54: Memories
I check my phone to see that I have an hour till Daniel is schedule to pick me up for our date. He told me we'll be going to some fancy restaurant so I've decided to dress up.
I choose a metallic pink pleated skirt that stops just below my knees and a half sleeved pink top that I tuck into the skirt.I curl my hair and do my make up before I put on a pair of skin stilettos to complete the look. I step back to give myself a once over one final time and I'm happy with how I look.
I'm putting my phone and wallet into my purse when I hear the apartment's bell ring. I answer the door to find Daniel on the other side holding a bouquet of pink roses. We may have been dating for the last four years but at moments like these I still get shy around him.
"Hi." I say with a small smile on my face.
"Hey." He smiles back at me and then adds, "I didn't realize the flowers would match your clothes."
This makes me laugh as he hands me the flowers and I walk back into the apartment. He closes the door after him, following me in.
"Ready to go?" He asks as I fill a vase with water and carefully arrange the flowers in it.
"Yes." I reply and quickly grab my purse before following him out the door.
Daniel takes my hand as the elevator stops at the ground floor of my apartment building and leads me out the front door and towards his parked black BMW.He holds open my door for me as I get in and then walks around to his side.
"Where are we going?" I ask Daniel as he pulls away from the parking area.
"It's a surprise." He replies, taking his eyes off the road for a second to look at me.
"A surprise?" I ask, curious to know more.
A 'mhmm' is all I'm able to get out of him about the date. We talk about our jobs as the drive continues. We drive for almost an hour, driving along the coastline for a good fifteen minutes till the industrial area begins and Daniel turns onto dark road. I'm about to raise my concern about it being unsafe when I realize that there's no need to.
We're driving towards a helipad.
There are bright lights flooding the area that is property of the helipad and the sleek helicopters glisten in the bright lights.
"Helicopters?" I ask, surprised.
"I've been training as a helicopter pilot." Daniel tells me and my mouth falls open.
"You-Why-Daniel! Why didn't you tell me?!" I stutter.
He laughs at my shock as he packs the car and turns to face me, "I wanted to surprise you with a helicopter ride as a date."
I can't resist the urge any longer and I learn across the center console to kiss him. He instantly kisses me back but is also the one to end the kiss.
"Ready?" He asks, kissing my cheek.I nod my head and unbuckle as Daniel gets out and walks over to my side to open the door for me. I step out of the car and take Daniel's hand as we walk over to the helicopter that has a crew swarming around it.
"Daniel Aaron?" One of them asks, breaking away from the rest and introductions are made.
"The helicopter is ready. Your instructor has highly praised your flying abilities. We hope you enjoy your experience." The man says.
"Thank you." Daniel shakes his hand and leads me over to the cockpit.
The door to one side is open and I'm instructed to get in from that side. I'm extra careful since I'm in heels. I settle into my seat and buckle my seatbelt. A moment later Daniel gets in next to me from the other side. He hands me a set of microphone and earphones, identical to ones that he's already wearing.
"All set?" He asks me. When I nod, he takes my hand and kisses it, making my heart flutter, before turning to the machine's controls.
A few seconds later, I hear faint whirring and realize that it's coming from the helicopter's blades. Since I've never ridden a helicopter before, the sudden lift off makes me release a small yelp. A few minutes of silence stretch out between us as Daniel adjusts controls when he finally speaks, I start to breathe again.
"Ready to see New Haven as you've never experienced it?" He asks, looking at me.
Despite my heart beat accelerating from the adrenaline, I nod my head and he gives me a quick smile before turning his attention back to the controls and guides the helicopter forward, towards the city lights that glisten in the distance.
~Daniel's Perspective~
I hear a small gasp from Emma as we reach the edge of the city and begin the flight over buildings of the suburbs. I sneak a quick glance at her to find a look of awe on her face as she takes in the sight below us.
Just looking at her makes my heart feel warm and content. She looks absolutely stunning in the city lights that illuminate her beautiful face. It takes all my willpower to keep my hand on the control stick and not kiss her.
We fly over the city in comfortable silence, enjoying the city views and each other's presence. You know someone's the right person for you when even the mere presence of the other makes you feel comfortable and at ease.
"Emma?" I call out, unable to stop myself anymore.
"Hmm?" She tears away her eyes from the city below to look at me.
"I love you." I tell her as my heart continues to beat fast.
"I love you." She replies, leaning over and kissing my cheek.
My self-control is running out fast so to ensure both our safety I simply give her a smile that I hope conveys my feelings before turning my attention back to the helicopter's controls.
~Emma's Perspective~
My heart melts at Daniel's words and then completely shatters at his smile. I love him with all my heart.
By the time we return to the helipad my heart is warm and content.
