Brendon's POV

I smiled as Dallon and I kept our foreheads together. I knew that Atlas and Kai would be back soon, but I tried not to think about it all too much.
I was scared to see what Kai would say. Kai was older than me, but younger than Atlas, yet Atlas still listened to him. I believe that Atlas was scared of him so he tried to do anything in his power to keep on Kai's good side.
I finally pulled away from Dallon, and I just leaned into him again like I had been before, I was comfortable in his hold and I felt safe.
"A-Are you s-sure you're ok-okay? I know A-Atlas is st-strong," I say, and I look up at him, my hand moving to rest on his cheek as he looks down at me. I can't help but smile a little.
"Yeah, baby, I'm okay. I promise," Dallon replies, and I just nod a little gently.
I pull my hand away from his cheek, and I sigh a little quietly, not looking forward to Atlas and Kai showing up. Dallon and I could honestly just swim back to shore and go home before they even came back, but I knew that they could be close, and if they were, Atlas would easily hunt us down.
I get caught up in my own thoughts, and only when I hear splashing do I get drawn out of them. I sit up a little, and I can immediately see Kai's tail in the water since it was a bright purple color. I whimper softly, and Dallon keeps me close to his side.
I see Atlas grab onto the rock and pull himself up, Kai shortly following.
Kai was about as big as Atlas, and about as strong too. He had the cuffs I had told Dallon about around his wrists, showing that he was important. He also had a shark tooth necklace, but I had given that to him one time and he just never took it off. I knew Atlas was jealous that I didn't give it to him, but it was kinda funny to me.
"K-Kai!" I say, as he looks at me, and he offers me a gentle smile.
Atlas growls, and that earns him a hard smack to the head from Kai. I giggle at that, and Atlas just rolls his eyes and scoots away from Kai a little so he couldn't hit him again.
"Hello, Brendon, and I presume you're Dallon?" Kai says, and he looks from me and then to Dallon, his voice gentle.
Dallon nods, and Kai hums softly.
"I'm Kai, but I'm guessing you already know that," he says, and Dallon nods again. I was honestly surprised that Kai was being so nice and he wasn't lecturing me already like Atlas had done.
"So I heard that you've been staying with the humans?" He then asks, and Atlas smirks a bit.
I timidly nod, and I latch onto Dallon a little tighter than I had before, wanting to stay as close to him as possible in case Kai or Atlas decided to lash out like Atlas had done before.
"Y-Yes.. but I've be-been perfectly s-safe! Da-Dally takes c-care of m-me, Kai. He d-doesn't threaten m-me to st-stay with him, and h-he doesn't ha-have a harpoon g-gun at the re-ready!" I say, and I glare at Atlas as I say the last few parts. I did end up seeing Kai smile when I said 'Dally', but I didn't think anything of it.
Atlas glares, and he growls a bit, but Kai flicks him with his tail.
"What are those marks on your neck? Has he hurt you?" Kai asks, and he keeps his tone gentle.
"They're called hickeys.. or love bites. They don't hurt, and they're just marks. They end up fading as well," Dallon says, and he points to the marks on his neck that were fading. I'm surprised Atlas hadn't already given him the run through with that.
Kai nods gently, and he pulls himself up onto the rocks more, closer to me and Dallon. I flinch a little, and Dallon covers me with his arm, but Kai doesn't do anything.
"Why aren't you mad, Kai?! Do you not realize how dangerous of a situation Brendon is in?! He could be killed, Kai! Killed! And we wouldn't know about it because he would be up there with the stupid humans!" Atlas yells, and Kai just sits and watches him.
"Atlas.." Kai starts to say, but Atlas just interrupts him.
"No! He's in danger! You know how skittish Brendon is! He's scared of every little thing! Brendon you don't belong there! He doesn't love you! Watch! He's probably just using you!" Atlas continues, his tone loud.
I flinch a little and I have to wrap my arms around my tail to hide my shaking hands. I just take his yelling once again though, expecting Kai to join in at any second now. I continue to look up at him still, remembering the countless times he had gotten mad cause I wasn't looking at him while he was speaking.
