Chapter 3

Day 1461 since initial outbreak.

Danny woke up to the sound of coughing from the room next to theirs. He peeked down from the top bunk to find the other two sleeping soundly.  They haven't had a comfortable bed to sleep in for weeks. Staring at the ceiling, he wondered if the El Vivientes were trustworthy. He hopped down from the top bunk, making sure he didn't wake the others, and went to pet Rocket. He barked with joy. Danny pondered on how Rocket's owners are most possibly dead- or undead- right now. A knock on the door came shortly after, followed by Sam's voice

"Get up,  we're starting the meeting. " Danny got up and shook the other two awake.

"Guys get up, they said the meeting's starting."

They were reluctant do get up but their fear of El Vivientes got them wide awake. They had no idea what this group was capable of.

"Meeting?" Bent asked, confused.

"I don't know but that was the best sleep I've had in weeks so we better comply." Alex replied. They all got into a new change of clothes and went out to the main lobby where they saw a couple dozen kids sitting in chairs and couches, all facing the fireplace.

"Well look who's alive." Sam commented. The trio took their seats on the floor in front anticipating whatever Sam's got to say.

"You three," he pointed at the trio, "come join me here in front."

They got up and stood beside him, nervous for what's about to happen. State your name and what you can do to help El Vivientes.

Alex went first, "Alex Villanueva, I'm good with a semi automatic and any handhelds. Melee isn't my forte but I can manage." Sam then gestured to Danny who was right beside her.

"Now you."

"Daniel Rodriguez, Melee and I can shoot a crossbow- if I had one." Danny followed.

"Now the one on the left."

Bent sighed. He hated being vulnerable but he had to do it, "Bennet Navarro, I use a hatchet and learned how to box at age 4."

"You all seem to know how to fight in some way shape or form, you're joining the milita. Any objections?" Sam told the trio. No one objected because they all agreed, the trio were some of the best fighters they've ever seen in a long time.

"Okay lets get some breakfast before noon." Sam told the group. They all went to the cafeteria, where rice and corned beef was served.

Alex was standing next to the coffee stand where she poured instant coffee into a mug of boiling water as Danny approached her.

"Hey can I get a sip of that?" He asked reluctantly.

"Yeah sure, its kinda hot though be careful." She replied.

He took the mug and let the hot, bittersweet liquid trickle down his throat. He hasn't had a good 'cuppa joe' since before Day One.

"Thanks, I needed that."

"No problem."

Danny sat down beside Bent and immediately dug in, barely taking time to chew his food.

"Dude slow down you'll throw up and all that food'll be useless." Alex said as she approached the table. Danny ignored her and scraped his plate clean in a matter of seconds. She sighed in defeat and started to eat her breakfast.

"What's up, Newbies?" A female voice said from behind them. The three simultaneously turned around to see a girl, a little older than them, maybe 17, with long brown hair and blue eyes. She sat down next to Bent.

"I'm Birdy." She extended her hand to Alex who, at first, hesitated but eventually shook it.

"Im Alex, this is Bent and-"

"Yeah I know, Danny. I was there for the meeting earlier."

"Well, anyway, what do you need, Birdy?" Alex asked.

"Sam told me to show y'all around, tell you the rules, all that yada yada. So, any questions?" She replied, looking around at the three.

"I do have one question.", Danny started.

"Ask away."

"Why- Why aren't there any adults?" He stuttered.

Birdy looked upset for a moment then went back to her own chill self again.

"A few years back, when I was about 15, a bunch of kids went missing. It was chaos. For some reason our old leader, Mark Loughty, he had everyone over 18 join him to go look for the kids 'cause his daughter was one of the missing. Never came back."

Silence fell over the group. The trio looked at each other not knowing what to say.

"You guys can speak up, I lost my family long before the apocalypse. There was no one for me to mourn." Birdy broke the silence.

"Well, how about we just get started with the tour, yeah?"

"Yeah"

Birdy led the three to a room full of weaponry and ammo, then an infirmary, a shooting range, a lab, 7 bathrooms, a garage, and a bunch of other rooms for various uses. The tour seemed to last a mere minute to he trio.

"Since y'all are part of the Militia, you have meetings in the command center. Speaking of which, there's a meeting later today at 3. Don't be late, Blake hates that."

"Who's Blake?" Danny asked.

"Blake Walker? He's the worst asshole you'll ever meet, but a great leader. Just follow his orders and you'll be fine."

The trio thanked Birdy and went their own ways, exploring the rest of the lab. Danny checked his watch, it was 10:24 am. With nothing to do, he went to the armory and grabbed a crossbow. Feeling the clean metal of the riser, he barely noticed the sound of a gun cock behind him.

"Who are you and what the hell are you doing in my armory?" A girl said with a slight spanish accent. Danny immediately dropped the crossbow, which was fortunately unloaded, and put his hands up.

"Don't shoot! I'm Danny and I was just checking out the crossbows here." Danny said with a bit of panic in his voice. He felt the barrel of the gun dig into his back.

"I don't know a Danny and I know everyone here. Now tell me, honestly, who the hell you are and show me your ID or I'll fuckin' shoot you right here right now." The girl threatened.

"He's telling the truth, Sarah. Put the gun down." Sam walked in and interruped, "You woke up late so we started the meeting without you. He's a newbie." The girl lowered her gun and Danny lowered his hands in relief.

"Sorry 'bout that Danny. Sarah's really protective of the armory." Sam reassured him.

"Nah man, It's cool. What ID was she talking about earlier?" Danny asked.

"Oh, you'll get yours in a couple days. Everyone here has an ID to make sure that they're part of us and not some loon from the outside. Sarah, this is Danny Rodriguez. Danny, this is Sarah Ortuno- my sister. She's in charge of keeping track of the weaponry and ammo. "

"Rodriguez. You Latino too?" Sarah asked.

"No, I'm Filipino but my crew and I snuck onto a plane to get here 'cause the country got overrun in a matter of days."

"Damn bro, that sucks. Well, look I'm sorry for that whole thing earlier. I get paranoid at times." Sarah apologized.

"It's okay. I understand."
