Chapter 12: Two sides of the same coin
Error came back into the anti-void after a while, covered in dust and holding a new human soul. He snapped his fingers and strings came down from the ceiling, wrapping around the soul tightly and pulling it up out of sight to join the rest of his "collection." Error smiled as he watched it disapear. Welp, that was one more filthy abomination destroyed.
With that out of the way, he plopped down on the ground, taking his knitting needles out and putting on his large, round, circular glasses. He started to knit to pass the time as he waited for Fresh to get back, humming quietly to himself as he worked.
As he continued to knit, he kept thinking back to those three words that Fresh had said. There was no way the parasite had meant that, but...it still made him ridiculously happy to think back on it. It was almost pathetic how his heart skipped a beat, how his corrupted soul filled with warmth...
Error hated himself for how much he loved Fresh. He knew well that Fresh couldn't feel the same, he knew that the parasite was probably only using him, he knew that he was being stupid and delusional, but he just couldn't help it. The goofy and grossly endearing way he talked, his teasing remarks, the happiness in his voice when he would talk about stupid 90's crap that didn't make any sense while he cuddled closely against Error...
Error was in love. And Fresh was still...well...Fresh...
"Hey, brah! Whatcha makin?" A voice asked cheerfully from behind him.
Error yelped, dropping his knitting needles with a start as he turned to face the intruder. It took him a moment to realize it was only Fresh. The parasite was obviously not possessing Ink anymore, now sporting his usual bright colorful jacket, purple shirt, orange basketball shorts, hat, and heelies. The only difference was a multicolored scarf wrapped around his neck. He was probably possessing a Sans from a genocide run.
When Fresh saw Error, he snickered to himself, grinning. "Nice glasses, bro." He teased him.
Error just rolled his eyes. "Thanks. I need them to see." He retorted grumpily, taking them off and putting them away.
Fresh pouted as he sat down next to Error. "Aw... But you look cute with them, dude! You should totes wear them more often."
Error blushed a bit. "Ugh... No way. I look stupid with them on." He protested.
Fresh scoffed. "I don't think so, bro. Besides, that isn't saying much. You always look stupid."
Error glared at him. "Wow. Thanks for that." He replied in slight annoyance.
"No problem, dude!" Fresh said cheerfully.
Error rolled his eyes, going back to his knitting, but after a moment, he looked at Fresh curiously. "So, what happened with Ink? You didn't do anything too bad, did you?"
Fresh grinned, adjusting his hat. "Well, I didn't kill him at least. That's all that I promised. I left that lame dude in Underswap when I went to all up and find a new host though, so hopefully our Blueberry bro found him before he bit the dust. It was wicked fun possessing him though. I know he had a rad time for sure."
"Well, you probably scarred him for life, but at least he survived." Error grumbled.
Fresh laid across his lap, grinning up at him as he booped Error's nose. Or at least the place where Error would have a nose if he wasn't a skeleton. "Yo, bro, what'd you expect? Scarring people for life is what I do!" He chirped.
"Heh. Yeah, I know." Error responded with a smile, leaning down and kissing him.
When Error pulled away, there was a light violet blush on Fresh's cheeks. The parasite quickly recovered though, putting his hands behind his head with his usual grin on his face, still laying in Error's lap. "So, what's the deal with this Ink homie anyways? Who is he?"
Error scowled at the mention of Ink. "Ink is a jerk." He grumbled.
"That don't tell me much, bro." Fresh replied with a frown.
Error sighed. "Fine..." He hesitated a bit, fidgeting with his knitting needles before putting them down on the ground. "I was alone in the anti-void for a long time." He began after a moment of silence. "I woke up here with only a vague idea of who I was and broken memories of who I used to be. I barely even remembered anything, except the fact that I wasn't supposed to be here, and something terrible had happened to cause it. I tried to get out at first, but no matter how far I walked or how many gaster blasters I fired into the distance, there wasn't an end. And so after a while, I just...gave up. I slept and slept, until even that got boring. So then I screamed, I cried, I yelled... I thought that...someone might hear me eventually. Someone might help. But nobody came. And eventually...the screams started screaming back..." Error started glitching severely, but he clenched his hands into fists and forced himself to keep going. "At that point, this place was a prison." He continued, his voice cold and harsh. "I needed to find some way to escape. I needed to get back to my home. I needed to get back to my friends, my...my brother... At that point, I didn't even think to consider that maybe...they were gone already gone."
Fresh looked up at him sympathetically. "Bro, you...you don't have to-"
"No. I need to." Error growled.