I whimper softly, and I try to hide myself in Dallon a little as I felt tears come to my eyes. Why wouldn't Atlas just drop it? Didn't he and Kai understand I wasn't in trouble?
Dallon's POV

I glared at Atlas, as I wrapped my arms protectively around Brendon. If he had brought Kai to fix the problem, he didn't have to keep yelling at my boyfriend.
"He's going to kill you, Brendon! Are you even listening!?" Atlas shouted. "He's using you! You've heard of humans like that! He's probably one of them pretending to care about you so he can get what he wants!"
I felt something hot hit my skin, and I realized that Brendon was crying. I looked over at him, as he hastily wiped them away. I pulled him off of my lap, and pushed him against the rock we had been leaning on.
Brendon gasped a little, as I put myself in between him, Kai, and Atlas. I reached back, finding his hand, holding it tightly. "Atlas, leave him the hell alone." I growled, moving to sit up a little, ready to run at the two mermen just in case.
"D-Dally." Brendon whimpered, grabbing my shoulder, trying to pull me back down. I shook him off gently, still glaring at the two in front of me.
Kai sighed. "Atlas, calm down, I have it under control."
"But, Kai-" Atlas said, but Kai held his hand up as a sign to make him stop. He rolled his eyes, and crossed his arms over his chest, giving up.
"Brendon, this man hasn't hurt you, has he?" Kai asked gently. "At all, in any way?"
Brendon shook his head quickly, still shaking a little as he held onto me. "H-he p-promised h-he'd never h-hurt me."
Kai nodded. "Has he ever promised to give you something? Money? Something shiny maybe? Has he ever threatened you?" Brendon shook his head to all of the questions.
"I-I love h-him, a-and he l-loves me." He said softly, smiling up at me. I smiled back, ruffling his hair.
"Kai, I promise he's in no danger, I'd never hurt him, and he's the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me, I would do nothing that would be bad for him."
Kai nodded again, as Atlas sat up again. "Kai, this is stupid! You don't hear how stupid this is!? What if other humans find Brendon!? What then? What if he tells other ones about us?"
Kai shook his head, sighing. "Dallon, I trust you, just never talk about this meeting to anyone other than you and Brendon." He turned to look at my boyfriend, smiling at him. "You got a good one, B, keep him close."
Brendon giggled, nodding. "I w-will, K-Kai." I knelt down next to him, kissing his nose. I would've made out with him, but Kai and Atlas being there made me feel awkward touching Brendon.
"Well, I have other things to tend to, have a good day, you two." Kai said. "Let's go, Atlas." Atlas rolled his eyes again, sliding into the water without a word. Kai looked back at us, waving. "Bye, Brendon! Bye, Dallon! It was good to see you!"
"You too, Kai!" I called, as Brendon waved also. I turned back to my boyfriend, smiling. "See, it wasn't that bad, baby! We're okay, even though Atlas was a bitch."
Brendon giggled, getting back in the water. "C-c'mon! I w-wanna swim m-more before th-the sun g-goes down!" I grinned, jumping in next to him. He laughed even more, as I splashed water on him.
We swam for hours, the water washing the whole fiasco that happened earlier from our minds. Brendon would dive down where I couldn't see him anymore, and come back up with shells.
"L-look at th-this one!" He exclaimed, holding up a light pink shell. "It-it's so p-pretty!"
"Just like you, baby." I said, putting the shell in my pocket. (Thank goodness for pockets that had velcro). When I looked back up, Brendon was gone again. Every time he left I would panic a little, worrying where exactly he was.
Luckily he came back up pretty quickly, holding three shells. One was a big white one with barnacles on it, the others were kind of yellowish and they were smaller. "L-look!" He exclaimed, holding out the shells.
"Darling, if you keep giving me shells I'm gonna sink!" I laughed, pointing to my already heavy shorts. "I'll take those three, and those will be the last ones, okay?"
