Ch 8: A Little Exploring
My mind trails back to my family, and what my father asked me that day.
"(y/n), who would you want to marry?"
That was 13 years ago, but I still remember that dinner, it was the last dinner we've had together, as a family, and it was horrible. It was also the day that Cassandra told me she was a hunter, and changed my whole life for the better. They always say that things get worse before they can get better. Has my life finally started to peak? Is it getting better than it was?
I think about the question my father asked me that day.
"(y/n), who would you want to marry?" His question replays over and over again. What was my reply? I look back in my memories.
"Someone who is nice to me."
Who is nice to me. The butlers only take care of me, because my family is working most of the time and they don't know what else to do with their time.
There are no males that are truly nice to me.
I think back through the Hunters Exam, and what has happened so far.
Gittarackur and Hisoka faces pop up in my mind. They're nice to me. I also think about the group of boys that seem to hang out together most of the time. Killua, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio.
Hisoka and Gittarackur seem like the type of people to keep most things to themselves. The only exception is that Hisoka is more... eccentric.
"What's your name?" Hanzo asks me from across the room. Should I tell him. I make a quick glance at Hisoka and Gittarackur. They both look at me, smiling.
"Akiyama, (y/n) Akiyama," I reply, it's not like saying my name out loud would make a difference.
"Oh! Like from that rich family? The one that lives on an island for rich people?" He asks me, making me uncomfortable.
"Yeah, but, honestly, I never want to go back there." I say honestly. Hanzo wouldn't tell anyone else, he's that type of person, Hisoka and Gittarackur probably don't have anyone else to tell.
"Hmmm~" Hisoka moans. What was that for?
"Why don't you want to go back there?" Gittarackur asks.
"I'll tell you after the exam, assuming that both of us make it that far," I say.
"Ok." He turns his head to face forward, his head making strange clicking sounds.
We sit there in awkward silence as more and more people enter the room for finishing the third phase. I observe the room for a while, trying to find everyone's weakness and strengths so I could defeat them if the time ever comes.
Some people were bored, they looked around, trying to find something that can keep them occupied.
I started to get tired and tried not to doze off. How much time did we have left. I took out my backpack and pulled out a watch that I had kept just in case there was a phase like this one. We had two more days left, I might as well take a nap or relax a little bit. This is just a waiting room.
I start to doze off before my head seeps down and I fall asleep.
When I wake up I have to squint my eyes to the light in the room. I sit up and look around the room.
Taking out my watch, I look at the time. I slept for a really long time. It must be at least lunch time now, we have at least 24 hours left until the fourth phase begins.
There were 16 candidates, including myself in the room. Hisoka was stacking up cards into a pyramid shape and Gittarackur was eating quite peculiarly.
The three brothers had just come in, now there are 19 participants that have passed the third phase. They were cocky, like they thought they were going to pass the exam. They have little to no combat abilities from what I can see. If I was going up against one thousand of them, I'd still win, and with a maximum amount of five minutes to say the least.
I shouldn't get cocky either, if I have to face Hisoka, or Gittarackur, I'd have to train for maybe a year more in order to stand a chance. Right now, I have almost no experience fighting with people who have a reason to fight.
Cassandra once told me a story that I will always remember.
There was a fox chasing a rabbit in the woods. The rabbit was chased for a while before the rabbit escaped and his in his home. The fox scoffed and wondered why he couldn't catch the rabbit, who, must've been much slower than him normally. An owl said to him that while the fox was only chasing the rabbit for a meal, the rabbit was running for his life.
There will be people that will be weaker than me, but when met with a sticky situation, they'll suddenly become stronger and either defeat their opponent or escape.
I felt someone staring at me, viciously. If I wanted to stay hidden for a little while more, I'd just have to fight the urge to use En to detect them.
I looked around, trying to see who it was that was staring at me. Couldn't see anyone in particular, so I decided to ignore it for the time being.
More of the trays had been eaten, so it was easier for me to grab a tray from one of the shelves.
I ate my food and threw out the remains of my tray. Some other people were still sleeping, I must've gotten seventeen hours of sleep last night. I guess it makes up for the lack of sleep I had gotten while training. I felt energized, like I could take the fourth phase of the exam at that instant.
It was thrilling and exhilarating, the thought of passing the exam on the first try, as well as having fun. The exam has gone by so quickly, I wonder if I could get closer to Those four friends and the two strongest ones, Hisoka and Gittarackur. I can't help but get a feeling that they both have an infinite amount of secrets that they are hiding.
The remaining time in the waiting room was me, eating, drinking, sleeping, and observing everybody's skills.
Tonpa, along with the group of four boys, had entered at the last minute. Hisoka was smiling. He was smirking, but not like a dad who just saw his son ride his bike for the first time, it was...creepy.
I'm just glad that he doesn't smirk at me like that, I'd die inside.
A door opened to the outside world and we were told to pick cards from a box. We were led on a boat where there was a woman who gave us intel on where we were going. It was embarrassing how desolate the reactions from the participants were when she finished talking.
Once we got to the site of the fourth phase of the exam, we got off the boat in the order we passed the third phase. Hisoka got off the boat first.
I was let off of the boat after Hisoka and went to explore the island. The person I was supposed to hunt was one of the weaker ones, so it shouldn't be too hard to grab their badge without them noticing. I just hope the person who's hunting me isn't strong like Hisoka, that would be a nightmare.
Being out in the wild for me is perilous, I have no experience with the outdoors whatsoever.
After exploring the island a bit, finding fresh water and a place to camp for the night, I headed to the start. The person getting off at that moment was my target. I wanted to avoid killing anyone, so I was going to snatch the badge out of their bag and then make sure they don't notice it until I've arrived safely at my campsite.
The concept of the fourth phase was that everyone who passed the third phase's badge was put into a box. The badge number you pulled out was the person you had to hunt. The person who pulls out your own badge number has to hunt you down. Only the strongest will survive this round. My guess is that most of these people will die at the hands of their hunters.
Once my prey hid himself in a tree, I quickly hid my presence and walked over to him. He hadn't noticed me yet. He seemed like a coward, paranoid because of the contents of this phase. I shifted between ten and zetsu, to avoid any leaves or sticks being too noisy as I shifted by.
I created a small breeze that calmed the man down. I snatched his badge from his bag and scurried back to camp. I'd be able to pass the exam if I just kept mine and his badge. The hardest part of the phase was going to begin, trying to keep what I've taken.
