look fazed as he stared into the dark shades that hid his boyfriend's eyes. "That's because I love you for who you are, not for what you are, you 90's asshole." He retorted.
"For who I am!?" Fresh yelled back, looking enraged. "And who am I to you, Error? Because I all up and know who I am. I'm an emotionless body-snatchin nightmare that all up and thrives on the suffering of others. Do you even know what I could do to you right now, bro?"
Error didn't even flinch, his yellow eyes narrowed. "Do you know what I could do to you?" He questioned dangerously. "I'm the destroyer of entire universes, Fresh. I've killed so many people in my life, and I've enjoyed it. So don't you ever pretend you're any worse than I am."
"Well at least you have emotions! At least you can feel, bro!" Fresh snapped, closing his eyes tightly as he held onto Error's shirt. "You're a moron staying with me like this. What do you expect, dawg!? Don't you get it? I can't feel the same way as you do! I can't feel anything!!" He yelled.
Error's cold demeanor fell away in an instant, his eyes widening in shock as he looked up at Fresh. The two stayed there like that in silence, before finally, Error spoke. "Well...for someone that can't feel, you definitely seem to be feeling an awful lot right now."
Fresh opened his eyes, looking at Error in confusion. That's when he realized the wetness on his face, the feeling of tears running down his eyesockets. All of his anger dissipated, leaving nothing but a deep feeling of despair in his stolen soul. Fresh let go of Error, looking down at his hands, and realized he was trembling.
"B-bro... I can't... I-I'm not supposed to..." Fresh trailed off at the sound of the brokenness in his own voice. He knew that he couldn't deny the aching feelings he had been feeling anymore, and he hated it.
Error got up from the ground slowly, watching Fresh in concern. Without a second thought, he quickly pulled the parasite into his embrace, wrapping his arms around the other and holding him tightly.
With that, Fresh broke down completely, sobbing pitifully into the fabric of Error's jacket. It was like a damn had been opened in Fresh's mind. Everything he had been holding back poured out, and for the first time in his entire life, Fresh felt everything. On that beautiful cliff on the outskirts of the galaxy, Fresh cried, and Error held him through it all.
Eventually, the parasite calmed down, just shaking in Error's arms and sniffling quietly every now and then. After a few minutes longer, he let out a shaky sigh and finally pulled away. He lifted his glasses up, wiping the tears away from his violet eyes and making sure not to meet Error's gaze. "Sorry, bro..." He muttered quietly.
Error watched him silently, still looking a bit worried. They sat there, neither of them saying anything, until Error finally broke the quiet with a question.
"How long?" He asked.
Fresh hesitated a moment, looking guilty. "About a week or so, dawg." He answered. "I wasn't sure what it was at first. I thought it was just my wiggity wack host actin up. Then I thought I could just make these...feelings go away if I pretended it wasn't happenin."
"Did...you want them to go away?"
Fresh looked over to Error in surprise, only to see the other's yellow eyes staring at him, filled with hurt. Fresh looked away again immediately, his expression conflicted. "I'm not supposed to feel, you know that, dawg. It's how I was made. I'm supposed to be an emotionless, chaos causing monster. Feelings and all of those out of wack emotions just get all up in the way of our purpose. It's dangerous, bro. You open yourself up to gettin hurt. You open those you care about up to gettin hurt..." He trailed off, noticing the flower from before laying on the ground, broken and slightly wilted. Picking it up from it's fragile stem, he stared it it for a while, feeling tears welling up in his eyes again. "I don't want you to get hurt, bro."
Error sighed, scooting over to him and putting his arms around the other. "You're an idiot." He grumbled. "I can take care of myself. And so can you. Nothing's gonna happen to either of us. I promise. Emotions or not."
"B-but, bro, what if-" Fresh started, but Error quickly interrupted him.
"I'm a destroyer of universes with a high LV and an HP so glitched out, it's almost impossible to kill me. You're a body jumping, annoying eldritch abomination that can possess anyone or anything and feeds off the suffering of others." Error smiled at him warmly. "I'm pretty sure we don't have anything to worry about."
"...Yeah, I guess you're right, broski..." Fresh relented. He still looked uncertain, but Error's words definitely helped. Then he realized he had started crying again and groaned in slight annoyance, wiping his tears away with a frown. "Ugh... Emotions are totes unfresh, dude. How do you deal with this sicknasty shiz?"