Brendon pouted a little. "C-can I f-find a t-tiny one? J-just one m-more?" I sighed, nodding. He grinned, diving under the water again. I rolled my eyes, smiling. I noticed that it was beginning to get kinda dark, and we should be heading back home, but I couldn't swim back by myself obviously.
Brendon popped back up, beaming at me. "D-Dally! I f-found th-the perfect o-one!" He held out a small, round black stone with little yellow flecks in it. I smiled back at him, putting it in my pocket also. "It-it's for y-you."
"Darling, it's beautiful." I said. "I'll get Tyler to make it into a necklace or a bracelet or something for me."
Brendon cocked his head to the side. "B-but it's a r-rock." I nodded. "A-and Ty-Tyler?" I smiled, trying to hold back a laugh. Tyler didn't look like the kind of person to like making jewelry, but one of his best friends, Jenna, had taught him and Josh how, and he loved it.
"Yeah, Tyler will love this project." I said. "He needs a break from his video games anyway." Brendon giggled again, as we began to swim back to shore.
"C-can we c-come back t-tomorrow? A-and the n-next day? A-and the o-one after th-that?" Brendon asked. I laughed again.
"Sure, Bren, that's fine with me." I said. "Let's just focus on getting back to the house, okay?" He hummed a little in a way for saying 'yes'.
We got to shore, and as soon as we got out of the water, Brendon changed back to having legs. He fell onto the sand, both of us not expecting the sudden transformation. I picked him up quickly, rushing both of us behind the rock we had been by earlier. I grabbed the shorts and handed them to him. "Here, baby doll."
"Th-thanks, D-Dally!" Brendon said his legs shaking a little as he tried to put the shorts on. I gripped his waist to steady him, kissing him softly. We stood there for a while, our lips connected, our arms wrapped around each other. I finally broke away so I could pick Brendon up, and I saw a small pout on his face, not happy that we had stopped kissing.
"Hey! There you are!" Ryan exclaimed from the kitchen. "Josh! Don't burn the damn food!"
"Do it yourself if you'd think you'd do a better job." Josh snapped back, turning to smile at us. "Food will be ready in ten minutes, okay?"
We nodded, walking past the couch, Tyler sitting there playing one of his games. "T-Ty! We h-have sh-shells!" Brendon said, reaching into my pockets, getting confused by the velcro.
Tyler turned around, his eyes widening at the shells. "Wow! These are awesome! And this rock is super cool!"
"W-will you m-make it into a-a neck-necklace or s-something for D-Dally?" Brendon asked. Tyler nodded, turning back to his game.
"I'll be done with it in the morning!" He called over his shoulder, as we went into the bathroom.
"Thanks, Ty!" I called, shutting the door. "Okay, baby, let's get in the shower."
The hot water felt good, since the ocean had been kinda cold when we swam, but the only thing that felt better than that was Brendon's lips on mine. We didn't have to worry about someone coming in or anything, it was just us, all of the feelings from earlier leaving us for a while. I raked my fingers through his dark hair, as he kept a firm grip on the back of my head and neck. We were probably using up all the hot water, and Ryan was going to kill me for making his water bill skyrocket, but I really didn't care right now, all I cared about was this moment with my boyfriend...and maybe the thought of what we were going to have for dinner, but Brendon was more important than that, so I kept 99% of my attention on him.
"I love you." I whispered, as I turned off the water when we finished our shower. I tried to step out, but Brendon didn't let go of me. "Baby, we need to get out of the shower."
Brendon let out a small moan, then giggled after. "N-no, I d-don't want t-to." I smiled, handing him a towel, as I wrapped one around myself.
"C'mon, sweetie, it's okay. I'll kiss, touch, and do anything with you all night if it makes you happy." I promised him. "Plus you need to eat something, and Josh cooks really well."
Brendon giggled again, spiking my hair up. "O-okay, D-Dally, I l-love you." I smiled back at him. He was the most amazing person in the world, and I got to call him mine. Even though we had gone through some rough shit, and I knew we'd probably have more, I still had never been happier. I finally knew what real love felt like, and I never wanted it to end.