Fresh went silent and after a moment, Error kept going, determined to finish. "Eventually, I figured out how to manipulate code to open up doorways in the multiverse, and I found myself in Snowdin, in front of the Ruins door. I was so happy! Although everything seemed unfamiliar and distant...I thought that I was finally home. I quickly realized that it wasn't actually my timeline, but that was alright for me. I would visit anyways, talk to the Toriel behind the door for hours, walk around the forest, and just...enjoy having somewhere other than the anti-void to go to." Error laughed coldly, a bitter grin on his face. "Of course, that didn't last... Everything fell apart soon enough. Tori realized I wasn't her Sans and...I realized that this wasn't only not my timeline. It wasn't even my universe. No one in it was the way that they were supposed to be. They were imposters, they were mistakes, they were nothing but filthy abominations... And so I flipped out. I killed them all. And when I was done, when I was surrounded by their dust...I felt happy. I knew that those abominations were gone for good, and I knew that I had done the right thing. It felt so good to rid the world of those imposters. It felt so good to destroy. And then...Ink showed up."
Fresh waited for him to continue, a frown on his face.
Error sighed, his glitches dying down a bit. "Ink saw what I had done, and he was furious at me for destroying his creations. I argued against him. After all, there's a way that things are supposed to be. How could he take the personalities and lives of my friends, and twist them into something barely recognizable? I hated him for everything he stood for, but he insisted that the people in that universe had a right to live, and that I couldn't destroy people's lives like that. We fought for a while before eventually, I fled to the anti-void again. After that, I figured out who he was through word across the multiverse, and that just made me hate him even more. You see, his universe had been destroyed long ago. No one knew why or by who, but with his friends and family dead and his home gone, Ink was left alone in an empty void with nothing but his thoughts, just like I was. Unlike me however, he figured out how to manipulate code in a different way. He could create things out of nothing and, instead of going crazy and suffering in that place, he turned it into an entire world, based on the scattered memories of the one he had lost. Then, he kept going. He kept creating worlds so that he wouldn't be lonely, making sure each one was unique, and even more awful abominations would pop up in the multiverse. He wasn't alone anymore. And while he was happy and surrounded by the dirty mistakes he called friends, I was trapped, scared, alone..." Error trailed off, sighing. "We're two sides of the same coin. We started off the same. Alone in a white void after our universes were destroyed. Hell, we're the same fucking person! If things had gone differently, maybe I would have been the creator of those abominations. Maybe I could have been happy. But...I ended up like this instead. A murderer. A filthy glitch." Error growled.
Fresh stared at him for a few moments, his glasses and expression blank. Then, he got up and hugged Error tightly. Error hesitated for a bit before hugging him back, burying his face in Fresh's scarf to hide the tears filling up his eyesockets. "Sorry..." Error murmured. "I haven't really told all of that to anyone before. Not even the voices."
"Yo, don't sweat it, dawg." Fresh responded quietly. "It's alright. You ain't all up and alone anymore. You got me, bro! And Blue. You've got plenty of homies."
Error smiled sadly as he held onto Fresh. "Heh...yeah..." He said. "I guess you're right."
They stayed in each other's arms for a long while, neither of them wanting to let go, until eventually, Error pulled away with a sigh. "You don't have to do this, Fresh. Thanks for being here for me, but...I know you don't actually care."
Fresh seemed almost sad as he looked back at Error, the shades he was wearing still empty of their usual bright lettering. "Heh... Yeah, right..." He murmured quietly, looking down at the floor as he adjusted his hat, trying not to meet Error's eyes. "Sorry, bro."
"Don't worry about it. It's not your fault..." Error mumbled as he looked away.
Fresh stayed quiet. Neither of them said a word, neither of them even looked at the other, and there was a heavy feeling of sadness in the air. Eventually, Fresh got up from the floor and left, and Error was alone once again.
(A/N: Hey, guys! So, a few things I need to address.
1. I changed my username on here (SavvyNinjaGirl -> DapperBird) and I drew an actual cover for this story because I was bored.
2. I don't know if I'll be able to do more than one update a day like I was before, but I'll try to. Just know that there will at least be one update every day. Even if that update is very late at night like this one is.
3. Yes, I know that this deviates from what I've seen in most fics on here, but on the creator of Ink's Tumblr (comyet) I couldn't find anything about Inktale as a whole. I couldn't find an Ink!Papyrus or an Ink!Undyne or anything about the universe itself, there was just Ink!Sans. So then I started thinking about why Ink hates Error for destroying universes in the first place, and I thought...what if his own universe had been destroyed? What if he and Error are more alike than they think, but instead of going crazy and starting to destroy after his universe was gone, Ink decided to create. So yep, that's my idea at least. I could be completely wrong, but I thought it was a cool thought.
Anyways, I hope you guys like this chapter! It took me a long time and a lot of drafts to write it and, surprisingly, it's actually a little bit longer than the last one was! Thank you guys so much for reading, and thank you for all the feedback. This story is already almost at 100 likes!!)
