I stood tensely on the street corner in front of the souvenir store, waiting for my mother who would pick me up there. I did this every time after training, I stood there with my school bag on my shoulders and my gym bag in my hand. Normally I stood here alone, the late autumn was approaching and so it got dark relatively early, otherwise I could find my way home by myself, but my parents told me to wait, because it could be dangerous at night.
Usually I stood there for a quarter of an hour without a soul crossing the area, but on this day it was different, because on my right side there was a little girl, about my age, she had long brunette hair, wore a red coat and a blue scarf. I hardly dared to look at her, what was she doing there? Was she also waiting to be picked up? All these questions circled through my mind when I heard a voice, it was soft but firm. "Hello, you? Are you also waiting for someone to pick you up? You're from the soccer field over there, right?" I was totally astonished that she actually spoke to me, that I didn't really question how she knew about the soccer, I assumed she had seen the bag. "Yes..." I returned shyly, which was strange for me, since I usually didn't seem to be reserved at all. She continued with her "inspection" and stared at me with a brisk look that made me shiver. Embarrassed, I combed through my then platinum blonde hair and she started talking again. "You know, if we both just stand around waiting, we could become " talking friends". My name is Mariella, call me May, I came up with the nickname myself, cool, isn't it? What's your name?" Still baffled, I knew that she surely didn't invent her nickname herself and at the same time I felt a bit stiff, unable to speak normally.
"Howard... my name is Howard..." I pressed out weakly and she stared at me demandingly, I avoided her gaze. "Howard and? Don't you have a nickname?" she then inquired sassyly and still stared at me with interest. I don't think anyone had ever paid me so much attention before, so I was a kind of perplexed that I stammered: "Hardy, my friends call me Hardy" She smiled and reached out her hand to me. "Nice to meet you Hardy!" and then she tilted her head a little and asked. "Say, why are you playing soccer?" I swallowed. I didn't quite understand that question. Yeah, why did she think that I played soccer? "Because it's fun" I argued and looked into her big blue eyes, which clearly expressed that this answer did not satisfy her.
"Is it really so much fun to kick a lame, boring ball in front of you? You look like a wet sack and the risk of injury is greater than the chance of being bitten by a shark" - What did May want to tell me with this? That people often get bitten by sharks, or that soccer was just a dangerous sport...? In order to defend myself, I tossed around some pretty bad arguments. "Oh no, you're just saying that because you've never played soccer before and that's because you're a GIRL!" I exclaimed outraged and wondered why she started laughing again. "Yes yes, girls don't play soccer, but what if I had played on a team before. However, it was boring, always doing the same thing, doesn't that get on your nerves? Besides, you can't become anything else but a professional soccer player and they're almost all extremely lame, that's what you want to be?" she clarified and I thought. Somehow what she said was true, but were really all the professionals like that?
"Mom and Dad always say, you just shouldn't aim too high, work hard for it, then you won't be able to fall so low." I emptied my mind in front of her. She looked at me with big eyes and blinked a few times before she asked.
"Does the rest of your family also play soccer?" I nodded and replied, since she couldn't know who belonged to my family. "Yes, Mom and Dad play in the national team, my older brother Tim is in the U14 of the Winzberger Dragons and even my twin sister Thalia plays in the girls' team of the club. I enlightened her.
"Well, you see, then it's not just a sport for boys! But I tell you, dancing is much cooler, believe me," she shouted, shouting, because a big black car just drove by, to which she was running, before May got in, she waved to me and yelled something in my direction. "Well, see you again!"
So there I was, alone again, with a strange feeling that flowed through my entire body. It reminded me strongly of the excitement before receiving Christmas presents. Was it triggered by her? If so, I was desperate to see her again, I liked that flutter in my stomach.