Daniel hops out of the helicopter and walks over to my side to help me out. I take his hand and carefully jump onto level ground.
"I hope you enjoyed your flight." The same man appears before us as the crew swarms the helicopter again.
"We did." Daniel replies and we both thank him before walking back to the car.
Once we're driving back towards the city, I turn to Daniel, "Thank you. That was amazing."
He keeps his eyes on the road but his free hand finds mine and squeezes it, "Anything for you. But the night isn't over yet."
"What?" I ask, surprised.
"I'm not dropping you off hungry." Daniel smirks at me.
"No restaurant is going to even come close to the epicenes of the helicopter ride." I tell Daniel.
~Daniel's Perspective~
"Are you sure?" I ask Emma and smile to myself. Little does she know.
I hear her laugh softly as we drive along the coast towards our next destination. A short drive is all it takes to reach the private pier that I discovered when I took a drive by myself to think about the decision and instantly knew it would be the perfect place. As I start to slow the car and then park on the side of the road, Emma catches up.
"Fancy restaurant?" She asks, an eyebrow raised.
I unbuckle my seatbelt and open the car door, "I had something even better in mind."
~Emma's Perspective~
Daniel takes my hand and together we walk onto the pier. We stop a safe distance away from the edge and listen to the sound of water splashing. It has an eerie comfort to it.
"Emma?" Daniel says and I turn to look at him.
"I actually brought you here to tell you something." He says, looking at me.
I turn my body so that I'm facing him. "Tell me what?"
"Remember I told you last month about a client I was hoping to land?" He prods.
I nod, "Yes. The one who's promised first payment is big enough to pick up Aaron Limited's activities."
"I got the deal." He says.
It takes my brain a second to process the information and then all I can do is stare at him for a few seconds before my brain catches up.
"OH GOSH! DANIEL!" I scream, throwing my arms around his neck and clinging onto him, unable to contain my joy at the news. I feel him laugh as I pull away to look at him, a wide smile on my face.
"When did you find out?" I ask, taking a deep breath.
"About two weeks ago." He replies, ducking his head, knowing my reaction.
"YOU WAITED TWO WEEKS TO TELL ME!" I exclaim.
Now he bursts out laughing. "I would have told you sooner but there were things that I wanted to fall into place before I told you and now that they have, here we are."
"What other things?" I frown.
"The first payment is sufficient enough for us to manage our client's needs and-" He breaks off but I urge, "And?"
"And move operations to Long Beach." He completes the sentence.
My heart bursts with joy and I give him a quick kiss before meeting his gaze, "Daniel this is everything your struggle has been for this whole year. I can't believe you've finally achieved what you worked so hard for."I press a hand to his cheek to keep hold his gaze, "And you deserve every single ounce of this success. I'm so proud of you."
With this I slip my hair into his hair and pulls his mouth to mine. The kiss we share is feverish, full of the excitement at the news that Daniel just shared. He's the one to end the kiss but doesn't let me back away as he wraps an arm around my waist and tucks the other into this pants' pocket.
"There's one thing you need to answer." He says.
"What?" I ask, too happy to care about any questions he had for me.
But I was not emotionally prepared for what followed.
He pulled me closer before saying, "This last year has been financially tough for me but the last few months have been a positive reprieve and now with this deal in place and so many more already in the horizon, I am pretty confident about a safe future for me. But I can't imagine one without you."
With this he pulls away from me and gets down on one knee in front me.
"Emma Kensinger, will you do me the honor of marrying me and making me the happiest man alive by becoming my wife?"
The world around me fades away and there's nothing keeping me grounded except my hand in Daniels'. It takes me a few seconds to gather my bearings but as soon as my brain processes his words, I feel tears slide down my cheeks and my breathing hikes.
"Emma? Are you okay?" Daniel asks and all I can do is nod in reply.
"Is this yes to the 'are you okay' or..." He trails off and I finally get my emotions under control.
"Yes, I'll marry you." I manage to get out as more tears leak out.
The smile that spreads across Daniel's face makes my heart want to jump out.He takes his hand out of his pocket and he's holding a box. He opens it to reveal a breath taking diamond ring that he stands up and slides onto my ring finger before pressing his lips to mine. The kiss is soft but filled with the love that we share.
"I love you, so much." I whisper, pressing my forehead to his.
"I love you." He whispers and then adds, "I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."
With this he dips me slightly, my body completely supported by his arms as he kisses me.
"Emma, should we stop at the café we saw on our way to the helipad?" Daniel's voice brings me back to the present.
"Yes, please. I'm starving." I smile at him, my heart and mind filled with memories of the past.
"Can I get cake?" Hazel asks from the back.
"Of course you can, Bunny." I smile to myself and rest my head against my seat.