Error shrugged, chuckling a bit. "I dunno. To be honest, it really is a pain most of the time. But...not all emotions are bad, I guess."
The stars shone above them just as brightly as before, but now they seemed so much more beautiful. The dazzling pinpricks of light were scattered across the colorful hues of the night, covering the sky like splattered paint on a blank canvas. Fresh leaned against Error, his head resting on the other's shoulder as he stared up at the brilliant sight. The sadness, the anger, the fear that he felt, was all gone now, replaced by that all too familiar indescribable warmth in his soul. He wondered for a moment if that was what happiness felt like, but he quickly decided against it. He knew vaguely what happiness was supposed to be, and although he was pretty sure he was happy, he knew there was a better, stronger word for what he had been feeling lately, what had caused this whole mess in the first place.
"Hey, bro?"
"What?"
"...I love you."
Error froze, his yellow eyes widening in shock at the words. He turned to look at Fresh, wondering if he had misheard him.
Fresh looked a bit embarrassed, a violet blush dusting his cheeks, but Error could see the sincerity in his expression, the hearts that had replaced the O's on his glasses. "I said it before, back when I all up and possessed Ink. It was just a slip up. I...didn't think I meant it back then, but...I do now, dawg. Or at least I think I do... All I know is that I feel all warm on my inner-sides when I'm around you. And I feel...happy. But it's more than happiness really. It's like..." The parasite hesitated, trying to think of the right words to describe it. "I wanna be with you, dawg. And I wanna help you and protect you and never let you go. Like...I'd put you before myself in any situation. Before my own survival even. You dig?"
Error stared at him for a long time, almost in disbelief. He never expected to hear any of those words from the other, but now...
Fresh, the emotionless parasite, the 90's nightmare, the virus, actually loved him. Just the sheer fact that someone cared about him that much was hard to accept, but...Fresh? A few months ago, he would've thought that was ridiculous. Heck, a few days ago he would've, but...it was true. He could tell it was true. And...
"I love you too." Error said, before he even realized it.
At his response, Fresh soul soared, his expression breaking into a huge grin. "Radical!!" He exclaimed excitedly, embracing the other in a tight hug and looking happier than Error had ever seen him before.
Error couldn't help but laugh at the other's reaction as he hugged him back, still smiling brightly. When they finally split apart, Error was surprised when Fresh kissed him.
The glitch was a bit flustered, his cheeks dusted with a light blush when Fresh pulled away, but the parasite had a bright grin on his face, cuddling up against Error again immediately and looking up at the sky. They stayed there for hours, the coldness of the air barely bothering them at all. It seemed as if they could stay there forever, the warmth in their broken souls and the company of each other all that mattered as they watched the stars above.
"Yo, dawg, this is great!" Fresh remarked cheerfully after a little while. "I mean...I always thought emotions were dumb and...well, yeah, they still are, but...this kinda makes it worthwhile, y'know? I could get used to this. Heck, I bet we could go up against anythin like this, broski!"
Error chuckled a bit, still smiling. "Yeah, I...guess we could." He responded.
It was silent for a few another few minutes before Fresh spoke again, a slight hint of worry in his voice. "Hey... We'll...be together forever, right?" He asked. "You ain't just gonna ditch me or anything, right?"
Error was taken aback by the question, shocked that Fresh would think that. He rolled his eyes and pulled the parasite closer, kissing him. "Of course, you neon asshole. I wouldn't just leave you alone like that."
"Really?"
"Duh. I wanted to stay with you even when you were an annoying 90's jerk with no feelings. Now you're an annoying 90's jerk that has feelings, and..."
Error stopped, thinking for a moment. "...well...not much has changed really. You're probably still gonna be a complete ass."
Fresh laughed and shrugged his shoulders, grinning. "Yeah, guess that's true." He replied cheerfully.
Error rolled his eyes. "Look, Emotions or not, I'll be there, alright? No matter what." Error put his hand over Fresh's and interlocked their fingers with a smile. "Together forever."
Fresh stared at their hands, a genuine smile finding its way to his face. "Heh... Yeah, bro..."
"...Together forever."
